There’s A Macross Game On The Oculus Rift

When I was a kid, I had a poster of an F-14 Tomcat hanging on my wall. It was my favourite aeroplane. Then I watched Robotech and saw my favourite plane transform into a giant robot as well. I dreamed about flying one. Now, two decades later, Oculus Rift has helped me get as close to this dream as I’ll likely ever get.

Macross + Oculus Rift is a fan-made flight simulator for the Oculus Rift using the unity game engine. In it you fly around in a VF-11 transformable fighter and shoot down unmanned drones in the sky high above a city. It’s not much of a game — more of a proof-of-concept demo really — but it does adequately convey the feeling of flying in a plane that can turn into a giant robot on demand.

And if you don’t have your own Oculus Rift to try it out on, SolidM (the creator of Macross + Oculus Rift), has a score of non-3D in-browser levels for you to play on your PC over at his homepage (Japanese) as well — like this one, for example.
