John Carmack On PS4 Vs Xbox One Specs: They’re ‘Very Close’

At the start of his QuakeCon keynote, legendary tech-whiz John Carmack offered some observations about the biggest two contenders in the coming console wars. You can watch the clip from Carmack’s keynote here.

While he says he hasn’t done enough benchmarking to be able to do a straight-up comparison between the PS4 and Xbox One, Carmack says that they’re “very close” and that “they’re both very good”.

Carmack then discussed why he’s not quite sold on the Kinect motion controller, even while he thinks it’s a technology that’s set to grow and improve. He summed up Kinect thusly: Saying that he’s given Apple grief for its one-button mouse, Carmack describes Kinect as “kind of like a zero-button mouse with a lot of latency on it”.

  • Truer words have never been spoken, this is also what frustrates me as a gamer. There’s not a whole lot of skill or precision to kinect games, sure I suppose its a nice feature for say a dance game, but lets be honest here.

Most people who are buying a games console are buying them for FPS’ and RPG’s… Not for dancing.

  • The only major reasoning you should consider for deciding which console to buy is:
    1. The games
    2. What the majority of your friends will be getting

All these specs/controller/kinect/OS arguments are honestly pretty petty. They’re both great consoles that will be sure to entertain the masses for many years to come. I plan on purchasing a ps4 primarily to continue playing the series of games only available on Playstation.. If majority of my friends get an Xbox then I would have no issue jumping consoles. I’d much rather play games with my mates than buy a console for minute differences in specs.
    Just my 2c
