Well, Of Course Germans Would Make A Cool Vietnam Game

You'd think with all the vintage rock and classic films and iconic imagery that Vietnam would be the easiest war to if not make a decent video game out of, then at least capture the essence of the conflict.

But nope. We've had the godawful pastiche that was Black Ops' attempt. Battlefield tried, but Vietnam rivals 2142 for "most forgotten" game in that hallowed series. The less we say about games like Shellshock the better.

Yet here, out of nowhere, comes a Crysis mod, made by Germans, that looks fantastic. It appears to be only a single mission — and in German, which given the setting is weird — but whatever, that music, that foliage and that lighting looks perfect. If only they hadn't skimped on a few of the models, and actually made Jeeps instead of just re-skinning Hummvees.

Having been in development for ages now, Vietcry is now available for download.

I was basically going to say that it has a Far Cry kind of feel then I saw the title, awesome stuff. Looks like they have a few bugs, especially that I could see with the running animation but it looks awesome, I'll play it and maybe I'll pick up a few German phrases.

THAT'S the "essence of the conflict"? For some reason my expectations were a little higher than music and a one-man army.

Vietcong was/is the definitive game on the subject, even if it's almost 10yrs old. Nothing else has come close. Such a shame Pterodon dropped the ball massively with Vietcong 2 though... :(

I'd love to see a return to the early '00s trend of historic shooters, before they went all Michael Bayish after Call of Duty 4. I think we still need to wait a while before revisiting WW2, but I would play the hell out of a WW1, US Civil War, Western, Vietnam, or even Korean War (why hasn't anybody done this??) shooter done well, with all of the modern improvements to controls, like ironsights and one button melees and grenades, but without all of the unnecessary extras and unlocks and explosions of recent games. Hell, since nobody is playing CoD4 any more, I'd even take another game like that set in modern times too.

I've always thought they would be interesting times for an FPS but thinking of the technical details would you really want a game that took 3 minutes to reload a flintlock rifle :)
