Tell Us Dammit: Lucasarts Memories

Lucasarts is no more and there’s a lot of things to be sad about. The loss of jobs is the big one and the other, I think, is the work that will never be seen or played, just buried on some dusty server somewhere. That’s tragic. But the positive thing is that Lucasarts leaves behind an insane legacy, dozens of games that literally changed lives. I thought we might talk about our favourite Lucasarts memories.

Like many people, The Secret of Monkey Island was my first Lucasarts game, although back then it was Lucasfilm Games. That game started my love affair with graphic adventures and from that point on I played almost every adventure game that had Lucasarts on the box.

Monkey Island was weirdly important to me when I was a kid. I once tried to grow a ponytail like Guybrush Threepwood. I used to try and go on adventures. I’d fill a backpack full of ‘items’ and I’d go out and try and solve puzzles in real life. So bizarre. When I first got Xbox Live my gamertag was ‘G Threepwood’.

It’s crazy — but those games just had a massive impact on my life: they helped define what I enjoy, what I find funny. It’s a shame to see it all go.
