Pyramid Head is the long-running scary sexual terror monster from the Silent Hill franchise. Metal Gear Survive is a zombie game created from the bones of the Metal Gear universe. What better way to unite these two titan franchises than by putting Pyramid Head in Metal Gear Survive?


Metal Gear Survive is wreckage of the long battle between the series' lead creator, Hideo Kojima, and Konami, his long-time employer who ditched him three years ago. Kojima split with Konami after a lifetime of making Metal Gear games, going back to the first in 1987. Survive is Konami's attempt to make a new one without him. It's a bad game that's more fascinating than I expected.


If you don't have a virtual reality headset the next best thing, of course, is to steal one from well-off friend. For the less kleptomaniac among us, there's YouTube, where the likes of SweViver are happy to romp around shooters of old -- in this case, DOOM 3 BFG Edition -- taking out demon-possessed zombies in the confines of an experimental facility on Mars...


Hideo Kojima may have left Konami, but that doesn’t mean the end of Metal Gear. Or, potentially, Metal Gear’s reanimated corpse. Last week at Gamescom, Konami showed its willingness to take it into unexpected places. Metal Gear Survive abandons the cinematic, single-player focus of the previous games, twisting the series into a 4-player co-op stealth action game.

Konami is withholding the details of Metal Gear Survive but, between the trailer and an interview with one of the company’s community managers at Gamescom, I’ve put together a picture of what the game actually is.
