I Tried These Weird New Cereals So You Don't Have To

If you’ve walked down the breakfast aisle of your local supermarket in the last few months you’re likely aware that some sort of bizarre cereal apocalypse is upon us.

Classic cereals of the past are currently being forced to bump elbows with some of the strangest new additions to the junk food breakfast market in some time. The main theme seems to be, “Hey! Remember that snack you liked? It’s a cereal now.” Nilla Wafers? Yes. S’mores? Check. Nutter Butter? You butter believe it.

While some of these flavours and brands make sense, others seem to be really reaching in terms of what they can bring to the already saturated cereal landscape. Often times consumers, such as myself, don’t have the gall to commit to a family-sized box of what could potentially be an inedible disaster.

But I decided to take one for the team. After getting permission from Snacktaku overlord Mike Fahey, I went out and purchased the seven wildest sugar blasted cereals I could find, and then I ate them over the course of a week.

Let’s break it down from best to worst.


Cinnamon Toast Crunch Churros

Initial Thoughts: As someone who has never had an authentic churro, I wasn’t sure how General Mills was planning to warp the already excellent Cinnamon Toast Crunch to line up with the requirements of a fried dough pastry. Outwardly, the cereal just looked like Cinnamon Toast Crunch in tube form, which sounded fine to me. I was optimistic to say the least.

After Eating: Yeah, turns out Cinnamon Toast Crunch Churros really are just thicker, crunchier, noodle-shaped cereal bits with the exact same taste. And I’m fine with that! “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” I say. When I was finished with my first bowl, I immediately poured myself another sugary mountain. God help me.

Verdict: Churros is the only cereal I’m probably going to buy another box of in the near future. They might actually be better than the classic brand they’re based on, which is quite the feat.


Pop Tarts Cereal: Frosted Strawberry

Initial Thoughts: Pop Tarts have long been the go-to breakfast of the cool and unhealthy alike. Growing up, I was only allowed to eat Pop Tarts at my grandma’s house, and even then only as a special snack. It’s actually somewhat strange that there hasn’t been a Pop Tarts cereal since the mid '90s.

After Eating: Each little Pop Tarts nugget houses its own microscopic drop of strawberry flavour (or brown sugar cinnamon flavour, if you go that route). The consistency is strangely chewy, but it works well enough that I would actually consider eating it for breakfast on a normal work day. Don’t tell my parents.

Verdict: Pop Tarts cereal is pretty tasty when doused in milk, but it’s also a great dry snack. Just don’t try pouring it in your toaster.


Hostess Honey Bun Cereal

Initial Thoughts: Honey and cinnamon have long been two of the most popular cereal flavours on the market. It would take some serious effort for Post and Hostess to mess up something as simple as a Honey Bun cereal. I’ve never gravitated towards the classic snack rolls in the past, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy them on occasion.

After Eating: Honey Bun cereal really does taste like the real thing. Granted, it doesn’t have the soft and gooey texture of a real Honey Bun, because that would just be gross. It’s nothing revolutionary, but it gets the job done if you’re in need of a sugary treat or breakfast meal. I’d go so far as to say I actually prefer the cereal to the original roll.

Verdict: If you’re a fan of the snack roll, you can’t really go wrong with Honey Bun. Now we just need a Zebra Cake cereal...


Lucio Oh’s

Initial Thoughts: I love Overwatch. As someone who considers himself a “Lucio main,” I was immediately on board to try this once-fictitious cereal. At first glance I thought Lucio Oh’s might be some sort of Froot Loops reimagining, but soon spotted the graphic promoting the cereals “Sonic Vanilla” flavour. The box itself is pretty slick looking, not to mention it includes a free download for an actual album and somehting called a “Loot Boost.” Neat.

After Eating: “Sonic Vanilla” sure does taste like regular vanilla to me, and I’m starting to understand why there aren’t many other cereals that shoot for that flavour as their selling point. It’s a bit dull and underwhelming in the long run. Lucio Oh’s sort of taste like stale Apple Jacks, which isn’t the worst thing in the world, but it’s certainly not the best.

Verdict: Lucio Oh’s were fine, but one box was enough for me. I’ll just listen to my free Lucio album while I wait for Genji Charms and Pharah Flakes to drop.


Fruity Lucky Charms

Initial Thoughts: Lucky Charms seems to be going through an identity crisis as of late. In the last year alone there have been Chocolate Lucky Charms, All Marshmallow Lucky Charms, and some kind of weird Lucky Charms and Frosted Flakes mash-up. The cereal’s newest trend is getting all fruity up in your mouth. “What kind of fruit?” you may ask. Well, that’s a darn good question that General Mills does not wish to answer. The non-marshmallow bits are red though, and that’s our only hint.

After Eating: Fruity Lucky Charms are overwhelming on just about every front. They’re so sugary I could practically feel each mouthful melting away my enamel. The sweet smell of the cereal is very reminiscent of a teenager who wasn’t sure how much body spray they needed, and decided to unload the entire can on their torso.

The careful balance between the oat pieces and marshmallows of the original Lucky Charms has been replaced with a non-stop fruit extravaganza.

Verdict: Just get normal Lucky Charms. This fruity variety is just too overpowering. My dog did enjoy them when I dropped a few pieces on the kitchen floor. So there’s that.


Sour Patch Kids Flavored Cereal

Initial Thoughts: Of all the candy brands already in existence, Sour Patch Kids is probably the last I would pick to transform into a cereal. Who in their right mind wants to start their day with a big bowl of sour-blasted children?

I watched other consumers discover this cereal, pick it up, scrunch their face in disgusted confusion, and put it back as they shook their head. That’s the appropriate reaction, and I was certain Sour Patch Kids cereal was a horrendous mistake before it even hit my lips.

After Eating: Look, I gotta give props to whoever spent their late nights in the Post flavour lab for making Sour Patch Kids cereal taste just like its source candy. These little guys are a light and crunchy version of their gummy brethren. But as I predicted, it just doesn’t make for a good cereal. The sour taste of each spoonful, and the unfortunate flavour of the milk after it’s been soaking in tangy tots, is terrible.

Fun Fact: If you listen to Sour Patch Kids cereal closely after pouring your milk, you can hear a distinct crackling noise. This is likely the sour children crying out to warn your mouth.

Verdict: Eat real Sour Patch Kids instead, and keep them away from breakfast time.


Dippin’ Dots: Cookies ‘n Creme Cereal

Initial Thoughts: The “Ice Cream of the Future” is now the cereal of the present. If you have never experienced the disappointment of buying a small cup of Dippin’ Dots at the zoo or a local sporting event for $US10, well, I envy you.

Dippin’ Dots is easily ice cream’s most unnecessary and overhyped form. I guess I could see how its shape and basic flavours could be translated to cereal, but past run-ins with the brand have made me leery that they can’t do much right.

After Eating: I’ll admit that I didn’t think any cereal on this list was going to fall lower than Sour Patch Kids, but boy howdy was I wrong. Dippin’ Dots is straight up nasty. It tastes like Kix, if Kix wanted you to suffer. It somehow manages to be both bland and disgusting at the same time, and it smells even worse. It was the only cereal I tried that I gave up on half way through. It seems my Dippin’ Dots fears were well warranted.

Verdict: Absolutely do not, for any reason, put this cereal in or around your mouth.


And thus the great cereal experiment comes to an end. Now I have to figure out what to do with multiple family-sized boxes of cereal that I’ll certainly never consume — an unfortunate fate that I’ve hopefully saved Kotaku readers from experiencing in the near future.

    Good job again Kotaku AUSTRALIA.

    Since Allure has fired everyone why not just take out the automatic geographical forwarding to the AU website since we pretty much just get the US crap anyway.

      The picture made is pretty obvious this article is from Kotaku US.

      Yet you still clicked on it just to bitch and moan.

        Unless you're seeing a different image to me, there's nothing to suggest that the cereal is US based, especially if you're not much of a cereal fan.
        Standard packaging, fl oz measurements, nothing stands out as being US specific produce.
        What was it that you saw to indicate it was US ?

        Maybe they're complaining, because remaining silent is passive compliance, and they'd prefer to have the higher quality Australian articles back again ? If that's the case, they're not alone..

          fl oz is not used in Australia. Fluid is measured in metric millilitres (ml) or litres.

          Also, not one of these brands is available in the usual Australia supermarkets. Anyone who spends much time in the cereal isle would fail to recognise a single one of them.

          Of course, if your mum does all the family shopping it's okay that you didn't pick any of this up.

            You know, some days, it's just too easy. It's like shooting fish in a barrel.

            First off, thank you for proving the very point I was making.

Yet you still clicked on it just to bitch and moan" was the statement I'd queried, suggesting the OP had seen the news feed, missed some obvious indicator in the promoting picture, clicked on the article and then subsequently complained.

            Misspelling aside, neither the news feed, the promoting picture, the subsequent five pictures (unless you click on the initial one and scrutinise it) make it evident that it is US specific, unless you happen to know US cereal brands - like the OP.
            In fact, it's not until you get halfway through the article, that the image shows fl oz, by which time it should have been obvious from the grammar that it is a US centric article, even though LH has made the effort to change the spelling.
            It was a basic logic assertion that was still by missed by more than one person.

            Are people still using that weak 'your mum' thing ? I would have thought that generation would have grown up and have kids by now..

        Given Lucky Charms were in America when I was born there 30 years ago I actually thought from the picture that maybe indeed there were some "weird new cereals" entering the Australian market as it's something outside of import shops/aisles we haven't had here.

        What exactly from that picture tells you it's "pretty obvious" that it US and not simply actually highlighting something new (and therefore by definition something we don't/haven't had here before)?

        In terms of bitching and moaning I simply said why not remove the geo forwarding to the US site since in the last few months Australian content has dipped dramatically (no stats, just my opinion.)

        In the past Alex for example told people to ensure they commented about the excessive advertising so it could be used as feedback for the decision makers. So I see no problem giving the feedback that might be able to be used to help make it a product I enjoy more often than not again.

        Not everyone, but you may of realised a large number of people giving their goodbyes late last year right at the time that Allure 'integrated' into Pedestrian.TV group.

          This is something I'd missed, and the following explains the change in both articles and audience: "welcome Allure Media into the family to create a clear publishing leader for marketers wanting to target young Aussies"

          Well, it seems like Gizmodo and Lifehacker are now directly opposed to each other.
          LH was originally aimed at the slightly older and more intelligent audience.

    Safe to say any American cereal will come with three times your daily intake of sugar

    I actually respect people putting their mouths on the line to review weird foods for us

    I risk my own tastebuds without being paid for it way too often, having someone be paid to do it for me is an honorable and neccesary job

    Eat more strange foods to tell us wich are tasty

    In my own testing of various chip flavours i can say sweetcorn flavoured chips are bizzare and degintely and aqquired taste, the smiths garlic bread flavoured chips legit taste like actual garlic bread and it is amazing, but the smiths mac and cheese chils are awful and to be avoided, the smiths tomato salsa chips dont tasty at all like tomato salsa but are still pretty tasty and doritos shouthern chicken is just boring generic vaguely spicy flavour

    Sharing the results of food testing saves everyones tastebuds from the horrors of bad food gimmicks, we should all be sharing our results to save each other the pain of bad food

    Why the hell wouldn't you call them Luci-OHs?

      In the OW universe they are called Lucio-ohs(!) too.
      He even has a voice line saying, "Try some Lucio-ohs!"

    It is kinda of stupid to have this one printed on the Aus site. Not to mention, if it weren’t for the Overwath reference this one wouldn’t have anything to do with video games or Japan. It’s tangental at best.

    Beyond all the hub-ub in the comments whining about US/AUS articles, behaving like Kotaku insulted their mother... That shark bowl is adorable af.
