Shigeru Miyamoto Is Not Too Worried About The Wii U Just Yet

Even though the sales for the Wii U have been less then stellar — with Nintendo actually expecting to lose money — Shigeru Miyamoto believes there is no cause for concern.

In an interview with the New York Times, when asked about the Wii U's performance, Mr Miyamoto seemed optimistic. "I think that the Wii U still has a long future," he said. "We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch."

Mr Miyamoto also said that while the Wii U's sales are indeed lacking, he certainly doesn't think the console's doomed to fail. "Certainly in the short term I would want to see it performing with probably a little more momentum. I think in the long term I'm not at a point where I'm concerned yet."

Sales are slow, no doubt, and that's worrying. But, the system does have several heavy-hitting titles on the way, including Rayman Legends, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and the Wind Waker remake. The Wii U's future might not be so bleak after all — we'll just have to wait and see.

A Word With: Shigeru Miyamoto - Divining What's Next for Video Games [New York Times]

Of course he's not worried. At the end of the day, he'll still have his job at Nintendo and his millions of dollars.
Maybe the console isn't going to be a failure financially for Nintendo, but in comparison to the market, its a right shitbox.

Really? do you even own one? its the best console by far.

Obviously it has very little game titles but that will all come.

I did but I got a refund. It just a HD/3D compatible Wii IMHO
I might buy one again when there is something worth playing but for now, meh!
Def NOT the best console.. or even the 2nd best. Hell the 3DS is better atm
Give it another and it might have a few games worth playing

Also, I didn't even take it back because of the games. I got a seriously faulty unit with ridiculous wait times after performing any action and it wouldn't synch my controllers >_<
By the time I took it back I wanted the money instead. I'll try again in a year

Well i guess that its a matter of opinion, because i think it is the best. 3DS is a handhell so it doesn't count ;) and how can you not be sick of the PS3 (which sucks anyway) and the 360? they are 6 years old. I don't think i still use anything that's that old, except my car. The PS4 looks shocking, may as well buy a pc and plug a control in. Consoles are not really about power.

It does sound like you got a dud though haha. Mine has had zero issues.

Don't get me wrong dude, i'll probably buy a new one soon. :)
Especially with a few games I really want coming out. I don't want it to fail. Just the launch was a bit weak for me and I obviously got one that had been dropped a few times or something lol

                haha yeah totally understand that.

And i think my PS4 comment was a little harsh. Its actually looking pretty good now 4 months on from my last post

Miyamoto has a pretty average salary (at least for a board member), and actively refuses a higher salary.

you seem to have confused Miyamoto with a western company's executive.

The Wind Waker remake will bring in sales.

Sadly as a Zelda fanatic, and as some others are, I can completely justify buying a new console for a remade title.

Hell, I did with the 3DS for OoT.... of course Miyamoto/Nintendo isn't worried!

MH3U and Lego City will give it a big boost this month, and Pikmin 3 is around the corner. I can understand why Miyamoto isn't worried.

Still, the launch window was pretty terrible, and it doesn't help that it lost 2 exclusives with one also being delayed until September "just because". Thankfully there's at least CoD to play on it, which is surprisingly the best version out there. Off-screen play, no annoying kids with mics and no terrible netcode make it shit on all over the other versions.

Plus when a new Smash Bros/Mario Kart/LOZ game finally launches they will make some coin. Add to that there is bound to be a new Mario game at some point and a Pokemon tie in somewhere too.

I love my WiiU, but there's no doubt this most likely won't be one of their better selling consoles.

I'm thinking just over Nintendo 64 like sales. Which is still ok I think. Would put it around 40 million lifetime.

Hope to be wrong though. Nintendo just needs to get the real big guns out. Zelda, Metroid and a new Mario. Also, if they release Pokemon RPG on it, with 3DS connectivity. Game over.

The reason they are not worried is because they basically have every one of their big franchises in their pocket to come and those are the games that have always driven their sales. It's a moot point until they drop a mario kart, a galaxy successor, a new zelda, a new smash bros etc

Possibly, them not releasing any of that is indicative of their desire to use their top franchises against the new consoles that are coming.

In reality, at this stage, with the fumes they are running on on that console - it's really not that bad. So many cards up their sleeve, still to come.

So forget this stupid conjecture about how he's rich and he doesn't care (foolish commentary) - it's not about that. Console aside, they essentially have EVERYTHING that makes nintendo nintendo to come. That's why they are not worried. I know most people reading this have a hook in their mind - "When game X comes out, I will think about getting the Wii U". They know that too.

I do feel sorry for the err.. early adopters but releasing the Wii U now was a smart idea. It would get lost in the crowd if it were closer to the other consoles.

It's a dust collector at the moment but when I was playing it with Mario, Sonic Racing and ZombiU I was having a blast.

Just gotta wait for those new games so I have a reason to turn it on again.

They need to pull their finger out. Even getting caned by the Vita at the moment, and we all know how that's doing.

Duh, Vita SHOULD be beating the Wii U. Its over a year old and already has a bigger library. Your comparing it to a console that has been out for only 3 months. Of course Nintendo need to get a move on but its hardly panic stations. The games are coming. Just look at past console sales. Ps3, 360 and even Vita had poor first years (vita around 4 million and ps3 and 360 around 5.7 million in their first years) followed by better second years when more software hits.

The Wii U will pick up steam quickly and maintain a strong lead this gen. Just need to keep the steady flow of games till December and the explosion of games next year to keep the Wii U on top.

    Xenoblade 2 = immediate purchase.

Wait until all the old IPs turn up again on it, with a controller that they can actually play them on (until the Wii).

When the new SSB comes out, oh lordy.

I have a Wii U myself and, I must say, I really like it. It's problem was that it just didn't have any good launch titles.

“We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch.”

Really? did they install a Blu-ray player or something while I was sleeping? My family doesn't tend to gather around to watch Super Mario Bros.

Why not? 4 player Mario is awesome fun.

all he has to do is not release jack shit until zelda comes out and it will make its earnings ten times over

Zelda Wind Waker, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Pikmen, Super Smash Bros, Zelda Wii U, Monster Hunter = massive sales. As for calling it a 3D/HD Wii, Halo 3 was really Halo 2.5 yet it sold million. Assassins Creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations all similar, still millions sold, all good games. The PS3 was really only a HD PS2 and it had become a great console, as I play my PS3 alot. To write off the Wii U 5+ months old is just typical nit picking, when only Nintendo has the largest FP titles that millions of people play, and that you can only play on a Nintendo. Nintendo is not for everyone then so isn't Toyota, yet that is still the best selling car company.

“We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch.”
I've been hearing this a lot lately. From every single console and micro-computer company.
