DayZ Alpha Released

The long-in-development standalone version of zombie sim DayZ is now out in the open.

Creator Dean Hall just released an early version of the game on Steam's Early Access program, and it's available on his website, too, although right now that's getting hammered.

This is the first official release of DayZ in non-mod form. Originally designed as a zombie-packed add-on for the military shooter Arma II, DayZ exploded in popularity last year, leading Hall to start work on a standalone version.

"DayZ Early Access is your chance to experience DayZ as it evolves throughout its development process," Hall writes. "Be aware that our Early Access offer is a representation of our core pillars, and the framework we have created around them. It is a work in progress and therefore contains a variety of bugs. We strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle."

    Is it???
    Can it be???
    YES!!!!!!!
I was considering getting ARMA II and just modding it, but I knew it would come out eventually!

Looks pretty cool but i'm kind of unsure about the direction rocket is pushing it. I like the realism elements in the mod but they don't go too far as to make it unenjoyable. Rocket seems to be aiming a bit higher in realism this time round and i'm not sure if it will work or just dump an extra burden on players.

Im curious as to what realistic elements have you worried? As all I really can see is item degredation, which is a necessary tool to counter KoS mentalities.

Degredation is something that right now i'm not a fan of but I know I will get used to it. My main worry is the impact that the environment will have on the player. For example maintaining warmth, hunger and hydration all seem to be more difficult tasks now. From what I have seen, Rocket is making the environment more volatile and that's something that can be hard to do without pushing it overboard.

True I guess, but currently the mod was pushing the same thing. The warmth feature never worked in the mod (unfortunately, but there were easy methods to counter it with Heatpacks, and some mods had clothing etc.).

The infections and that were the most annoying thing, but they've been tweaking ever since they introduced it. And at least Rocket has the mindframe of "I'll introduce whatever I think may be good for the game, but if the community hates it, or it doesn't work, i'll remove it". He has always been like that, so at least we know we have a developer that is willing to change and tweak additions to the game based on whether they are accepted by the games community.

Rocket is indeed a very community wise dev. Even though I may not like some features, I will continue to support his work.

Personally, this is exactly why i'm keen. I'm so sick of 'no loss scenario' style games.

Already purchased on Steam. Boom! There goes my holiday break.

I've been playing Breaking Point mod for Arma III and it looks better than this.

I had a go of it today.......at the moment i'm a thirsty tired asian looking guy hiding in a dark shack in the middle of nowhere......but i do have a wrench so I guess i'm winning....

      Update
I played again and met a nice fellow....I took him to a pond I was drinking from cause he was thirsty. Then he punched me in the face and took my wrench.......so now I'm back to square one, only with a headache..

This is the kind of amazing impossible fantasy world we all dreamt of as kids, finally a reality thanks to modern computers... get punched in the face by some derro at a pond who then steals your wrench!

          lols.

I just watched a 3 hour recorded live stream on youtube.. Doesn't look like I hoped it would.. The zombies look dumb (flashlight in the face looking right at you, takes no action at times it seemed), a lot of items on the ground that would be very useful in reality (like screwdrivers) that were useless.. A lot of locked doors.. Combat that looked painful because of some kind of holstering system..

Quite disappointing, really not what I was hoping it would be. Are you enjoying it, @boogoose ? Tell me some of its redeeming qualities maybe so I can have hope once more. :D
