The Hugo-winning Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem could become Amazon’s Game of Thrones. A new report from Financial Times suggests Amazon is pursuing a deal to make a three-season television show based on the trilogy from Liu Cixin, and it may be willing to pay up to $US1 billion ($1.3 billion) to do so.

According to the Financial Times report, international investors say Amazon is negotiating for the rights to produce three seasons based on Remembrance of Earth’s Past, the sci-fi trilogy more commonly known by the title of its first book, The Three-Body Problem.
In a statement reported by Chinese news outlets, YooZoo Pictures stated that it remains the sole owners for the film and TV rights for The Three-Body Problem, though it didn’t comment on whether Amazon had approached the company or were in talks with them to collaborate on this reported streaming project. Cixin was also asked about this development by Chinese news outlet MTime.com, where he revealed he knew nothing about the project and doesn’t know if he’d be invited to work on it. We reached out to Amazon and YooZoo for comment but had not heard back at time of writing.
Amazon, much like Netflix and other streaming services, has been making some big money moves as of late. Its previously reported Lord of the Rings deal was rumoured to cost $US500 million ($650 million) for two seasons. While $US1 billion ($1.3 billion) is quite a bit more, considering the Financial Times report says it would be for three seasons of The Three-Body Problem, it doesn’t seem all that unlikely.
YooZoo Pictures – part of Youzu Interactive – has spent years working on a film version of The Three-Body Problem. Back in 2014, it was said that five films were being made from the series with the author himself writing three of the screenplays. A later report said it would be released in July of 2016 (with filming apparently having wrapped in 2015), but it is currently listed on IMDB for 2018. There haven’t been many updates since so that project, at least, remains in limbo.
The novel is one of the most-successful sci-fi books in China’s history, and an English translation by Ken Liu won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015. A major studio adaptation seems like a sure win, for both Chinese and international audiences. It’s no surprise that Chinese fans on Weibo and other social media platforms seem thrilled about the idea of Amazon adapting their beloved sci-fi series. We’ll see what happens next.

Did the author of this article really not think to say anything at all about what the books series is actually about? All I know of it is that there’s 3 books in the series and it’s ‘Sci-fi’ and from the picture, involves a pyramid and a moon.
Read the first book or even listen to it on Audible it will get you hooked.
Tell me what it’s about and I might. Otherwise, meh.
Right? Lol
Thanks, added to my future reading list, sounds good.
Yeah I also wouldn’t have minded perhaps just a little synopsis of this series I have also never heard of.
I clicked hoping to find out a little plot but all I know about is how much was paid for it.
Wouldn’t have hurt.
First book I felt was a little slow, second book was brilliant, third was very interesting but I hated the main character.
Huh – well the premise of the books is pretty great but the characters for the most part are pretty unrelatable (Luo Ji is an exception).
COPY, PASTE
MY JOB SI DONE
Seriously a smidgen of plot detail would be great.
