Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 is slated to the fourth and last entry in the Rebuild of Evangelion series. It has been held up, however, by the new Godzilla film. Hideaki Anno is sorry about that.

Anno, who created Evangelion, is helming the new Japanese Godzilla film, and thus he had to temporarily put Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 on ice.
“To all the Evangelion fans, I’m really, really keeping you all waiting,” Anno recently said (via Oricon). “I am truly sorry.”
Continuing, Anno was quoted as saying, “Evangelion can only be described as my soul. It’s a work that chips off parts of me.” It got to the point where nothing was left, and Anno felt trapped while making Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. He didn’t have a chance to recharge.
“Up until then, after doing the third entry Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, I thought I wasn’t going to make any more,” Anno said. He then got the offer to do Godzilla Resurgence. “At that time, I went into talks with Toho, and it saved me. I think this is how I’m able to keep making Evangelion. However, since it is a fact that I’m making everyone wait, I deeply apologise for that.”

This rebuild has been so drawn out and protracted, more than the awkward, drawn out and protracted moments of nothing from the original series. I bought and watched 1.11 and 2.22 but from many accounts 3.33 is a confusing mess and I’m not sure I’ve got the patience to wait for yet another installment. Or the tolerance for these numbering sequences.
Maybe I’m just older and grumpier and can’t be bothered putting up with Shinji’s emo-teen self-pity XD gods, I’d rather another Impact.
1.11 and 2.22 are great, well executed and easy to follow. Then you get to 3.33 and it turns batshit crazy. I saw a screening of it in a cinema and when the end credits rolled there was just awkward silence from the audience. You could tell that nobody had a clue what was going on. I discussed it with my friends afterwards and none of them could figure out what the hell was supposed to be happening either.
While some cool sequences got dropped from the originals, I did enjoy the first two both for its re-jig of characters and new animations. But the delays in-between were ridiculous.
If I’d gone to cinema and reached the confused I’d have been pretty damn upset.
I loved the first two movies but was also confused as hell after watching the third one.
When I went back and re-watched 3.33 it made a lot more sense. I’m not sure if that was due to changes from the original (3.03) cinema release or just that my first watching mad inured me to the weirdness of it all.
Unfortunately while it did make more sense on second watching I think the fundamental story under 3.33 was sort of lacking. What was confusing on watching it the first time round was actually a little bit boring on the second viewing.
On the other hand, I also liked End of Evangelion, although Death and Rebirth was very disappointing (it’s mostly just a highlights reel from the series.)
Good one, @freezespreston
I’m going back to writing 70s hits.
3 was terrible. All the cool shit from the end of 2 that was suppose to be a preview of 3 had absolutely nothing to do with 3.
See you in 2019!
The way I see it, the Rebuilds were his third attempt to actually get Evangelion right. After the low budget original ending and the mediocre End of Evangelion, it would have been ridiculous to bail without finishing the last one. At this point I still think the original vision (including the budget ending) was the best realisation of the story.. I’ve really enjoyed the Rebuilds though, so here’s 3.0+1.0 (stupidest title ever) is the ending the series finally deserves.
Just bring it already!!! Man im dying too see the conclusion. 1.11 and 2.22 were amazing, and 3.33 just left so many questions while finally deviating from the original path..
Seriously. Its going to be epic.
I picked up 1.01 in a discount shop eight years ago. when i was ten. I have been a committed fan of this franchise ever since but the gaps between movies and the shitty quality of 3.03 makes me really feel f***ed over. I guess this is how fans of the original felt when the final movie came out!…
Go back and rewatch 3 is all I can say. I hated 3 the first time I watched it, but after the second and third viewing you can appreciate the direction and the story more. It ia juat as good as the previous two, but in its own way.
Damn you Anno!
please just make sure its done before I die of old age, i dont want this movie on my bucket list
When i watched the original series finale on SBS all those years ago. I was left confused and depressed by the ending.
Repeat with the Rebirth/End movies.
So im not surprised this is going in the same direction.
