While I wouldn’t go as far as calling Destiny and Phantasy Star Online the same game, this lovely chart from Redditor KytorIndustries makes a compelling argument that they pretty much are.
Fans of Sega’s Phantasy Star Online series have been making the comparison since Destiny was initially announced, amused that the cool new game everyone was excited about was a lot like the cool old game they’d been playing for years. The view might be different, but the feeling’s the same.
Or it was. At this point Phantasy Star Online 2 has four character races and four classes. We’ll see if Destiny catches up by the time it’s finished.

Half life 3 confirmed !!
Except the Ghost is in NOOOO way as cool or useful as the PSO Mags….
I had winged shoulder cannons……. they were GIANT wings…. with CANNONS!!!!!
goddamn i miss PSO 🙁
PSO has the better story.
So would many other games….
but lobby soccer though?
If it was a new PSO I’d buy, destiny no way.
The biggest difference though is that Destiny actually released in English. 🙁 Still waiting for PSO2, Sega.
PSO also had over 6 times the amount of levels you could reach. Not that I was ever actually reach level 200 though.
However you also need to point out that at least you can play Destiny online down here, unlike PSO on GC…
Actually IIRC PSO2 has 5 classes since Episode 3 came out… the basic Force, Hunter and Ranger classes (along w/ their own sub classes) , the Braver class which came out w/ the new race and the new Bouncer class!
