DayZ's Creator Has Only Killed Another Player Once

Zombie survival mod DayZ is rife with player-killing, and even though it's an integral part of the game's experience, most people nevertheless tend to frown on it, seeing as survival is the name of the game, not murder.

But once in a while, you run into a problem that can only be solved by violence. Or, in the case of DayZ creator Dean Hall, that problem finds you.

Recounting to Dork Shelf a tale of one day's play in the game, he reveals that only once has he ever killed another player in the game.

At the airfield, Hall spotted another new player cluelessly running around in the open. The troupe tried calling out to him, but, seeing the size of the group, the stranger tried to run away. "I started firing some warning shots," said Hall. "and I just kept firing. I don't know what compelled me. The next minute, I see him fall over."

The interface alerted Hall that the player had died. One of the players in the group said, "Wow, you killed him."

"I struggled, trying to understand why," said Hall. "I did it out of morbid curiosity. I wouldn't say I was revolted — at the end of the day it's still a game, but it didn't make sense to me."

It's OK. Last I checked, the zombies ate all the cops and the judges. You're cool, Dean!

Ive killed a lot of people at this point. Both fairly and unfairly but never unarmed people. I understand this sentiment. Its odd how dayz has managed to instill regret into its actions...

MURDERER! If he hid the guys body that's even worse

For some reason it is extremely statisfying to kill people, maybe not noobs as the are no challenge.

If I get ganked, I usually get revenge by baiting a bunch of zeds and ruining them to the location of my attackers lol

Three reasons here, in these comments, for me to avoid this game.

If I wanted PvP, I'd go and play TF2 or CoD.. I was hoping this game would attract a crowd who wanted to play out the Zombie fantasy as seen in tv shows like The Walking Dead.. to band together and try to create a world worth living in.

Instead, it's just another toy box for people to cause havok. Boring.

I haven't watched the walking dead but I was in the understanding that part of the zombie survival fantasy was the exploration of psychologically stressing circumstances, including the terrifying desperation that would lead to people killing each other. In that way I've always considered the way players could ruin this game to be working as intended.

In zombie films, the real monsters are humans.

      Ahem.

I found that when I was starting out and zombies/survival was my greatest threat (I thought) I would happily band together with other plays and not even consider killing a player.

Once surviving, finding loot and zombies became trivial, the game became boring for me unless I tried to hunt down players. There just isn't enough variety in the game to keep people playing together rather than against each other.

It IS like the walking dead - their group encounters other groups on a regular basis and almost every time they're not friendly. The Walking Dead highlights the fact that in that level of zombie apocalypse, humans can pose as much of a threat - if not more - than the zombies.

Why was he firing warning shots? The guy they were trying to 'help' seemed to think that getting near a big group of people was a bad idea, so he shoots him?

inb4 the players that will try to argue that since everyone else in DayZ shoots on sight, your only option is to do the same... Worse kind of circular reasoning right there, and it's not even true... I get killed by other players often, but at the same time I've had plenty of great adventures with other friendlies...
