Happy Friday everyone! Welcome to Community Kudos.
Only a few noms to report this week!
Let’s start with a Welbot mega nom shall we!
Welbot
First off, Qumulys! Old skool and not so present these days TAYbie! He gifted me Shadow Warrior for xmas! He totally shouldn’t have cos he’s probably as bad off financially as I am, but he did it anyway! I’m eternally thankful to him as I’ve been wanting to play this game since its release, and now I can! Have been having a blast playing through it so far too!
Next off is our resident champ The Cracks! He always surprises me at odd times with his little gifts, and what a gift it was! Magic The Gathering 2014! Wow! Can’t wait to get in to some multiplayer matches!
NegativeZero is the third recipient this round, thanks to him gifting me AntiChamber! Another game I’ve been wanting to play since its release, and have been enjoying scrambling my brain trying to figure this one out! J Mucho thanks!
This one’s not so much a nom as a special mention for the wonderful guys at Pixel-Otaku (probably mostly Shiggyninty’s doing, but they’re all great!) I won a competition on their site to win a game, but he/they ended up giving me 4 games instead! Bioshock Infinite, Gears of War 2, Fruit Ninja Kinect, and The Gunstringer! Bloody champs I tells ya!
Also want to extend a heartfelt thankyou to BeardyMcMuttonchops and his Mrs for inviting me to her b’day dinner! Was great to go out and have a good laugh and good feed and meet some new people!
That’s about it for this round I think! Hope you had a Merry Xmas and smashing new year! Best wishes for you and all the TAYbies in the coming year!
Jesus Christ, Hermes did his nom thing where he replaces all of the vowels with only one vowel. Every time I read these bloody noms I just sort of mumble. I defy you to read this out loud!
Hermes

Sciencejazzy.

And finally, we have this nom from Alex…
AlexPants
I know the Masha edition of Kudos already happened, but I have a nom for him. On Saturday, Masha braved hours of trackwork on a really hot day to film his scenes as the police chief in the next TAYfilm. We really appreciated it and he did an EXCELLENT job – can’t wait to show everyone.
You have yourself a grand long weekend
I mentioned this to Sughly in an email earlier today, but I might as well through it out there: I’m thinking about completely rebooting all of Kotaku’s regulars, getting rid of a few, starting some new ones, etc.
Anyway, my question is this: are you guys still interested in Community Kudos? Do you still want it on the site? I’ve noticed a real dearth in noms over the past month or so. I fully take my part of the blame the Community Kudos being a little bit flat recently, but I’m more than willing to change the format or do something different, or completely can it if you guys and girls are over it? Suggestions are totally welcome!
Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there!
Congratulations to The Cracks! You are the winner of this week’s Community Kudos!
Community Kudos is your chance to reward Kotaku readers/posters who have done incredible things throughout the past week: sporadic acts of kindness, deft commenting skills — if someone deserves to be called out for being an incredible human being, Community Kudos is the place to do it. Send nominations directly to me at this address! The winner gets a cool prize from my massive box of stuff.*
Disclaimer — I’m am really bad at sending stuff out, I have a list, I haven’t forgotten, I’m totally getting round to it. Sorry everyone!

Way to go, Cracks! So kind!
As for Community Kudos?
I stopped nominating cause I realized I was only nominating my real life pals over and over again and that was weird. Friends do kind things for one another and you don’t need to shout out what they did to let them know you appreciate them. So, yeah, that’s why I’ve stopped… I’m sorry about all the repetitive e-mails I must’ve sent you too, Mark. You’re a trooper to take ’em seriously.
I should’ve nominated people today. I would like to see Community Kudos continue.
I nom you for that!
That’s not a reason to nom D=
I will rollover my noms for next week then.
I may be very easily impressed!
I have no idea how to respond to this.
I could also be joking, I do that from time to time.
Mostly the times from when I’m awake to the times when I’m asleep
Maybe have it as a once a month thing instead of a weekly thing?
I think a monthly nom sesh would work better than weekly noms.
Maybe make Kudos not a weekly thing but maybe a monthly thing? I don’t always have stuff to nominate people for but yeah I do see people do good things that are worth while but always forget since I am not around much and yeah, but I reckon a month would allow things to accumulate and would be alright in my books! But that’s just my 2 cents.
I like the call-outs and I reckon it’s a nice touch to have a venue for recognizing the awesome which is frequently exhibited by Kotaku AU folk, but I don’t think it would hurt anyone for it to be a less-than-regular feature. Say… as the noms come in. Monthly? It would certainly provide a bit more competition than, ‘whoever’s nominated this week gets it by default’, which could in turn make it feel just that little bit more special. Plus gives us a bigger cluster of nom-worthy memories to review in one sitting.
Edit: HAH. Like… three people saying the same thing while I was typing up mine.
Edit2: Also, grats cracks. If memory servies, he’s been pretty funny/insightful this week, too. 🙂
I like turtles.
Turtle soup?
Flu is The Shredder. The Shredder is Flu. Somehow, I’m not surprised!
I personally have never been enamored with the concept of Kudos having a ‘winner’ with a ‘prize’ attached. IMO it de-values everyone else that might have contributed. Additionally I feel like the same people seem to ‘win’ repeatedly, which possibly is more a commentary on how awesome they are, but that might just be a perception thing since I generally don’t pay much attention to Kudos in the first place.
I personally feel like Community Kudos purpose was great for community building back in the day and now the community is ‘built’ it might have the opposite effect. (As Neg alluded to above, giving the feeling of being an outsider if you’re not part of this tight group of people.) I do remember before I was a regular I used to read this thing and feel like it wasn’t for me and I wasn’t properly part of this community. I don’t think any one means to exclude any one else, it’s just something that happens organically… I think in its current form it has outstayed its welcome, but there’s a place for it if retooled or something. *shrugs*
You’re a retooled!
I mean, yeah, you’re probably right.
It’s OK, I don’t think there have actually been prizes for many, many months now. It’s more of a mutual appreciation society. And anybody can get in on that!
True, but if that’s the case then there doesn’t need to be a ‘winner’ does there? it’s not like it’s a competition.
I’d nominate Cracks just for his avatar. It makes me lol.
Yay for TheCracks! true champ indeed!
As for Kudos, I dig it. It’s a nice little wrap up of the week that was when people actually do nom. I’m guessing it’s been fairly quiet of late due mostly to the holiday break. It always seems to die down a bit at various points throughout the year, but I can understand why you would want something new in its place.. question is.. what would that be?! 🙂
Weekly, monthly… why does the fortnight never get any love?
I keep forgetting it exists until I see it on fridays and think “Oh yeah, I should have nominated someone or other because they did or said that thing that was interesting, impressive or amusing”
I was about to say is this a cop out because you realised you don’t have enough prizes for everyone who won it?
I think monthly would work well, I feel a lot of people just forget about community noms by the end of the week. Maybe I should send my noms on the Monday instead.
Mark doesn’t give out prizes. I’ve won 2 or 3 times, never received a prize. I think the truth is he never had any to begin with!
I think fortnightly would work best. Clearly, a week is too short a timeframe. Monthly could definitely work, but I would prefer fortnightly.
However, if it will go monthly, I think it would be pretty cool if we had a honorific like “Otaku of the month” or something. I suppose it would make community kudos a bit more relevant if we could say “Congrats, theCracks, you won January,” rather than saying “You win this week.” Just my two cents.
Me jimlock say, Nice one, the slags!
Keep up the good work, see you on Dinobot Island.
Seems like the consensus seems to be to keep Kudos, make it less about the prizes (which Batguy totally right said hasn’t happened for a while) and make it fortnightly rather than monthly?
I can get down with that.
Reminders to send in nominations would help.
Also I like the idea of something involving prizes because they’re fun, maybe move those to something different but not requiring a particular skill like drawing. Oh and if it involves facebook, needless to say I’m off!
I like kudos, it gives a way to say thanks to people who have done something note or that you agreed with outside of the love fest that TAY can be.
I agree that getting rid of the winner is a good idea, saying that somebody else is better than the rest of the people nominated really goes against what it should be about.
Another couple of random ideas
– Have a morning post that was kudos reminder
– In that post have a list of ‘award categories’ so that people have an idea on what to nom for
– This could be things like ‘Agree to disagree but thanks for being civil’ or ‘Thanks for the advice’
<3 to all

Thanks guys!
Much love!
Also, I vote for keeping Kudos, but making less regular.
It probably eats too much fibre
Well you know that kodus will be on the porridge diet
