Metal Gear Survive is wreckage of the long battle between the series' lead creator, Hideo Kojima, and Konami, his long-time employer who ditched him three years ago. Kojima split with Konami after a lifetime of making Metal Gear games, going back to the first in 1987. Survive is Konami's attempt to make a new one without him. It's a bad game that's more fascinating than I expected.

Things didn't exactly end on a good note between Hideo Kojima and Konami. That doesn't mean Konami is without those who still care about the legacy of the Metal Gear creator's old studio.
The Metal Gear series' future was uncertain after creator Hideo Kojima left Konami. Metal Gear Survive tosses away stealth and politics in favour of zombies and loot. I've played about five hours of the game and so far, while it captures the feeling of braving the wilderness, it's also a slow grind.
If you don't have a virtual reality headset the next best thing, of course, is to steal one from well-off friend. For the less kleptomaniac among us, there's YouTube, where the likes of SweViver are happy to romp around shooters of old -- in this case, DOOM 3 BFG Edition -- taking out demon-possessed zombies in the confines of an experimental facility on Mars...
During the Tokyo Game Show, Hideo Kojima was asked about Metal Gear Survive. He wasn't rude per se, but honest. Official footage of the incident, however, seems to be vanishing, causing all sorts of wild speculation on major Japanese game sites.
Konami sure is trying. Gotta give them that. But if YouTube likes are any indication, loads of people aren't feeling Metal Gear Survive.
Hideo Kojima may have left Konami, but that doesn’t mean the end of Metal Gear. Or, potentially, Metal Gear’s reanimated corpse. Last week at Gamescom, Konami showed its willingness to take it into unexpected places. Metal Gear Survive abandons the cinematic, single-player focus of the previous games, twisting the series into a 4-player co-op stealth action game.
Konami is withholding the details of Metal Gear Survive but, between the trailer and an interview with one of the company’s community managers at Gamescom, I’ve put together a picture of what the game actually is.

Konami isn't going to let the loss of Hideo Kojima stop them from using the Metal Gear licence, announcing today an all-new game in the franchise: Metal Gear Survive.
