Flight Control Is Best Aussie-Made Game Of 2009

flight control picAt the Game Developer’s Association of Australia Industry Awards last night, Melbourne’s Firemint took home the gong for Best Game for their iPhone release Flight Control.

Flight Control, which uses the touchscreen to enable the player to draw flight paths at an increasingly congested airport, has been a huge hit for Firemint this year and remains one of the best-selling games on the iPhone’s app store.

“Congratulations to Firemint on their success at the 2009 GDAA Industry Awards. Flight Control has been a phenomenal success and has really been responsible for the creation of an entire new genre on iPhone. We’re very proud that this title was developed in Australia,” said Tom Crago, President of the Game Developers’ Association of Australia.

The other major awards saw the now-defunct Transmission Games scoop Best Console Title for Heroes Over Europe and Infinite Interactive take Best PC Title and Best Handheld Title for Puzzle Quest: Galactrix.

  • Firemint is really quite good at iphone apps, Real Racing is also one of the best games on iphone

But that said Flight Control is pure crack. You just can’t stop playing it

    • I had to leave early so didn’t see this for myself but I heard that Flight Control and Real Racing were the only two contenders for Best Mobile Title. RR is a fantastic game but FC was so innovative that it deserved to win.

And as much as it would’ve been great if Galactrix had won Best Game (okay, I’m biased ;), Flight Control certainly would’ve been my pick otherwise. Congrats to the guys (and probably gals) at Firemint on two excellent products and some well deserved awards.

  • Sad state of affairs for the Australian game industry when a bad, bad game like Heroes Over Europe picks up three out of twelve awards :\
