Microsoft is re-mastering the first Gears of War game for Xbox One. And while the other Gears games won’t be getting the same treatment, you will be able to play them on the company’s newest home console.
An morning announcement from Microsoft says that people who get Gears of War: Ultimate Edition this fall will be able to play other games in the third-person shooter franchise:
By playing Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox Live from Aug. 25 through Dec. 31, 2015, you’ll get access to Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment in Backward Compatibility when it launches this fall.
All Gears of War titles will be supported on Backward Compatibility when it launches publicly this fall. This means if you own Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3or Gears of War: Judgment on Xbox 360, you’ll be able to play them on your Xbox One and utilise some of your favourite next-gen features like Game DVR, Snap, screenshots and more. You can even keep all your previously-saved files, game add-ons, achievements and play with friends on Xbox Live no matter which Xbox console they’re on. For those of you in the Xbox One preview program who just can’t wait, the originalGears of War is available today in Backward Compatibility.
Note that the press release says you’ll need to have played Gears Ultimate by the end of this calendar year to unlock the other games. So that means no waiting until next year if you want the whole series on Xbox One.

This will get me to play 3 & Judgement when compatibility drops. Woo?
Question regarding backwards compat: If I have played these games on 360 will my xbox one recognise this? or will I have to have the original disk?
Why oh why did I trade in my 360 collection…
You need the disc!
You need either the disc or a digital license. Having played a game doesn’t entitle your account to the license.
Wait… so you have to buy the new GoW remaster to be able to access backwards compatibility for the rest?? Anyone who wants to play the series on their XBone would surely already own the 360 version of the first game. This feels like a bit of a middle finger if true.
Or is it that the other games will automatically be added to your account if you buy the GoW1 remaster? I’m not clear on it…
They are probably doing something similar to fallout 4. Where if you play this before the end date you get free digital copies of the games for xbox360 which you can then play via backwards compatibility. So if you already own the discs or a digital copy you will be able to play then when they are released on backwards compatible.
If you already own a disc or digital copy of any of the games, you will be able to use them when backwards compatibility launches later this year.
If you don’t own them and you buy the remaster and play it while signed into xbox live between those dates you’ll get GOW 1, 2, 3 and Judgment added to your library for free.
Exactly this
I take it to mean that: if you play GOW Ultimate edition, then you get access to all the games whether you own them or not, but if you own the discs then you will also have access to those specific games whether you play the ultimate edition or not. Is that right?
If you already own the discs or have the digital licenses.
But this statement makes it seem like you get access regardless of whether you own the discs or not?
Yeah the Ulitmate edition will give you the old games as well.
I was just pointing out that the old discs or digital licenses work with backwards compatability.
Ah righto, that is what I thought too 🙂 Although, I own them all anyway, and will still be buying the remake so I’m pretty much sorted either way lol
because i can’t already play them on my chipped 360 for free right?
Hi
When will we be getting GOW 2, 3 and judgement? Does anyone know?
