Training a Magikarp has always been a tricky proposition in Pokemon games: With no moves, the giant fish is practically useless in battle. That tradition doesn’t just continue in Pokemon GO, it is taken to the next level.
Look at Magikarp’s evolution requirements in Pokemon GO. Just look at them:
Four hundred candies. Most monsters in Pokemon GO don’t have such ridiculous requirements — the highest candy count I’ve seen is 100, and that’s for the third evolution in a line. It’s possible that Magikarp is the hardest monster to evolve in the entirety of Pokemon GO at the moment, which is amazing.
I don’t know how long it will take me to evolve my Magikarp; they don’t spawn very often near where I live or work. But even if you’re in the middle of a Magikarp nest, actually collecting 400 Magikarp candies is still a slow grind. Contrast this to the games, where it’s pretty easy to just use an XP share item or whatever. You don’t even have to think about training Magikarp, the items do it for you.
More so than the main games, evolving a Magikarp in Pokemon GO is a real accomplishment. I commend any of you who are attempting this hilarious challenge. The Gyarados will be oh-so-worth it.
In the meantime, it’s pretty amusing to see people reacting to Magikarp in Pokemon GO:

You only need to catch 101 Magikarps, not so bad 😛
Shit, replace Magikarp with Zubat and I could have done it this afternoon…
The next issue is finding a magikarp with decent stats to evolve. Even if I had the 400 candies my best so far is only 80cp.
80cp is actually pretty decent for a Magikarp. The trick isn’t to look at the CP itself, but at how full the semi-circle around the pokemon is. The strength is displayed in CP, but it’s really a percentage of your maximum ability to train it. So if you have a 90% trained Magikarp and evolve it, it’ll be a 90% trained Garydos, which will be much more powerful
All the info floating around and few people actually mention that mechanic.
A level 21 took Fortitude Valley Train Station in Brisbane with a 1517 Gyarados, Friday Night after I read this article.
Just walk along the Yarra between Fed Square and Docklands, he is bloody everywhere. Also Fitzroy Gardens is a hot spot.
I’ll remember that when I’m in Melbourne for Pax! Cheers.
Sweet, I’m in Melbourne next week for a conference. I’ll make sure I detour a little to the Yarra. I’m not staying far away. Hell, the conference is pretty much right on the spot.
It’s a lot, but it’s not actually that many. I rode my bike for an hour yesterday and caught 12 Doduo. That’s over 10% of what’s needed to evolve magicarp. Anyone in an area where magicarp is their common Pokémon will have gyarados within 1-2 weeks.
Yeah, I evolved two Zubats in 30 mins while standing at a couple lures for 30 minutes….if those were magikarps that would have been 25% of the way.
Tauros in the picture. Don’t taunt us Australians who can’t get one 🙁
Questacon has four permanently-lured pokestops right next to each other and it’s a Magicarp volcano.
Still only half-way to evolving mine though.
