The Eight Games You'd Bring To A Desert Island

Hypothetical situation. You're about to be sent to a deserted island, where you'll be stranded, cut off from all human contact for the rest of your life. What eight games do you bring?

That's the premise for the Final Games podcast, a show by freelancer Liam Edwards that brings on various guests from throughout the world of video games and asks them to talk about the games that mean the most to them.

Edwards was kind enough to invite me on the show last week. You can listen to my episode right here:

For reference — or in case you don't have time to listen to the whole thing — here's my full list. I tried to put together a mix of games that mean the most to me and games that I won't mind replaying over and over again:

  1. Suikoden II
  2. Final Fantasy VI
  3. The Last of Us
  4. Baldur's Gate II
  5. Zelda: Link's Awakening
  6. Final Fantasy Tactics
  7. Sid Meier's Colonization
  8. Starcraft II

What do you think? What would your list look like? Chime in!

1 - Latest Monster Hunter at the time
    2 - Final Fantasy Tactics A2
    3 - Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge
    4 - Fallout 2
5 - Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Academy
6 - Sword of the Stars
    7 - Medieval 2: Total War
8 - Curse of Monkey Island

    1. **Overwatch** Fire Emblem Fates
    2. Mirror's Edge
    3. Civilisation 5
    4. Blood Bowl
    5. Hatsune Miku Project Diva F 2nd
    6. Persona 4 Golden
    7. The Witcher 3
    8. Warhammer 40K Dawn of War

(LOL, I'm assuming there's high-speed internet on this desert island)

Edit... OK, OK, I'll swap out Overwatch for something else.

Solitaire, Especially if i want to get off the island as 9/10 someone will appear out of nowhere and tell me i should have moved that last card to this other spot.

Or correct your grammar... Should HAVE. :)

That too. 2 things in life are guaranteed a person saying where a solitaire card goes and a grammar nazi :P.

    1. World of Warcraft
    2. World of Warcraft
    3. World of Warcraft
    4. World of Warcraft
    5. World of Warcraft
    6. World of Warcraft
    7. World of Warcraft
    8. World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is a terrible game for being stranded on an island with no outside contact.

Any game made by blizzard in the last 10 years is pretty much useless without internet.

If we are assuming access to power, it's only fair to assume an internet connection too

So the phrase cut off from all human contact makes you think "Yeah, they probably mean id have the internet and be able to play an MMO with other people"

There are plenty of ways you can have power and be completely isolated including portable camping solar panels with batteries.

    Resident Evil 2
    Castlevania Symphony of the Night
    Final Fantasy VIII
Donkey Kong Country 2 Diddy's Kong Quest
    Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
Bust A Move 2 Arcade Edition (the PSX version...)
    Mario Kart DS
    Dragon Age Origins

I'd probably swap some out given the opportunity, top 6 wouldn't change

I just realised this article is about a podcast, ha ha! Nope.

    World of Warcraft
    Mario Kart 8
    Witcher 3
    GTA 5
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Day Z

    2. Biker Mice from Mars on the PS2
    3. Biker Mice from Mars on the DS
    4. Umm...

    Solitaire (with real cards)
    Volleyball (Willlllllson)
Fishing (fishing is a game isn't it?)
Archery (archery is a game too right?)

Assuming of course that it wasn't a true desert island and there was power and computers...
    Doom 3
    Warcraft 3
    Torchlight 2
    Unreal Tournament 2004
The last Need For Speed before it went all internet linked - Hot Pursuit wasn't it?
TOCA2 (I think that was the one with the Aussie Supercars added to it)
    Dawn of War Gold Edition
Spellforce collection (Spellforce 1&2 with xpacs)

Besides the gaming, there's lots of potential to keep busy with modding.

I feel like singleplayer only is the only way this list makes sense, otherwise you're not isolated at all.

    1. Mass Effect (Over 100 hours in it so far, still having fun)
    2. Half-Life (Same as above)
    3. Team Fortress 2 (jump maps etc. are still fun by yourself, if multiplayer were allowed it would top the list)
    4. Super Mario World
    5. Fire Emblem Awakening (Bloody hell there's so much content to these games even ignoring the gindy aspects)
    6. Gunpoint
    7. Metal Gear solid 3
    8. Deus Ex: Human revolution or Borderlands 2; I can't decide (DE:HR is more fun, B2 is bloody enormous).

This should probably keep me occupied for a while:
    1) Breath of Fire III
    2) Breath of Fire IV
    3) Suikoden 2
    4) Disgaea 3
    5) Starbound
    6) King of Fighters XIII
    7) Guilty Gear Xrd REVELATOR
    8) BlazBlue

We're also all assuming this desert island has mains power too............. but assumptions aside

    1. Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate
    2. EDF4
    3. Metal Gear Solid V
    4. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    5. Dark Souls

    I got carried away

Wooooo! Yay for Link's Awakening! All-time best Zelda game.

If I'm on an island and these are the only games I get then I'm going for games I can sink untold hours into, not necessarily my favourite games.

    - Arkham Asylum
    - Tekken 5
    - Chili Con Carnage
    - Momono Sweeper
    - Time Crisis 2
    - Burnout Paradise
    - Worms
    - And maybe I'd finally have the time and inclination to finally work out what Dwarf Fortress is

I'd only bring a deck of cards and play Solitaire.

Because sure as mustard, I'll be 15 minutes in before I get a tap on the shoulder with someone saying "You missed a move."

    Skyrim plus mods
    Grim dawn plus mods
    Civilization 5
    Witcher 3
Elder scrolls online if MMO is allowed as a selection

Not sure about the rest yet.

None, because if you were stranded on a desert island, you wouldn't have any electricity.

Maybe your plane went down and it was carrying a shipment of these:

    Cities skylines
    Crusader kings 2
    Fallout 4
    GTA 5
    Rome 2 total war
Some sports game - cricket, soccer or nfl

    Mods and addons are mandatory

    1.Final Fantasy IX
    2.Mechwarrior 2/GBL/M
    3.Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2
    4.Sins of a solar empire
    5.Wipeout Fury
    6.Pokemon Red
    7.State of Decay
    8.S.t.a.l.k.e.r Clear Sky

A couple of games that would only just miss out include CSGO, Battleforge Reborn, Carmageddon, Alpha Protocol and G-Police.

haha yeah Sins could definitely keep you occupied for a looong time

    1. The Witcher 3.
    2. Red Dead Redemption.
    3. Minecraft.
    4. Metal Gear Solid V.
    5. Grand Theft Auto V.
    6. Rocket League.
    7. Fallout 4.
    8. The Last of Us.

None, I will be too busy trying to survive

1 - SEGA Rally Championship (Saturn)
2 - TESV: Skyrim (PC) - mods to make it last longer
    3 - Wip3out: Special Edition (PSX)
    4 - Virtua Fighter 2 (Saturn)
    5 - Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (PC-Engine) - because I haven't finished it yet
    6 - SEGA Mega Drive Collection (Xbox 360) - cheating, because it's a compilation
7 - DOOM 3 Limited Collector's Edition (OG XBOX) - it comes with the first 2 DOOM games too
    8 - OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast (OG XBOX)

    1. quake 1
    2. far cry 1 (sandbox)
    3. unreal engine
    4. unity engine
    5. lumberyard.
    7. elite dangerous. for the space game
    8 rome total war 1
    9. roller coaster tycoon 2 or parkitect for the building game
10 asetto corsa for the driving game

and all the C++ and C# coding videos I could fit on computer

tried to pick offline games, different if online (wowcraft, wowships)
and I just realized I have 10... dont kill me.

Blender, Unity, Visual Studio, and Photoshop.
All the tools you need to make your own games. The downside is when you hit a bug and can't go to Stack Overflow to find the solution. I think that would drive me insane.
