Today Activision confirmed that, as Kotaku reported last month, Destiny 2 won’t be out until 2017. But there will be a significant expansion later this year.
Said the company in a press release this afternoon: “Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017.”
There’s no word yet what this “large new expansion” will actually be. As we reported in January, Bungie made the decision earlier this year to delay Destiny‘s sequel, and plans for the future of the game’s content are changing frequently.
Bungie briefly expanded on Activision’s statement in today’s weekly blog post, explaining that there will also be a spring update that will raise the current level cap:
Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability.
Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017.

Wait and see I guess. Now that I’ve broken my Destiny habit I’m pretty indifferent to their release schedule. I’ll get to it whenever.
Probably going to hold off on Taken King now because they’re bound to bundle it with the new expac.
That’s nice. Good for them.
Hm. Didn’t they indicate they weren’t doing that format of release, earlier? Shifting to just releasing more frequent, smaller updates that weren’t big expansions?
PR release 1 was made to justify the addition of micro-transactions.
PR release 2 is for once people forget PR release 1 and are craving any meaningful content in the game.
So a whole weeks worth of content this time? And wait for it…. a new emblem.
^^^^^^ this guy
… All for the low, low price of $89.95!

Exactly! I’m not even gonna bother buying anymore DLC’s. Why does it have to be so expensive?!
I thought Destiny was an MMO type thing, why are they working on a sequel already?
Unless I’ve misunderstood…never played the game and haven’t looked into it much.
It follows an MMO format to an extent (though you’d argue that the “massively” part is missing) but given the kind of game it is they can’t really afford to keep using the same base game and just add on content. It’ll look dated too quickly compared to something like WoW where people didn’t really give a shit how it looked for ten years. The “sequel” will likely be a continuation in the form of a whole new story arc but also a reboot of the world, an overhaul of the engine, and an opportunity for new players to enter without feeling like they have to catch up.
Fair enough. Sounds like some poor design choices that have killed its longevity.
Knowing that the sequel is due in 2017 why would people bother joining up now or playing the next expansion. Games with periodic and multiple expansions already put me off to begin with, giving me a reason to skip them isn’t a good idea.
Well, that’s why they’ve announced a “major” expansion coming this year, to bridge that gap. I personally jumped ship last year when Fallout 4 launched because I’d finished the story content, had no interest in the raid/challenge modes, and they’d said there were no more story expansions coming. I said I’d come back for Destiny 2, maybe, and I hold to that – unless they do actually bring out so more story content I can get interested in before then.
It’s an mmo in the way that 16 people can be in your instance of the hub location. But the game itself only allows teams of 3 or 6 depending on the mission or raid you’re doing and it’s a very linear story type of game and once you’ve completed that there isn’t a whole lot of replayability
Ok…so it’s more just an online multiplayer co-op based shooter with some pvp thrown in?
unfortunately yeeep. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun shooter to go through with friends and the pvp is solid but it’s till just eh. you can skip it.
“Significant light level increase” = Taken King content irrelevant.
Also given their track record they’ll probably try to get a raid together but they aren’t 100% sure it’ll be ready on time, surely if they could guarantee a raid they’d mention it since its the only true end game PvE.
Well yeah, that’s the backbone of how the game works. The Taken King has had it’s time, people have played the content, won the rewards and had fun with it and now they’re done with it it’s time to move forward to the next lot of content.
This sort of game doesn’t work if you just stack all the content on top over and over again. Imagine going into Taken King with your Vault of Glass gear still being the best in the game. You’d face roll it in an afternoon and have no reason to keep playing. In a progression based game players need soft resets with each new lot of content. Tiers adjust, bars are raised and focus is kept on current content.
There’s plenty of ways that you can tweak old content in order to make it relevant again, particularly with the raids. Extra hard versions of the raids, random weekly modifiers, hell they could put in some effort and make Taken versions of the bosses and add a bit of new story to go along with it. “Oh no, the Taken have invaded the Vault of Glass and turned Atheon!”, “Oh no, the Taken have revived Crota as Taken now!”. Chuck in some of the old weapons drops at year 2 levels with a Taken colour scheme and your work is done.
But nah, more emote microtransactions!
You can totally force it to stay relevant, but you shouldn’t. That scenario you described is anti-content. It’s the phoned in filler content that makes it really hard for players to ignore that they’re just going through upgrade gear to beat boss->beat boss to upgrade gear cycle. It’s the stuff that floods end-game so the new exciting raid doesn’t look as good. It also still makes the old content irrelevant. The original Vault of Glass won’t be relevant, there will just be a new raid in the expansion that looks the same.
With this sort of progression system you need to keep players focused on the horizon.
The bigger point is that content aging isn’t a bad thing. New things come in to replace the old. It’s a living game you’re meant to grow with and progress through. With how badly Destiny over uses it’s content I’m amazed anyone who cares about content being relevant even wants to keep replaying old content. Vault of Glass on a whim is fun but do you really want to have to keep getting groups together to run it? Especially when there’s fun new content you could be running instead.
You have some solid points, but the defining factor is that Destiny does just not have enough new content to keep people interested. After most people went through the new Taken King content in a few weeks, there was nothing until they put out the hard version of the new raid. And after that, it’s been next to nothing since, except the push to get to light 220 by playing the 1 piece of content over and over.
If Destiny was swimming in content, people wouldn’t be so discontent with it. But as it stands, modifying existing content to make it relevant again would be welcomed over the occasional microtransaction event and lack of things to do. If people had the choice of ways to get to 220, instead of playing the same raid over and over and hoping RNG isn’t an asshole again this week (RNG is a shitty way to attempt to prolong content, but that’s another discussion for another time), you’d see a lot less complaining, and I’m sure quite a few more people coming back to it.
Bungie has stated that there will be a light level increase soon, and then some new content in future. But I’d put good money on most of the Taken King content being made redundant when this happens, which just moves the goalposts again. And then it’ll be the same story, with a couple of weeks before people get bored, and then back to waiting for more ever so exciting microtransaction events.
You’re talking common sense, bungie doesn’t have any of that. Be great if they made ALL the content in the game relevant.
Tweak the old raids difficultly, add a few new weapon and armour sets that are unique to them raids. Make ALL the strikes play in the rotation instead like the same 6 or 7 over and over…hell add some unique random weapon/armour drops in the harder difficulty strikes.
So many easy ways to provide variety to content already in the game. I haven’t played in a good 4 months and i can’t say i miss it. Was good fun, gets old fast. Bungie are so out of touch with how to make this game work and what their fan base want lol Atleast they adding some new PVE content
Just think of all the new emotes you can buy and still only be able to equip 2 at a time…….. I never thought disdain would describe how I felt about this game but here we are.
It will cost $90 and be packaged with the core game and expansions you have already bought…twice…
How many times can they get you to pay for the shitty DLC that they tacked onto vanilla destiny season pass?
Agreed. Bungie over promised and under delivered.
Enh. I get the general sentiment, but it’s important to consider this in the context of MMO models.
Look at Warcraft, for example. This year, that game will be up to six major expansions.
The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor, and later this year, Legion.
Once an expansion has been out for a while, it’s considered part of the ‘base game’, and buying WoW as a first-timer just getting into the game usually folds in all the previous expansions. It’d be ludicrous to charge a new-comer to the franchise the base box price plus a full priced expansion for five other expansions. It’d make the thing impenetrable.
But that doesn’t entitle players who paid full price for each expansion at the time to get the new one for free because someone else is only paying $50 for what they’ve paid $300 for over the last ten years.
One of the things that you pay for is timing. Things go down in price over time. Depreciation is natural, normal, and nothing to complain about. If you don’t want to continually pay current-day release prices for new content at the time the content is released, then go ahead and wait for it to be included in a bundle when it’s outdated.
You wouldn’t complain to a car dealer that the 2016 model car you bought is suddenly available for thousands of dollars less to people who buy the 2016 model in 2017. The same is true of expansions.
Timing matters. It affects price. That’s never going to change.
Yes but when they released the 2017 model they took out my 2016’s two back seats and the keys to my boot.
Fair point. Although really, it’s a lot more like your 1yr roadside assist/toll road membership expired.
I can see it that way too except multiplayer game modes were always in the game from day 1 (i think) and never advertised as bonus or subscription content.
And strike missions can still be like roadside assist except they simply reduced the “assistance” days to something like every 3rd wednesday of the month.
Then you have raids which the community itself turned into an exclusive club which is weird, fascinating, and unfortunate (for me) as well.
To be fair, they did offer a purely Taken King purchase option. Given how useless/underwhelming the Taken King CE extras were, I think a lot more players will opt for the pure expansion this time around.
As a gamer there are only disadvantages involved with being an early adopter. You pay the max price for the least amount of content in its worst possible state (bugs). I’m usually someone who waits for price drops and bug fixes before i purchase a game. With destiny I was pretty hyped up to buy it so bought it on release. Such a massive slap in the face that’s made me realise how much of an idiot i was to be become an early adopter. Then it feels like they keep slapping you in the face with the expansions. Lesson learned.

Cool, new PvE stuff at last. Kinda wondering about after that, tho – year one set a pace for PvE content releases, and year two looks to be adding its first minor content pack about 6 months in… if the sequel’s not until September 2017, they’re going to have a lot of trouble keeping players interested.
As long as my character gets carried across to Destiny 2, I’ll be happy.
I really don’t care anymore to be honest, I’ve broken the habit and there really isn’t much that will make me jump back on that wagon. Certainly not interested enough to pay for it, if its free I’d probably jump back on for a go, but they have enough of my money already
Im the same, haven’t played in at least 3 months, for many reasons. I had a bitch further up ^ lol
In brief, the pvp is a unbalanced laggy mess, so i stopped that. Along with bungie just not communicating with the fans properly, make dumb ass decisions, stupid micro transactions, making 2/3 of the games content useless, etc.
Just an endless list of bungie shooting themselves in the foot and being completely out of touch with their fan base
(crotchety old man voice activate)
My my my, has it been 10 years already? I remember back in the day when I first heard about destiny, there was talk about how a decade from now we would all still be playing due to a fantastic content release schedule.
The only people that thought they would be still playing Destiny 1 in 10 years were the people not paying attention to Destiny news (admittedly a lot of people). There was plenty of details leaked and confirmed about the way they wanted to do it.
Year 1: Destiny + dlc + dlc
Year 2: Destiny 1.5 (expansion) + dlc + dlc
Year 3: Destiny 2 (not necessarily named Destiny 2) + dlc + dlc
Year 4: Destiny 2.5 (expansion) + dlc + dlc
Year 5: Destiny 3 (not necessarily named Destiny 3) + dlc + dlc
And so on to year 10. It seems to have slipped a bit though. Tbh it’s an ambitious plan, I’d assumed it would slip.
still no PC version? 🙁 crossplay would be awesome. Rocket League did it why can’t you
Because they can’t even really deliver content for the current versions that are out?
