Tell Us Dammit

Dammit, we want you to tell us stuff! Stuff like what you've sacrificed for gaming.

This isn’t some marketing survey or whatever. It’s an emotional investment in you. Yes, we’re interested in knowing you, Kotaku reader person. You probably know enough about us — more than you even want to, we’re sure. But, hey, we’d like to know about you, too.

Anyway, here’s today’s question...

What have you given up, sacrificed or turn down the opportunity to do in order to play a game?

Sex, food and booze... many occasions...

oh and work/school once or twice

When I was BIG into WoW, I used to turn down offers from friends to hang out, see movies and other stuff, especially if it was raid night! I think the worst one was when I skipped one of my girlfriend's best friend's birthday parties to raid Karazahn. She was not impressed.

These days it's not so bad, although I sometimes turn down movie offers in favour of my TF2 clan's scrims.

Not much, really. My gaming works around my life, not the other way around. I chucked a sickie to grab MW2 on release last year, that's about it.

I suppose occassionally I'll pass up on a piss-up at a mate's and stay home and game, but that's more not feeling like having a 10 hour drink session.

Sleep. And homework. But not very often. I've increasingly begun to plan my days more often so I figure out when to do stuff.

      Yeah, this.
As a uni student it's not so bad, since you know, 'homework' is pretty much optional and you can just sleep in lectures (the true purpose of uni classes, right), so it all works out anyway.

Not much. As much as I love being whisked away into Fictonia it's not something I'll really want to let rule my life or interrupt from important stuff, ie real people. Though I do have a habit of really getting into a game and binging on it hard and being shut in my room for hours on end, usually followed by feelings of guilt and remorse afterwards when I realise I've forgotten to phone my girlfriend or somesuch.

Sex, but nowadays I put out because afterward I go back to my game and the missus sleeps, leaving me to play in peace :D.

Sex has become an investment for my gaming time :D

I'd say booze, but I gave up drinking when I realized that for a fraction of the cost I can buy a game that, instead of costing me 12 - 24 hours of lost memory, I get (sometimes) 100+ hours of retained memory :D

      Niceness...

        Yeah I'm a real charmer ^_^

I gave up having fun at my sister's 21st to play Mortal Kombat and Andre Agassi tennis in the kitchen of the hall (I took my tv and megadrive with me). I also wagged school once just so I could play Sega Bass Fishing... It was a bit shit. I also gave up all my money earned for work experience to play Street Fighter 2 in the lunch breaks. I forfeit a tennis tournament I was meant to be in to ride a bike 30kms to be the first in town to play Mortal Kombat 2. Good times.

Can't really think of anything of significance, mainly it was a movie or going out with friends, though generally most of those times I was probably in a lazy state and didn't feel like going out, as in even if I wasn't a gamer I wouldn't have gone out.

When Fallout 3 came out, I spent 3 days,non-stop, without sleep playing it. My flatmate was not impressed. Only 'cause she could'nt watch tv.

She should have been happy, fallout 3 is better than tv

Sleep, money, social contact... you know, the usual.

I don't actually have a life of my own, I can only get vicarious fulfillment by making computer generated people have a life instead

My school cert. I actually got it, but just barely. Planescape: Torment and studying do not mix.

    Sleep and study.

Id say not much apart from sleep. Most of my gaming is done after my son is in bed and wifey is watching some revovation show (all of them!).

Still work full time, commute to the city 3 hours return each day and am doing an MBA.

I guess you just fit it in where you can.

Funny a lot of you mention sex as something you sacrafice for gaming. That implies sex is on offer. You are not married are you?

Gaming is what you do instead of sex now... Ever wonder how I got so good at Trials HD?

I am married, but still young :P

Amen to the renovation shows! Buys me those extra few rounds of QL.

Any chance of a social life or ever getting laid.

Blood, no matter how careful I am, I always seem to nick myself at least once when building a new computer. If there's one sharp edge I'll find it.
