I’ve complained before (even put a question to Mark before in ‘Ask me stuff’) that Nintendo’s pricing scheme is terrible. People say that they make “cheaper” consoles but the software prices are exorbitant and remain so far longer than other systems.
Seriously think of the quality of the games you can get on Xbox Live Arcade or the Playstation store for $10. I know it’s not the best game, but I got a copy of Resident Evil 6 for $9.99 on XBL a few weeks back. It’s over 10gb, less than a year old and is only available on modern gaming consoles/ newish PC’s.
Have a look how much a copy of Mario Kart Wii is at your local store, that game is 5 years old and is still really hard to get for less than $50 and often still full retail. If that game is a Halo or an Uncharted it’s being sold for under $20 by now.
How can Nintendo charge $6.99 for a <5mb Gameboy game when people can download 1000’s of much new games off the iPhone store for <99c?

Super Mario World is a game with tons of secrets to find, there’s hours of gameplay in there and it’s an absolute classic.
The thing that gets me is that it’s over 20 years old and has no improvements beyond save states (which regular emulators provide with more functionality) and off screen play (tethered to the console). There’s no improved graphics (not even that smudgy effect XBL/PSN can do to old 2D sprite games), no achievements, no improved anything.
You’re paying $10 for a 20 year old ROM. It’s nice that there’s a legal option for purchasing these old games but I think $3 is a more reasonable price.

$3 is way reasonable and if $100 got me a boat load of nostalgia games then I would definitely see the worth of shelling out. At $10 a pop, no thanks… my pockets aren’t that deep, I’ll stick to ZSNES if I get the itch.

I’m not for a second doubting the quality of any of Nintendo’s games.
They make great software (which is why I’ve downloaded quite a few of these overpriced ROMS), but still the pricing system they have is ridiculous.I don’t have a problem with encouraging people to pirate old Nintendo software if the only way they make them available legally leaves their 20+ year old games costing more than a multi-million dollar current generation game which came out last year. It’s extortionate.
A straight port of a N64 game costs $3 more on the Nintendo Shop than the fully remodelled, 60fps, online enabled, HD re-release of Perfect Dark which is on Xbox live.
