They have been called many things over the years. Isometric RPGs, hack'n'slash RPGs, ARPGs, Diablo clones. But one thing is certain: They wouldn't exist if Diablo didn't come out in 1996. Diablo and its sequels spawned a whole catalogue of isometric action RPGs.
The offering of genres is pretty scattershot, but if you're the eclectic type of gamer then you'll be quite pleased with the latest Humble Bundle.
As an isometric fantasy action role-playing game, Victor Vran does a lot of the same things Diablo does. It also does several things Diablo doesn't, which is what makes it awesome.
Despite past experience, some games do indeed come out of Early Access, with one of the latest off the rank being Victor Vran by Tropico developer Haemimont Games. While it may have missed its planned May release by a few months, the extra polish looks to have paid off for the co-op action RPG.
Haemimont Games is best known for its management sims, with Tropico and its four sequels well-regarded by genre fans. Sadly, the last time it strayed elsewhere the result was a mafia-themed title called Omerta... and it didn't do quite so well. This hasn't stopped Haemimont from cooking up Victor Vran, a fantasy action RPG that is distinctly less banana republic (and gangster) flavoured than its previous efforts.
