Assassin's Creed III Special Editions Revealed

In case you haven't noticed, today is Assassin's Creed III day. The embargo on all first looks has been liften, and Kotaku is flooded! Also -- Ubisoft has revealed the game's Australian collector's edition. Normally I could care less about CEs, but this looks a bit of alright, and it comes packaged with one of those cool art books I like!

In Australia, two editions are available -- The Freedom Edition (RRP $129.95) and The Join or Die Edition (RRP $109.95).

The Freedom Edition contains...

-- Assassin’s Creed III retail game -- A 24-cm high-quality figurine of Connor -- A steel book case art drawn by awards-winning comic artist Alex Ross -- George Washington's notebook revealing all the truth & secrets about the Assassins and the Templars during the American Revolution -- One exclusive Lithograph -- Two in-game Single Player Missions: -- Lost Mayan Ruins: Connor’s mission leads him in an old Mayan pyramid, full of mysteries and revelations. Players will be able to unlock Captain Kidd's fabled cutlass, a deadly, brutal and beautiful piece of steel. -- Ghost of War: The tide of the Revolution turns into the Templars favour. Defeat your enemies and unlock The Pontiac’s War Club, a powerful Native American weapon. -- 1 in-game Multiplayer Package: -- The Sharpshooter package: Unleash the Sharpshooter fury in multiplayer with 1 new character, the Sharpshooter, 1 Relic, 1 Emblem, 1 special Picture and the Title of "The Jester".

The Join or Die Edition has...

-- Assassin’s Creed III retail game -- The medallion of the Assassins with its high-quality curd ladle -- George Washington's notebook revealing all the truth & secrets about the Assassins and the Templars during the American Revolution -- 1 in-game Single Player Mission: -- Ghost of War: The tide of the Revolution turns into the Templars favour.

There is also a special edition which just contains the game itself and an exclusive single player mission titled A Dangerous Secret. See -- even the normal copy of the game is 'special'.

It all sounds well and good, but I do get shivers (bad ones) when I hear about extra single player content being given as part of a special edition, or as a pre-order bonus, but that might just be me. Still, a cool art book! Yay!

I might just spring for a CE on this one. I hope the game is as tight as AC2 was. I had some fun with Bro/Rev, but AC2 is still clearly a much tighter experience. New creative director on this project, but its still a flagship team. Will be interesting!

anybody know if jb or eb are doing the ce editions ?

The extra SP content that came with the LE of Assassin's Creed II was pretty inconsequential. I imagine it will be a similar here; so fear not, Serrels!

Wow. I was expecting exorbitant prices but the price of the Freedom edition doesn't seem so bad. I was expecting $150 + but now that figurine is extra tempting.

Also, I agree with you completely Mark. I hate it when single player portions of the game are offered up as pre-orders or part of the collector's edition. As far as I know there are three different missions split over three different packages :-(
I hope they package up those missions as DLC after the game ships.

I'd like the statue more if it didn't have the big flag behind it... i'm just one of those people that don't like any of that patriotic "americana" - it just feels tacky to me.

As cool as this game looks i'll probably be giving it a miss for now, seing as i am still yet to play #2, along with it's expansion packs :P

haha the Join or Die title is legit

I shall be pre-ordering the Freedom edition today I guess.

Buy this with all the pointless extra crap... or... pick it up for $57 on OzGameshop.... Hmmmm

      I'm with you, Mike.

Hi Mark, any idea if these editions will be store-exclusives? or will they be available to all game stores? ...hopefully not store-exclusives.

Don't think they are store exclusive. But I would expect each store to get their idiotic 'store exclusive outfits' and bullshit like that!

hahaha yeah I don't doubt that for a second! Hopefully Gametraders this time around get these. Thanks for the reply mate! :)

EB are advertising the Freedom edition as being exclusive to them http://www.ebgames.com.au/

Also Mark do you have any idea of a VITA version of the game?

          Those fucking pricks! Greedy assholes!

Forget it! My preorder is staying at Gametraders and I'm getting the 'Join Or Die' edition.... EB Games are not getting anymore of my money and they haven't since ACB!

          God Frakking Damn It... :(

I agree. I've had my fill of throwing money at EB games for lack of alternatives with collector's editions. :-(

Would much rather take my business to JB HiFi.

JB Hifi have definitely been getting their fair share of different editions of games lately which is great to see! Plus I'd rather shop and give my well earned money to an Aussie retailer like Gametraders or JB Hifi!

As far as I know, EB games has exclusive rights to the Freedom Edition. But I just saw the statue up close today, and its a definite buy for me.

I've been buying the LE's of this series since 2, glad to see I'll be continuing the trend this year, too. A shame there's no soundtrack in here, but I'm sure a funky-looking figure can make up for that!

+1 Freedom Edition... love my useless crap! :D

I love shoving my CEs into the back of my closet to collect dust! :D

This may be the most ridiculous hype wagon I've seen for a title in years. The damn game doesn't come out for 6 months.

This is hype? I've seen worse. AC2 probably got more hype then this.

      Hype? Where?
All I've seen is the standard "looking forward to this game" comments.

I love how they always have to mention that the CE for their game comes packed with the retail game.

Still, this looks great. Especially after I cancelled my CE of Ninja Gaiden 3 after the reviews.

I will get Join or Die edition. My Alduin Statue took the last of my Collectors Shelf space...

I think you need another shelf! DO IT!!!!

Hmmm... No artbook means a no sale for me.. But the George Washington diary looks interesting

I'm thinking Join or Die. Statue is just a bit too much, although the Mayan temple looks interesting...

For those concerned, the extra missions in the previous CEs have not been at all relevent to the game's plot. They really are just an extra - a dungeon, not really connected to the story, where you can get some loot at the end. Fun, but if you don't play them you're not missing out on a thing.

Freedom Edition $108 from EB for PC? SOLD!

Also, as Tristan said, the SP content added in the special editions change absolutely nothing in the game really. Even the gear you get is replaced pretty quickly by gear in the main campaign.

How much less could you care about CE's? Statements like that are a diamond dozen.

So $20 extra gets you a steelbook case - the scourge of the game collector, it will never look right on your shelf compared to the other plastic cases - a crap figure and a bit of extra DLC which will probably be available separately (assuming Ubisoft like money)? Seriously, I'd be more tempted *without* the Steelbook, I loathe those things.

    Pass.

"Standard" Collector's Edition for me, with a normal case. And it's not exclusive so it'll be from somewhere that's going to charge me half as much.

The figure is crap? I can't find any hi-res shots of it to tell, you got a link?

Also, why would you display the steelbook? It comes in a big display box for a reason.

If you've got a large-sized collection and are anal-retentive about it like me, then displaying games in giant boxes is really impossible - takes too much space, different size to everything else - and steelbooks stand out like sore thumbs alongside the rest. Even worse is the fact that PS3 cases aren't as tall as steelbook cases.

Why invest in a large collection of something if you lack the room to display it? Seems kinda pointless.

I don't know what you're basing your "the figure is crap" opinion off, the figurines I got with AC1 and AC2 Black Edition were really well made.

Well I guess if you like them, more power to you. It's more of a general gripe, I have little room for figures so I want them to be really, really good (as in, limited release and costs $100+ good). Generally the stuff bundled with games isn't, it's mediocre mass-market produced stuff. It adds bulk and weight to the package and annoys me because I end up turfing the figure almost immediately.
