If you didn’t know already, there’s a Monster Hunter movie in the works. And if that didn’t pique your curiosity enough, then here’s the director drawing comparisons between Monster Hunter and Star Wars.
“You’re fighting these giant creatures, some as big as a city block,” Paul W.S. Anderson, director of the Resident Evil movie series, explained to Deadline in an interview about the zombie game-to-movie franchise and why Monster Hunter is getting the same treatment.
And according to Anderson, it’s because Monster Hunter has a lot of parallels with Star Wars. “There are no real central characters so it’s a bit like when we first approached Resident Evil and imposed our own characters and story on that world,” the director explained. “I think this is a perfect IP for us to do exactly that same thing again.”
Capcom lifted the lid on the Monster Hunter live action movie at the Tokyo Game Show this year. Monster Hunter has gotten the blockbuster treatment in theme parks too: exhibitions have been showcased at Universal Studios Japan, and Anderson has a pretty good pitch for those who might be concerned.
The central characters are very relatable American characters. You take a person from the ordinary world who thinks they’re in a dead end job, they have no future, they feel like their life’s a failure, it’s going nowhere, like Keanu Reeves in The Matrix. It’s about a normal American who gets dragged into this parallel world, this Monster Hunter world. Then eventually the parallel world ends up coming to our world. So you have the creatures from the Monster Hunter world invading our world.
That’ll work. If you want to read more about how Anderson plans to turn Monster Hunter into a hit as big as the Resident Evil series was, head over to Deadline. It’s a good read.

That pitch sounds horrible.
Anderson is simultaneously the worst and best person for an MH movie. It will hopefully be an enjoyable popcorn movie with good action sequences but any sort of reverence to the source material will be thrown out the window. It’ll be a stupid movie and a waste of the MH IP but I hope it will be a fun experience.
The trope of ripping an Everyman into fantasy and making them the hero of ages is the only way Americans will fund what would otherwise be a high fantasy concept.
It’s tired as hell, and so whitewashy it would put Huck Finn out of work, but it sells them tickets, and capcom wants money.
Come on. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t watch that just for the hilarity of the premise.
Um.
Damn.
They’re on to me!
What a great sensation – another Super Mario Brothers quality movie is coming!
Despite having a soft spot for the Mario movie, I can’t believe that they’re using essentially the same plot here.
Also the old dungeons and dragons cartoon.
😐
But does Monster Hunter star Milla Jovovich as a literal Mary Sue character?
Sounds terrible. Day one.
Yeah right. It’ll be trash.
As long as there is some excessive waving and prancing.
So it’ll be similar to the Resident Evil movies, and that means that it has parallels with Star Wars? Riiiiight… >_>
I expect that he means the originals or the new film, but based on what he’s said It sounds like it’ll probably be lucky to meet the low standard set by the forgettable prequels.
