Nolan North, The Man In Every Video Game Ever Made, Is Now In Star Trek

I can’t remember the last time I played a game that didn’t feature Nolan North’s ‘everyman’ tones. With his invasion of video games complete, he’s now moving on to blockbuster movies, featuring in JJ Abram’s Star Trek 2. Apparently Abrams and his son are massive fans of Uncharted, and that’s why he got the part.

“I just worked on Star Trek 2 with J. J. Abrams,” North told Eurogamer.

“The reason I did that movie – it’s a very small role – but it’s because he and his son are huge fans of Uncharted. I met him doing some work on Super 8 and he said ‘We’re doing Start Trek, you wanna do it?’ And I said I’d love to.

“He’s a huge fan of gaming and he was telling me how people just don’t understand [the medium] yet, but they’re going to catch up. They don’t understand how amazing this technology is and it doesn’t get the respect it deserves, but if it keeps making the money it makes you’re going to see more and more people converted.”

This is interesting, for a number of reasons. Comic book movies never really took off until they were helmed by directors that truly understood the IP they were dealing with. It’s becoming more and more apparent that some directors are major video game fans. This may result in a decent video game to movie adaptation…

Anyway — it’s a top interview by Eurogamer, and it’s well worth heading there for the rest of it!

Nolan North wins part in Star Trek 2 off the back of Uncharted [Eurogamer]

  • People give North crap for being in so many video games, but he is damn good at what he does… I feel he gives proper life to not only Drake, but Salem and many other characters as well. Props to JJ for realising that video games are a valid medium, a large chunk of the general population reminds highly ignorant of this fact.

    • He’s an excellent voice actor, the problem is that the companies hire him to being basically, Nolan North and not use his voice talent (like Adventure Sphere)

      • was he Desmond?…

anyway, peopel seem t dislike drake..but dammit at least he had a personality…even if it was an annyoingly cliche one (I just finished the first Uncharted last night, it got so cliche at times it hurt)

        • yeah, He played Desmond. I think there was an interview about him complaining about having to play the same voice.

  • Good actors, good voice actors do not make.
But meh, small role, hardly going to hurt the movie, props to him, will be something to look out for.

  • I thought he was great as the Penguin in Arkham City.

Maybe he’ll be a redshirt in Star Trek..

    • Seconded, if all you expect of North is Desmond/Drake then the Penguin just blows you away!

  • It’s the immature people that trash Nolan North. The same kind that jump on the whole Chuck Norris jokes. They hardly know who he is and probably havn’t enjoyed the Uncharted series. He really showed his talent as Penguin. I didn’t even know he voiced him till long after i finished the game.

    • It wasn’t until I was looking at the list of things he is in that I found out about some voices he does, like Raphael in TMNT and Sigmund in Ratchet and Clank: ACiT.
So I agree with you, people only know the more basic stuff about him, but he can really do some cool voices.

  • North’s the Jennifer Hale of male voice actors. It’s good to know Abrams is a gamer, I wonder if Bad Robot will branch out into gaming eventually. (I saw their logo at the start of the new co-op Star Trek trailer, so that’s a start I guess.)

  • “This may result in a decent video game to movie adaptation…”

I would rather that the ‘people converted’ that Nolan/Abrams refer to would be decent film writers and directors who want to start writing and directing games, not movies about games.
