So, I Guess We're Supposed To Just Imagine The PS4?

Yesterday, I posted a story called "Goodbye Fantasy PlayStation 4s! It's Been Fun", thinking that Sony would unveil the PlayStation 4 today. Silly me! Sony did unveil the PS4, but didn't show off its new console. Because that's what you do at console reveals these days. You don't show the console.

That's not true, actually. Back at the 2011 E3 gaming expo, Nintendo unveiled its new console, the Wii U and spent most of the time talking about the its new controller, the Wii U GamePad. But even then, Nintendo showed off the Wii U console. It was tangible. You could see and touch it. It felt real.

But, for some reason, Sony decided not to show the PS4 console today. Instead, it will wait until a later date to show us the gaming machine.

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida told Kotaku that the reason why the Tokyo-based console maker didn't show off the PS4 at the reveal was "we have to keep something new for later. Otherwise you'd get bored."

Pretty sure nobody would get bored. At all.

Not having the console at the event doesn't matter. When you get right down to it, the most important things are the games and the experiences the PS4 will offer. But yet, it does matter. It matters very much.

This is a console reveal. You need to show the console. It's a psychological thing: We need to see the box that will power the games and experiences the PS4 offers. Otherwise, the PS4 will feel incredibly abstract. It won't feel real.

Worse yet, it makes it feel like there was no payoff to the PS4 reveal. No, here's the new controller, here are the new cool games, and finally, here is the machine that will make it all happen. Bam, bam, bam. We're one bam too short, and that's unsatisfying. The entire evening never built to a climax. It just ended, sorely missing that one last bam.

So in the meantime, we are stuck with these fake PS4s. These concept consoles. They're the stuff of fantasy and dreams. And right now, that's all we got.

3rd one up from the bottom looks like a sandwich maker. Plays games, makes cheese melt....

One looks like a coffee machine too. Sony might have to partner with delonghi

Yeah kinda like how PS3 looks like a George Forman Grill

I'd say it looks more like a Roomba. Wander free, my PS4, and give me clean clean carpets!

One thing I would like to see, an external Power supply unit a la x360.. to reduce console size and temperature, and a cinch to swap if it sharts itself

we should all ban together to officially make the work "shart" part of the english dictionary!

Agreed. I've found this to actually be pretty important now. My 360 slim power supply died due to an electrical overload on the house during a storm but the 360 itself was fine. Much cheaper to replace than a 360. This would be the same case.

The real reason they didn't reveal the console to us is for the publisity.

Not more of this stupid line of thought. The final design and silicon isn't ready, that's it. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what the thing looks like, you're going to stuff in a spot next to your TV and forget about it. Yesterday's press conference (at least the first hour) was extremely refreshing in it's approach, focusing on the general mantra moving forward and what their goals are for developer relations are.

      This. Absolutely 100% this.

It's a game console guys, not a friggin painting. I don't care what it's gonna look like and neither should you. In the end you're just going to stick it next to your TV or even underneath it. As long as it plays games and works as you expect, what does it matter what it looks like?

The original PS3 looked like a sandwich toaster. That didn't stop people buying it.

I think Sony might take some cues from one of their upcoming BDP:

They all look like they came out of Bang & Olufsen?

Oh no, there is no picture of the console. How can I base my buying decisions on how it looks instead of what it does?

At first i was disappointed and thought it was dumb move.. until i realised that i STILL want to see the final shape of PS4.. now i think it's a smart play. They get to ride the hype wave until the next event and stop Microsoft from grabbing ALL the headlines later since Sony can still reveal the console, the price etc. just like a fresh launch.. this way Sony gets to have their cake and eat it too.

Werent we just told to go fuck ourselves, called 'ungrateful' by Luke Hopewell for this? Oh yeah... Thats right. We were.

At this stage of things, especially after hearing about the "always on" and "no second hand games" rumours, the actual physical appearance is the least of my concern.

As long as it's a black box that will be capable of running while lying down underneath my television (ie, not forced to use a stand like the first few above, or round and likely to roll off the shelf like another of the above), I don't care what it looks like. What does it matter? It will be hiding in the shadows. (I'd prefer minimal flashy lights, but those can be solved with a little electrical tape.)

I dont know why some people are so wrapped up in wanting to know what it looks like... as if not knowing what the box looks like completely ruins the experience or something. Who cares. They're probably still working on it.

Sony probably didn't have a final and complete design to show. They had the press release early to beat MS out of the gate for this generation.

Sony took a huge hit stumbling out of the gate with the current generation. they simply wanted to be on the front foot

“we have to keep something new for later. Otherwise you’d get bored.”
Pretty sure nobody would get bored. At all.

And that's why you're second-rate journalist who doesn't work in marketing. It was a console announcement, not a console reveal.

But yet, it does matter. It matters very much.

    ... ...
And yet, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter at all.

    No. It isn't.
No, they don't. Not at all.

Otherwise, the PS4 will feel incredibly abstract. It won’t feel real.

Oh my! Will you start bleeding from the nose? Who's your Constant, brotha?
