Years In Development, This PS3 Game Still Lives. Well, Apparently.

Back in 2005 (2005!), Koei revealed Ni-Oh! for PS3. The game was supposed to be based on an unearthed script from Akira Kurosawa (Yojimbo, Seven Samurai). But it was never released. Ni-Oh! just…vanished.

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Tecmo president and co-founder Yoichi Erikawa confirmed that the game still existed. “We just finished the alpha version of the game,” said Erikawa, adding that work on it “is continuing steadily.”

Slated for the PS3 (eventually), Ni-Oh! follows the journey of a half-Japanese, blond-haired samurai in 16th century Japan. There was supposed to a movie version that tied into the game, but that was apparently canned.

Back in 2009, Koei apologized for lack of updates about the game and said it was still working on the title. In 2010, Koei revealed that Team Ninja of Ninja Gaiden fame would be developing it. And in 2012, Koei stated that the game just cleared its alpha version. Progress!

  • =o.
Sitting here staring at my well worn Akira Kurosawa boxed set videos I get a little excited chill about this game.
If they are taking so long to complete it, it means that it’s going to be good, yeah?
Shut up! Just agree with me and walk away slowly and nobody gets hurt! 😛

  • I love Kurosawa’s work. I can’t stress that enough… *winces*…
BUT Uwe Boll could take a ‘lost script’ supposedly written by him and make the worst movie of the century out of it, right? So I’m not going to allow myself to assume this will be great.

‘Somebody using Kurosawa’s name to promote an actiony-slashy Team Ninja game’ is not the same thing as ‘something new from Kurosawa’ or even ‘anything that should occupy the same shelf as Kurosawa’s films’…

So while, yes, that sounds pretty damned interesting to me, I’m not expecting much from the game. That way if it’s halfway decent I can be pleasantly surprised. Meanwhile I can sit and just let my imagination play with the idea of a Kurosawa film starring a bleached-blonde Toshiro Mifune.

  • Isn’t it now Ninja Gaiden infamy after the piece of shit NG3 was?
I really hope they don’t screw this one up since I’m a Kurosawa enthusiast myself.
