What If Evangelion Had A 1970s-Style Opening Theme Song

Ever wonder what popular anime theme songs of the '60s, '80s, '90s and '00s would sound like if they were all made in the style of '70s robot anime like Gundam or Mazinger Z? Luckily, this album has the answer: they would sound awesome.

Released late last year, Japanese singer Ichiro Kageyama takes the themes of nine popular anime -- Neon Genesis Evangelion, Sazae-san, Touch, Ikkyu-san, Sally the Witch, Cutie Honey, Kiteretsu Daihyakka, Cat’s Eye, and Pretty Cure Max Heart -- and gives them the best retro covers you’ll hear this side of Bioshock Infinite.

The album -- aptly titled “If All Anime Songs Were in the Style of Showa Era Robot Anime” (もし、アニソンがすべて昭和のロボットアニメ風だったら) -- is available for purchase on Japanese Amazon and iTunes.

gotta admit, as retro as that 70's version is, it is still actually appropriate for the visuals. the original for NGE already sounded retro in itself so this new spin isn't too far from the original :)

Got some real Tomoyasu Hotei vibes from that singer.

i dont know, i love mecha animes but i just cant get into Evangelion. Ive tried a few times watching it but it just bores me.

Probably because Evangelion, while having some brutal mech scenes, is more about the characters and their relationships (mixed in with some clandestine plots and such) more so than robots.
What makes it so endearing to a lot of people is that at its heart, it's an exaggerated story of a boy maturing and facing adversity and it tells this story very cleverly (often-times very subtly too)
I love Mecha anime to death like you but Evangelion still tops the cake for me.

What on earth have you been watching then? Transformers? :o

Evangelion is where it's at. :)

Listening to this has just inspired me to rebuy this show.

Try the new movie reboot. The third one is out on DVD now and there's another one coming next year to finish the series.

It cleans up a lot of the dead weight in the series and kills a lot of the annoying shit that the main character does. It's also a lot more action-y, so it might be more up your alley.

I didn't get a particularly 70s vibe from that. I was hoping they might re-cut the visuals somehow.

Cowboy Bebop, on the other hand, is pure 70s...

Man, Evangelion, I haven't thought of that for ages. It was the first anime I really got into.

Asuka's fight (spoilers) at the end - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG7b17XLz5Y
When Bach kicks in at 1 minute, wow, I remember being really effected by that.

And this music - ooh the feels http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVW7ahL6p9s

But nothing really beats "IT'S THE FIN-AL COUNT-DOWN!" for intro music. :D

I had completely forgotten how much Evangelion did for me back in the day. I don't even know if I'd enjoy it today, but at the time...
