So we know what 21 games will ship on the Super Nintendo Classic, including the surprise announcement of Star Fox 2. But for all of the games that the system ships with, Nintendo could have included so much more. Here’s 10 games from the company’s enormous back catalogue that belong on Nintendo’s latest retro console.
Super International Cricket
It’s a game that probably only makes sense in Australia and New Zealand, but what a game. Still one of the best cricket games of all time.
Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament
While Nintendo did everyone a solid by including the beloved F-ZERO on the system, the console is in dire need of another multiplayer arcade racer that isn’t Mario Kart. You know, something that isn’t beset with bullshit blue shells.
Something like Micro Machines 2.
Harvest Moon
Absolute missed opportunity here, especially given how big Stardew Valley has been over the last couple of years. And yes, I know that Stardew is coming to the Switch. Still, it would have been nice to see Nintendo include it on the console. It would have made a lot more sense than, oh I don’t know, picking two Kirby games.
Super Mario All-Stars
I’m with Mark on this one. Too good not to include, even if it meant buggering Final Fantasy 3 off or Yoshi’s Island. Fuck Yoshi.
Super Bomberman
They brought out a Bomberman sequel to launch the Switch, but didn’t have a Bomberman for the SNES Classic. Unbelievable.
Chrono Trigger
Would have picked this over Secret of Mana, to be honest.
Mortal Kombat (1, 2, or Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3)
Might have been a family friendly issue, although I’m sure Ed Boon would have been entirely happy to work with Nintendo on this one. Either way, that’s a big chunk of people’s childhoods that was missed.
NBA Jam: Tournament Edition
The mobile port is admirable, but it’s no Tournament Edition on the SNES.
Super Puyo Puyo
There’s no Tetris or Battle Tetris game at all, which seems an absolute shame. I mean, sure, playing wacky golf with Kirby is fun, but it’s no Puyo Puyo.
Pilotwings
When you have a collection of games you need to have one or two things that are just … fundamentally different. And while hoping for the SNES port of Wing Commander would be a stretch and a half, something like Pilotwings would have been really neat to see. But hey, Nintendo. You do you.
So those are ten games that I really wish the SNES Classic would be shipping with. Not that it stopped me pre-ordering one anyway. Speaking of which, anyone else a little disappointed that there’s only 21 games to begin with? SNES ROMs aren’t that massive, surely.
What games would you liked to see on the SNES Classic?

Micro Machines 2 was epic on the megadrive due to the extra controller ports.
It had an eight player mode, and there was one time i actually got that many people together.
It was epic.
So epic, you had to squeeze two players on one controller! Good times!
No Unirally? You’re dead to me, Alex.
Haha, yes, I remember Unirally! One of the best 2 player games ever.
I called it uniracer but yes. That should have been on there.
My first reaction.
Also no Stunt Race FX 🙁
I actually think Nintendo got it about right.
I agree with Super International Cricket, that game was awesome. I also would have loved to see Super Tennis, gee that was fun.
But there was a trick with it, if you shuffled across and whipped it off your legs you were guaranteed a 4 or 6.
Classic trick.
The counter was to put a fielder right on the fence on the leg side. Neutralised it for the most part (from memory).
Yep. The computer AI would wise up after a couple of overs, after that you can slog it with straight off drives, keeping an eye on field changes all the time.
I’m happy enough with the list we are getting. It would have been nice to see other games like Bubsy, Rock ‘n Roll Racing, Unirally and Turtles in Time. I guess with some games there might be licensing issues so I wasn’t expexting a turtles games since we didn’t get one on the NES Classic.
I second and triple the request for Rock ‘n Roll Racing and Turtles in Time.
Both Bubsy games would have been nice.
I would put Flashback on that list for sure, especially when you look at how terrible the remake that came out a few years ago was (“Awesome sauce”). Even the straight port of the old version was really sloppy.
So incredibly disappointing that remake was. Flashback is one of my great childhood memories.
Errrr…you’ve forgotten (just like Nintendo has) Donkey Kong Country 2. One of the best games on the SNES.
The Lost Vikings
Battletoads
Smash TV
Afterburner
Super Star Wars
Doesn’t one of the Mini Sega type things get Battletoads? I feel like there’s a licensing reason there..
Rare, now owned by Microsoft. Might have something to do with it.
Rock n Roll Racing and Shadowrun = childhood complete
PC versions of both Lost Vikings and Rock Roll Racing are free to download from Blizzard (under other games in Blizzards account settings)
Have them both – and Blackthorne.
But it’s a good reminder Dirtyshado!!
Aww shit, you just reminded me about blackthorne.
Goodbye productivity!
Wasn’t the PC Rock’n’Roll Racing stripped of some of its music because of licence expiry, though? I thought I heard something about that back when they released it three years ago (boy does time fly).
Metal Warriors was one of my favourites
Every game they put on the NES Mini… cause I tried and gave up trying to get my hands on it without paying grey market scalpers.
Might be time to go Raspberry Pi and 3D printing
TMNT IV – TURTLES IN TIME. One of the best beat em ups in it’s era, if not of all time.
Chrono Trigger IMO is the most glaring omission. I would have replaced Earthbound with Chrono Trigger personally.
Others I’m baffled didn’t make the cut:
Mortal Kombat II
Killer Instinct
The Lost Vikings (1 and 2)
Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3
Soul Blazer
Illusion of Time/Gaia
Terranigma
Tetris Attack
Seiken Densetsu 3 (would have been a perfect opportunity to finally officially localise it)
Castlevania Dracula X
Unirally
Super Bomberman 3 or 5 (they were both great, pick one)
TMNT: Turtles in Time
Smash TV
Micro Machines
Revolution X
Lufia 1 and 2
Just to name a few…
I actually disagree on including Super Mario All-Stars though. We already got the original versions of those games (sans Lost Levels) on the Classic NES so I wouldn’t have liked a slot on this taken up with those games again, remastered or not.
Killer instinct is owned by microsoft. It would never be included.
Here’s hoping that the game slot is not just for show, and they’ll sell an expansion cartridge holding an additional 20 games.
Would be a genius idea.
Even without cartridges, if they had the Nintendo Store built into the device then you could release packs or individual games periodically. I’d be happy to pay for a version with that functionality (would require having wifi built in)
Would have loved to see Turtles in Time and Battletoads in Battlemaniacs.
Been mentioned already but loved these as a kid. Regardless I got my preorder in at EB this morning.
It’s kinda covered by Contra but I spent big chunks of my time playing Super Probotector – would’ve loved to see that there
It’s not enough we get piles of remasters on current gen systems, you want a collection of remasters on the SNES Classic too? Let’s just stick to SNES games shall we…
I’m most happy that Kirby’s Dream Course is included on the “approved” list, never in a million years would I have thought that had a chance. Very cool.
Not including Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a crime against humanity.
yeeeeesssssssh!
PTSD of multiple Chainsaw maniacs hunting me down on level 10.
I would like
Donkey Kong Country 2
Illusion of Time
Jurassic Park
Stunt Race FX
TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
The snes mini has secret of mana so I’m set.
If I had to add any it would be these
super bomberman,
chrono trigger,
rock and roll racing,
goof troop,
TMNT: Turtles in Time
zombies ate my babysitter
smash tv
lost vikings
flash back
Another world
Super Tennis.
And just moar games overall.
Yeah chrono trigger was the biggest miss there and maybe harvest moon hopefully people will find a way to add more games in the same way they did for the mini NES
Personally, needs Act Raiser (1 and 2). Also agree with others on Harvest Moon, Chrono Trigger, The Lost Vikings. There’s also Blackthorne I would have loved to see.
And let’s not forget Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.
I prefer Secret of Mana over Chrono Trigger, but would rather both 😛
Viewing the list of games and not seeing Chrono Trigger actually caused a sharp pain in my heart. At least they included FFVI.
But the line-up is still worth the money IMHO, will be pre-ordering when I got home.
Chrono Trigger, illusion of Time, Secret of Evermore, Breath of Fire 2, Rock n Roll Racing, Mario Allstars and DKC2 and 3 would’ve been great. But the ones they chose were no slouch. I am so going to own my gf at Mario Kart 😀
Relax and wait for the jailbreak. It didn’t take to long for the news mini’s.
I agree with most of these.
Cybernator was my jam on the SNES and I wish it was on here, but I’m happy with what it comes with
Easily the greatest thing about this….is that i have managed to secure one already!!
Hallelujah and i salute the nintendo gods above in the sky!! Im excited.
skyrim
PLOK!!!!
Terranigma, Actraiser, Lufia, Breath of Fire… Could do with Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales of Phantasia. Ys V, Bahamut Lagoon and Star Ocean as well, but none of them were ever officially localized.
I also wish it had TMNT4: Turtles in Time in the lineup. Still one of the best examples of that genre.
Ok I don’t get the fawning over this thing. I figured people would be outraged. They completely screw the pooch on the NES classic with only 30 games out of hundreds when it has been shown that the thing has the memory capacity to hold almost the entire catalog (yes, I know, licencing BS) and they didn’t make enough or make it for long enough.
This thing costs more and has 10 games less from a system that AFAICT had more games available. This right off the bat isn’t good.
Maybe they will fix this. Maybe this one will be hackable too. I’m not holding my breath though.
I agree on:
– Super International Cricket
– Micro Machines 2
– Super Mario All-Stars (Best Mario to date)
– Chrono Trigger (No other justification needed)
– Mortal Kombat 2 (Last MK I truly enjoyed)
– NBA Jam (DAMN I loved this game)
Others I would have loved to see included:
– Donkey Kong Country 2
– Wing Commander
– Street Fighter 2
– Shadowrun
– Killer Instinct
– Clay Fighters
– TMNT: Turtles in Time
Either way, I have my pre-order in and am on the hypetrain, TOOT TOOT!!!!!
Mighty morphin power rangers??? That game was one of the best ones…wish they included it on the list.
