I could think of worse ways to spend my time.
Post-mortems are among my favourite talks at GDC. I think that’s because I have very little idea of how to make video games, but I love to hear old developers discuss how they made some of my favourites. Today in the GDC Vault they’re playing a one hour post mortem on the Lucasfilm classic Maniac Mansion by Ron Gilbert. As a huge fan of old school graphic adventures — and an even bigger fan of Ron Gilbert graphic adventures — this is about as good as it gets.
Maniac Mansion was just such an important video game. The SCUMM engine that was used in almost every Lucasarts/Lucasfilm adventure ever made. So I think if I have a spare 56 minutes at some point during the day, I’ll be sitting down to watch this.
You can watch it here.

This was the first adventure game I ever played. It left an impression.
This isn’t new, and is VERY interesting. If you get the chance, definitely watch it, especially if you played it when it was New and Shiny. There is a lot in there, including the things they had to censor and complaints they got for the game. One of the best games ever made, and this was a great presentation on it!
