Maybe you haven’t heard of lewd visual novel Sakura Spirit, which is currently available on Steam. That’s OK, because Sakura Spirit’s Steam reviews are here to help.
Even if you have no interest in playing it, it’s hard not to be struck by the reviews of Sakura Spirit — most are silly. And given that the game is, as one reviewer calls it, the “closest thing to hentai in steam,” a lot of the reviews reference sex. Fair warning!
First, so you get a sense of what the game looks like, here’s a trailer:
Granted, once in-game, the stuff you see might be a little less, err, wholesome. Still, the game looks like standard fare as far as visual novels of this type go, right? It’s not that the game is of particular note, or that the game is good/worth playing, but rather that it was recently released on Steam — so there are a bunch of fresh Steam reviews for it. Most are reviews are rather ridiculous. Some are kind of uncomfortable.
Let’s take a look at what people are saying about the game, shall we?
I think my favourite part is the constant allegation that the game is short, and yet there are a number of people with a ridiculous number of hours in the game. Obviously its easy to just leave the game running, but still — kind of funny.

The advent of idling for Steam cards kind of makes the ‘hours played’ stat pretty pointless.
(Though a low number is a decent indicator. People may still have an opinion based on a ‘Bucaneer’s Demo’, but if they didn’t like it, why did they buy it?)
Edit: I haven’t checked yet, but if this game has the same audience for character portraits and backgrounds as Agarest’s ‘scantily clad anime girl’ fans, I expect a full suite of Steam cards/background to sell for more than the game itself.
I’m not sure it has trading cards. It didn’t when it released, apparently Valve rejected the art 😛
Not surprised, am amused. 🙂
The reviews would be funnier if they were spontaneous, but people go out of their way to try to leave comedy reviews on games these days to score upvotes, which kinda strips the amusement for me. Articles like this just come across as “look at these people deliberately trying to be funny”.
deliberate humor, one of many sickening atrocities committed by mankind
If you say so. All I said was it strips the amusement for me when it’s clearly staged. The same goes for stand-up comedians, the ones who deliver their bits with the appearance of spontaneity are funnier than the ones where you can hear them mentally reading off the script they prepared earlier.
These reviews used to have the appearance of spontaneity. Now that everyone’s doing it for interweb points, they’re just like the comedian reciting off his script.
Sorry but the sarcasm behind your Steam review loses a bit of credibility when you’ve already logged 10 hours in the damn game.
Nah, since Steam doesn’t do refunds, the best chance you have of making your money back is to let the game idle long enough for you to unlock all the cards, then sell them.
That’s not the great indicator of hypocrisy that it used to be thanks to the card system rewarding play-time (that you don’t actively need to be playing for).
I’ve had people ask me about games I’ve had 12+ hours logged against, but I’ve had to apologize that I can’t really give them an informed opinion because the only thing I had open was the loader app, left running while I did something else, like work or sleep or play games I was more interested in.
oh, well that kind of outs me as a pc gaming noob, I had no idea that was something people even did (or that selling cards was a thing. thats a thing?)
It’s totally a thing! Although as @negativezero said above, it might not be a thing in this instance since the game in question may not have cards yet. So your barb would be totally valid. 🙂
And yeah you can sell Steam cards. It’s actually pretty quick and easy to do and in a game’s early release days can net you a tidy sum per card – especially foils. I’ve sold some foils for upwards of twenty dollars, but usually you’ll be lucky to get a buck. Depends on the game and the audience. All the same, you idle in the game you get m allotment of free cards and they all sell for something, so it’s usually worth doing if you were leaving the PC on anyway.
Turns out this game is the only steam game under the headings fanservice & erotica, *thought of crazy idea* maybe valve should localise other ‘fanservicey’ games in the r18 catergory
There’s no localization involved here. While it might look like a Japanese game, it actually isn’t. It was developed and published only in English.
I don’t know how they managed to be so sloppy with the English, it’s cringe worthy in parts. And while the graphics look really nice I wouldn’t suggest the game. If you want something similar there’s hundreds of anime, manga or eroge that would fit the bill and be better. Oh and choices don’t matter it’s more like a story (even then its weak).
