Let’s discuss one of the greatest things of modern living.
Toast. Hot, crusty, crunchy bread.
It’s one of the greatest comfort foods: getting a piece of bread and slathering some warm, or cold, condiment right over the top. Butter until it glistens and melts. Fatty peanut butter that makes your mouth go all gummy. Homely apricot jam. Or cream cheese with a ton of smoked salmon lopped on top.
And then there’s the bread itself.
As much as I love sourdough, the crust is already too damn hard. Toasting never ends up in a happy experience. Rye or black bread is also another favourite, but only if it’s fresh. Simple multigrain bread toasted works out pretty nicely though.
How much toast do you have in a week? What do you put on it, and what kind of bread do you like to toast? Let us know in the comments!

Simplicity is best: Oodles of real butter on thick cut cafe style white with vegemite. Bliss.
Or, for the fancier side of things, perhaps some crusty sourdough supporting a spread of eggs benny and smoked salmon. Droooooooooooooooooooool

I eat two pieces with vegemite almost every morning. I prefer cereal but for various health reasons, it’s toast.
Whenever I need a quick meal I slap a Tim of tuna between two slices & toast it. Not terrible.
Anyway, toast is more of a necessity than a special occasion to me.
I like it ok.
Slice of toasted wholegrain, covered in scrambled eggs cooked with cheddar and diced chorizo, topped with ground ghost pepper.
I have the odd bit of wholemeal with 100% peanut butter. Also partial to a bit of wholemeal with butter and Vegemite every now and then.
Don’t get me started on grilled sandwiches though. I could talk for a while on that subject 🙂
My work provides free cereal and toast for breakfasts, and every morning I think “I should have some cereal for variety”… Then I go and make myself some toast. Thick-cut texas toast, half with Vegemite and real butter (none of that nasty margarine), half with peanut butter. Yum.
Don’t really eat bread these days but I had some Turkish Bread toasted few months back in Southbank and it was the nicest bread/toast I’ve ever eaten, lots of butter and some Jam ??
Fresh home-made NY style chewy bagels with lox is my favourite.
I have a recipe somewhere for a kind of rye sourdough that is flavoured with anise seeds and honey. Pairs beautifully with a tuna nicoise style dip.
Also an oldie but a goodie, open face grilled cheese sandwiches with oodles of butter. Best paired with a soup
Turkish toast. Melted butter pooling in the furrows and craters in the toast. Vegemite.
How good is toast??
Quick brekky: Toast + Peanut butter.
Quick Lunch: Toast + lettuce, cheese and some sort of meat and sauce (ham and mayo my preferred)
Quick Dinner: Super crunchy Toast + soup to dip it in
Long Brekky: Toast + eggs + whatever you enjoy with it (including bacon. Must have bacon. If you don’t want a house, feel free to add avacado).
Long Lunch: Toast + small steak cooked well, cut up into thin pieces, with a nice dollop of seeded mustard and some fresh green leaves – rocket works well.
Long Dinner: Croutons (which let’s face it is cut up toast, if you put all the croutons back together any sane person would call it toast) + a nice Ceasar Salad.
Seriously. Toast is literally the best thing since sliced bread.
No one has mentioned a thick layer of Avocado on toast.
Children, I am disappoint.
I’m a millenial, we’re not allowed that until we’ve bought a house
That’s not how you spell crumpets.
you people are the worst, why ruin a perfectly good piece of bread by burning it?
That was always my grandfather’s argument. Though it was more about drying it out.
Toast is magic.
Stale bread is to dry to enjoy, but if you toast it (i.e. dry it out even more) it becomes great again.
Toaster: Howdy doodly do. How’s it going? I’m Talkie, Talkie Toaster, your chirpy breakfast companion. Talkie’s the name, toasting’s the game. Anyone like any toast?
Lister: Look, I don’t want any toast, and he doesn’t want any toast. In fact, no one around here wants any toast. Not now, not ever. No toast.
Toaster: How ’bout a muffin?
Lister: Or muffins. Or muffins. We don’t like muffins around here. We want no muffins, no toast, no teacakes, no buns, baps, baguettes or bagels, no croissants, no crumpets, no pancakes, no potato cakes and no hot-cross buns and definitely no smegging flapjacks.
Toaster: Aah, so you’re a waffle man.
I’m a big fruit toast guy. Just some margarine on top and I’m good. Can live on that shit, and indeed one week I think I did.
My post-parkrun cafe does Sonoma Apple and Currant sourdough toast. All it needs is butter and it’s just heavenly.
Toast + honey = bliss
(To be fair, putting honey on most things makes them better. Honey is the best.)
Toast with Peanut Butter and a good drizzle of honey
Toast with honey covered with 3 slices of tasty block cheese. Also toast with a mix of cinnamon and sugar. Makes it taste like a doughnut. Mmmmm
Toast is bread’s bastardized, highly forgettable sibling.
The less said about it, the better.
the butter*
Definitely an Australian tradition. As an immigrant I can see a place and a time for toast (such as beneath scrambled eggs) but for my daily companion to my morning coffee there’s no replacement for fresh, fluffy and soft bread as it was created. No need to make it into a dry, hard, charred husk.
Soft white sourdough toast, thick cut, with melted butter and strawberry jam.
