Rumour: Red Ant Closing Up Shop?

fallout 3 jericho.jpg

We’ve received word from several sources this morning that Australian games and DVD distributor Red Ant has gone bust and fallen into receivership. If this rumour is true, it may throw the future of local releases from Capcom, Bethesda, Konami and Midway into doubt, as Red Ant currently has distribution agreements with all four publishers. Given Capcom’s upcoming release slate – Street Fighter IV, Bionic Commando, Resident Evil 5 are all due before the end of March – that’s an especially worrying prospect. We’ve contacted Red Ant for comment and will update as soon as we hear anything further.

An ASIC search of Red Ant Enterprises confirms they are in receivership.

More people out of work – what a crappy time we are in right now.

It is really sad to see so many Aussie companies go under now :(

Looks like the ASIC site confirms it

Oh boy, I hope this is just a rumour.

    Please don’t, I require SFIV.

As for the games releases, I can’t imagine there should be too much of a problem. I am pretty sure the distribution agreements would include a clause which said they automatically come to an end upon one of the parties entering into receivership.

Capcom etc should have time to find a new distributor to get the games out the door – they will be as keen for our dollars as we are keen for their games.

Oh wow, maybe this is why I haven’t heard a reply from them yet!

I met a few of the Red Ant guys last November, hey if you hear from them let me know!

I hope it works out for them, they’re good guys.

CAPCOM should have no problems getting their wares out here.

How is this possible? I’m reading articles about the games industry outperforming box office and dvd sales and any Australian gamer will tell you the mark-up on our games is ridiculous. What gives?
