PlanetSide, the game that brought the MMO FPS to the masses, will go dark indefinitely come the end of the month. After going free-to-play a couple of years ago, developer Daybreak has decided to, uh, call it a day on the 13-year old title.

With PlanetSide 2 well and truly established and what I can only imagine is an unprofitably small player base, Daybreak announced yesterday that the last PlanetSide server would be shut down come 4pm PDT on July 1 (around 9am on July 2 AEST).
There’s not much to the official news post, though Daybreak does mention that “evolving business needs and technical requirements” were behind the decision and it hopes players will “take this opportunity to enjoy the remaining time available” and give the game “the sendoff it deserves”.
For those having trouble letting go, it looks like there’s a community effort to keep the game going after its official demise. The project is called PSForever, if you’re keen.
