My Favorite Thing About Far Cry 3

"So what is this game?"

Seems like a simple question, right? Usually there's a simple answer: "It's a platformer where you save the princess by jumping through deserts and oceans." "It's a sci-fi shooter. You blast away aliens." "High-school simulator meets dungeon-crawler."

Far Cry 3 is a little bit harder to define. Maybe that's why I like it so much.

I started playing the third Far Cry over the weekend, and although I haven't gotten very far just yet — I've played maybe three, four hours? — I'm already in love with the Rook Islands and all of the things you can do there.

Kirk already did a great job describing the feeling of playing Far Cry 3 in his review, but I wanted to write up a few quick thoughts of my own.

What I like most about Far Cry 3 is that it defies video game genre. It dodges conventions. It's not just an open-world adventure, it's also a shooter. And an RPG. And a stealth game. And an animal hunting simulator.

Some have called it Skyrim with guns, but I think it's really more than that. Far Cry 3 is Skyrim with guns, and paragliders, and skinning, and driving, and boating, and tigers, and drug trips, and no draugr. It's a game where you can sneak up on enemies and silently snipe them with a crossbow, or explore the jungles of a LOST-like supernatural world, or just run around with an assault rifle blowing up everything you can see. It's a game that defies and combines genres to the point where it becomes something unique, something unlike just about any other game out there.

And in today's gaming world, where marketers and business executives are constantly looking to stick their games with catchy little subheads — "it's Call of Duty meets Dragon Quest, you see!" — I love seeing something that shies away from convention. Even if there is a little too much dubstep.

Wait til you get the gliding suit... Oh god it's awesome.

Glider suit? Then you've probably learnt death from above as well. If you like the glider suit then glider suit plus death from above will probably cause you to have a heart attack from the awesome. That's if you time it right. In my case that's a big if.

Yep!!!! Was wondering originally 'is d.f.a really that useful?' Then tried with the glider suit and...OMFG BEST THING EVER.

          Hmmm... Looking forward to that!

It's why I'm loving fc3 so much. They left stuff over for island 2 so you didn't peak too early. By the time you get there you're a modern Ezio so it's balls to the walls action and fun!

You people are far too easily amused.

Then tell me what games do you like? CoD series? Stop being an ass

What do we have here... ezk's comment from the community review...

"Horrible story, annoying characters, and in many places, dated visuals. But, I'm finding it to be a good 'mess around' game, ..."

So all up, you find it to be a good 'mess around game'. So all up you're amused by it ;)

Seems we're not the only ones easily amused ezk...

The game isn't good, nor is it amusing, but it's an easy jump-in, jump-out game when you don't have time for something more in-depth.

I'm so glad I didn't give Ubisoft money for it.

Overall, I don't understand everyone's excitement for it... it's really quite dull.
Taking over the enemy bases and stuff is okay fun for the first, I dunno... 5?
Then it's all the same, boring, predictable shit.

Climbing radio towers is yawn-inducing, and at times, quite glitchy if you're using a non-default FOV.

Story is bad, characters are bad.

Once you do take over the bases there's nothing interesting to do, no random enemy encounters until you're in a new area with un-taken bases... and even then later in the game when you get enemy clothing random encounters become a forgotten experience.

Exploring the island is dull and lifeless, caves are uninteresting.

As I said above, I just don't understand why everybody is jizzing in their pants over this hyped up trash?

And Letrico, don't make me laugh.

    Bad game for bad people.

Have you no heart? No sense of frolicking joy? No appreciation of a game that actually has a mission where the objective is to 'kill 15 dogs with an RPG'?

      You're a monster.

        I don't hate fun.

I clearly just enjoy different things to you people.

Overrated, I loved the first island but the second island and all the missions on it are boring.

I'm curious as to where he found this crossbow. Is it DLC maybe? watching a friend run around with the recurve bow was what got me to buy this game.

Not sure if you can get it in game but I got it with my insane edition

There is no crossbow, he must mean the bow.

Completed the single player game 100%, to then find there was another entire game waiting for me in the form of coop. Good stuff (although the lobby / matchmaking system is horrendous).

    Nice work!
Although there is no crossbow in game, only a bow. It would be quite sweet.

If you like the wingsuit and want to see it use in a less traditional sense, have a look at this video i put together -

Oh look, its the negativity crowd who clicked on a link knowing full well there was an article about a game they don't like! They absolutely MUST let everyone know about their oh so important negative view of the game in question!

It also seems that they think anyone who disagrees is below them! Wow what a contribution to the site, how could we ever live without your negative attitude towards Far Cry 3!

    Hurrr durrrrrr.

Why do people keep comparing this to Skyrim?

... It is so obviously Red Dead Redemption on an island.

My favourite thing about the game is driving the jeeps and fast vehicles around.. they handle very well and it's a great experience.. I sometimes will drive 2 km instead of using the fast travel because I like it that much :)

I do that in Just Cause 2. I set a waypoint to somewhere on the other side of the map and just drive for half an hour. Can't wait to do it in FC2 too.
