After early footage of Mass Effect Andromeda went out into the wild, everyone latched onto Foster Addison, a character who snapped at the player because she felt tired. Addison became a running joke thanks to her blank stare and lack of emoting, which, paired with her dialogue, was pretty ironic. Thanks to the newest Mass Effect patch, she’s changed for the better.
As we reported earlier in the week, BioWare promised “Improved lip-sync and facial acting during conversations, including localised [voice acting]” as well as improvements to the “general appearance” of characters, with humans in particular slated to get better eyes. As the patch dropped yesterday, I booted the game up to take a closer look, and sure enough, it’s noticeable even on Andromeda‘s most infamous character. As you can see below, Addison’s eyes now look slightly more human, and even her make-up shaders have improved.
I’d say she’s gone from a full-on O___O to a slightly more subtle o__o. It makes a difference! She looks a bit more like a real person now. The animation still isn’t fully there, but still. This is just the first step — BioWare has promised more tweaks for down the road.
Addison is not the only character affected by these new changes, of course — you’ll note them throughout the game whenever you talk to folks:

A pretty solid improvement. I guess Addison’s decided to stop taking morphine so her pupils have returned to normal size.
that looks like a good improvement, but i found Addison stands out most during her Eos scene
guess I’ll replay that and see how things have changed
Neat. She’s stopped using Homer’s makeup shotgun as well.
Dunno about real, but she at least doesnt look like someone just stuck a broomhandle up her rear…
OH MY GOD THE NEW PATCH FIXES MY GAME.
I no longer crash on entering the Nexus. I’m freeeeeee! FREEEEEEEE!
Oh yeah, all the other stuff is nice, too.
You have no idea how happy I am that you, too, can now enjoy it properly 🙂
Has the patch gone live for PS4 users in Australia?
I checked in last night, but no patch. Hopefully today or tonight?
I can’t specifically vouch for PS4 but it wasn’t avaliable for PC last night, I checked again this morning and it was loading
It’s already in effect on the PS4.
I didn’t actually see a download pop up, so it must’ve been in-client or something, similar to the way Destiny updates sometimes came through.
If you log on to your PS4 and open the game, after you ‘press x to start’ on the main menu, check the lower left corner for the version number. 1.05 is the latest update.
Thank you! I’ll write that down and have a look when I get home today. 🙂
I had to download the patch, but it’s all good, totally worth it. 🙂
Yeah, it showed up at midnight last night for PS4, its a 2gig download
You would think that they would sort this kind of shit out before they launched the game?
The most important part of game development is the marketing. Everything else is secondary.
Yeah that unfortunately is the truth nowadays. Kinda sad really.
why do all the female characters still look like theyre going through a gender transition though? they look kind of proportionately odd, i cant really put my finger on it. im gonna have to give this game a long while before i jump in i think.
Still ugly.
Oh thank god. The eyeball material change is the most important thing here, but I can’t be the only one who couldn’t have a dialogue with a female character (especially Addison) without being reminded of Homer Simpson’s makeup gun.
And I knew fixing the eyeball materials and eye shadow would make a huge difference for a simple change but I’m still surprised how much it stops them looking like deer-in-the-headlights without actually changing eyelid height.
Exactly this. When I first saw her I thought ugh, why’s her make-up setting on “whore”…
I actually just thought it was really bad makeup on their faces
Can someone with the patch go hang out on Veold and tell me if SAM ever shuts the hell up about how cold it is? I’m not going back there until that’s patched.
I’d say she looks more tired now.. Less odd, more tired.
Good improvements.
Still hate her and would love to throw her out an air lock into deep space.
