Grand Theft Auto V Was Delayed To Make The Game 'As Good As It Needs To Be'

Why was Grand Theft Auto V delayed? Well, despite the wacked out, half baked conspiracy theories doing the rounds, Rockstar is staying strong: Grand Theft Auto V was delayed for quality control reasons, and that's the bottom line, apparently.

While some folks may have floated certain ideas about strategic placement, subverting other big releases and such like, Rockstar was quick to shoot such rumours down, and threatened big time bans within its own community to the folks that continued to be abusive regarding the delay.

Hey all, we understand many of you guys are disappointed with this news – unfortunately sometimes such delays are necessary in all forms of entertainment, and especially in the case of a game experience as massive and complex as GTAV. However this does not give you free reign to be abusive in comments. The general rules of common courtesy, decency and behavior as listed above the Comment Box still apply here, therefore anyone continuing to post abusive comments will have their privileges suspended.

To those of you saying or seeing various conspiracy theories about there being some other ulterior motive for this delay, rest assured that they’re all nonsense – literally the only reason we’ve delayed the release is because we want the game to be as good as it needs to be.

So there you have it. The only question is: how good does a Grand Theft Auto game have to be to get released? How long is a piece of string? How much wood could a woodchuck chuck?

Big questions.

Thanks Joystiq

    It was all @markserrels fault!

He orchestrated the downfall of GTA V from a bunker in Serbia!

no, this was not Mark's doing ... wee baby serrels, maybe. But not Mark, he's far too innocent

        Innocent? That's just his cover

I am innocent, I may have been present during the poisoning of Rasputin, but I am still innocent!

Perhaps it was his evil twin, Marktonio Serrelis? complete with tweedly moustache, cape and a bad eurpoean accent

but at the same time ... Spaghett wouldn't lie. I'M SO CONFLICTED!!!!

Doesn't Mark already have a 'bad European accent'? As in the Scottish accent sounds bad and it is sort of in Europe?

It was his evil twin, Wark Serrels.

Today, you win the internet. Just today though, tomorrow somebody else wins.

Good, i'd prefer waiting for a good game then getting a half done shitty game straight away

Yeah definitely, I'd much prefer to wait to play the game when it's better rather than fixes being released after I've finished it.

And we've already been waiting 4 years so what's a few more months matter?

Its the best reason to delay a game. Im ok with this. Usually I hate the term first world problems but those mad at this have a massive case of this.

I don't really spend that much time trawling the various gaming sites, and even less reading the comments sections - are people actually seriously angry about this? Why would anybody be angry? I mean it's been... what... 5 years since GTA4? If they've waited 5 years what the hell difference does it make if they have to wait a few months more? Just play something else while you wait. Jesus.

Well the the tin-foil hat community should remember that GTA4 was supposed to be released in Sep-Oct but got delayed to April, the exact opposite of this so called conspiracy, which also didn't hurt it or Red Dead's sales and even LA Noire sold well in an April/May release.

A more interesting conspiracy theory would be Rockstar only changing the release date to mess with other publishers who now will be re-evaluating and pushing forward/back their titles so not to clash with the years biggest release.

I only hope that if new hardware from Sony/MS is released late this year that GTA5 will not be lost in the all the Next-Gen hype.

Delayed to add more phonecalls, they obviously saw the positive feedback on the phonecalls in IV.

Has there been any Rockstar game that's ever come out on the original date that they set?

I'm very excited for GTA V, I just hope they fix the driving mechanics from GTA IV.

No, they're simply making a PS4 version. Rock Star can say whatever they like cause they are ROCKSTAR, but it's more than likely delayed because of a PS4 version.

Sick of gamers whinging about everything...

Delaying for quality is far better than releasing a buggy game and patching all the mistakes later.

I really don't understand why some people are so angry over this. We never had a concrete release date to begin with, only a general timeframe. If Rockstar has delayed GTA V to make it even more awesome then I'm totally fine with it.

It's not a Grand Theft Auto game, if there is not a delay.

Don't we all complain about day 1 patches to fix games? That they are doing this to prevent that is a good thing right?

All too often we hear about companies pushing unfinished products out the door early, it's nice to hear that some companies want the game to be done when it's done.

By "Good" they mean PC release, right?

First thing I thought [Hoped] was that this will allow a PC version to release alongside the console versions. This would solve the issue/ temptation of buying it for console months before seeing a PC release. Part of me can't resist, but the snobby PC part thinks I'll spoil the wonderment of it all. I got a PC that will run Crysis 3 on very high settings (based on hardware requirements) so I'm pretty well set up for GTA V on PC.... I think. I'll burn the consoles. Problem solved.

It's hilarious watching the whiners cry rivers over the official release date yet they are still the very same people that complain when a game needs a day one patch. Rest assured, they'll still be complaining when it's a month out, and most likely complaining as they pick up the pre-order...

The reason for the delay is that they're actually trying to make the game worse, but someone in marketing thought it wouldn't be a good idea to tell that to the press.

Good call Rockstar. It's great to see Developers taking the reigns back and holding their horses. 'The Art of Design.'
Publishers need to realise too - "you ain't got the record if you ain't got the Artist" (Warren-G/Reality)
