Ubisoft Acquires Creator Of Trials HD – Will The Series Come To PSN?

Ubisoft has announced that it has acquired RedLynx, the creator of Xbox LIVE hit Trials HD. According to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft were attracted to the strength of the RedLynx brand.

“The team at RedLynx has developed exceptionally strong digital brands that stand out for their high replay value, their long tail sales and their multiplatform positioning,” claimed Guillemot. “We are delighted to welcome RedLynx to the Ubisoft family. Their expertise in asynchronous online games and physics-based game mechanics provides us with a great opportunity to bring their powerful brands, most notably Trials, to an even broader range of fast-growing digital platforms.”

Could this mean that the Trials series will expand to the PlayStation Network? It’s certainly a very strong hint that Ubisoft will publish future Trials titles on multiple platforms.

The CEO of RedLynx, Tero Virtala, believes that Ubisoft’s goals match with the ultimate aims of RedLynx as a company.

“We were attracted by Ubisoft’s focus on creativity and quality, and the fact that they base their long-term strategy on both the traditional and digital distribution video game markets,” said Virtala. “The reality of today’s market is not about platforms, it’s about creating excellent gaming experiences that consumers can play on any device or screen they like. As part of the Ubisoft team, RedLynx will be able to focus even more intently on creating stand-out, excellent brands that push the boundaries of online gaming in many new growth areas. With Ubisoft, a wider audience will get the chance to enjoy our games, we‘ll generate more value for our brands, and also leverage our experience more broadly in digital distribution channels.”

Trials HD on PSN? It definitely seems likely. Watch this space.

  • My first thoughts… Trials port to PSN certainly seems like the most obvious move. Not sure if they go with HD or their upcoming Evolution for this?

I have often wondered about this, but with the nature of Trials asynchronous competition, I think it could be possible to have a dedicated cross platform leaderboard… that would be the only true way to have a unified Trials competition.

    Here’s hoping.

Redlynx seem like a solid investment so this is a good move, just hope that Ubi stay out of their way and just help them fund the projects and reach a larger audience.

    • Really? I’d prefer fresh leaderboards for the PSN so first time players aren’t daunted by coming so late to tracks with insane scores to beat. Let them achieve their own high scores. Or have a way (maybe online) to view a merged leaderboard.

      • I was thinking the only way to merge them would be on a PC/web anyway as neither console would support this feature.

And I was thinking longer term that they could merge these leaderboards. I just think it would be frustrating, because the competition is so good, to have this competition split over both systems. And I assure you that if it were the case, guys would play on both consoles anyway so you’d be competing against many of them anyway…

How bout this, when a NEW game is released, they do this… I agree with you that you dont want to be competing against 2 years woth of leaderboards if they port Trials HD back to PS3… fair point.

  • Here is some official info from the Redlynx forums written by a couple of their developers on this:

Hey guys! We’re very excited about the support we’ll get from Ubisoft for all our games and projects, going forward.

To answer a few questions, RedLynx will remain RedLynx, right here in Helsinki. Our website and forums will be right here, we value the Trials and RedLynx games community obviously and don’t want to change.

Trials Evolution will be coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade, just as originally planned. This should not affect its release date, which we have not yet announced in any case. It will not suddenly become a retail game or anything like that.

We’ll continue to support our other current games with new updates for DrawRace 2 and of course the one thousand days of content for 1000 Heroz.

As for an Ezio costume in Trials, yeah that’d be cool! But we haven’t officially had the discussion yet, and we don’t currently have a cape model in place.

    then they go further to say;

RedLynx stays RedLynx. We are still the same Finnish company with the same 50+ people creating the games we love. Stay assured, that Trials games are very important for us in the future as well. And quality has always been the first priority for us.

We have always been a cross platform developer. We have released games for Apple Mac, iOS, Nokia N-Gage, Sony PSP, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360. So far Trials series has four cross platform titles (Trials, Trials Pro, Trials Construction Yard, Trials Mountain Heights), two PC titles (Trials 2, Trials 2 Second Edition) and two Xbox 360 titles (Trials HD and Trials Evolution). I am looking forward to working with Ubisoft in the future. If they can help us bring our games to wider audiences, that would be a great thing.

  • Out. Standing.

I’d love to play this, even if only to more greatly appreciate the awesome articles about the secrets.

  • Can’t see any existing Trails games to PSN seeing as Microsoft were the publishers, future games though are a very high chance.

  • Trials reminds me of a game I used to sink a lot of time into during college. If memory serves it was called “Elastomania”… I’ll have to google it and see if that’s a real thing 😛

Either way, I’d love to see more Trials games on more platforms. Just so long as it stays with the same team and they’re allowed to go about their business as they feel appropriate.

  • please make trials hd for playstation 3 i played it for xbox yesterday and it is the best game ever well better than cod anyday of the week lol
