Nintendo’s experimenting with cross-buy using Mario vs. Donkey Kong Tipping Stars. Buy a copy on Wii U, get a code for 3DS and vice versa. Mario vs. Donkey Kong Tipping Stars is the latest in Nintendo’s series of simple puzzlers. It doesn’t look much different this time, but at least Nintendo’s catching up with Sony and Apple?
Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto actually joked about this with Stephen back at E3.
Totilo: It’s not really a question, but Super Mario Bros. 3 had just been released on Virtual Console in the States on 3DS and Wii U on the same day. You had to pay for it for each download. You couldn’t get it for free [on the other platform]…
Miyamoto: Ohhh. That’s right. I’m sorry.
[laughter]
Totilo: Maybe you guys can do that differently next time.
Miyamoto: I’ll think about it.
Thanks for thinking about it, Miyamoto.

Presumably this is a code that will only work on your 3DS with the same NNID or something? You won’t be able to go and give it to a friend instead?
Details.
It’s an actual download code. They actually suggested during last night’s Nintendo Direct that you share the code with a friend if you wish.
…that sounds too unbelievable to be true.
Go to their website and watch a replay of the Direct. This was on early in the piece.
I DON’T BELIEVE THEM EITHER
About f-ing time 😛
Looks like a fun game too, hopfully it will do well and Nintendo might add some more cross-buy stuff.
still not tied directly to your account rather than your console?
Assuming it is implemented for the user’s benefit and not Nintendo’s, then about time!
Now do SNES on 3ds!
