It’s an especially good day on Steam. Not as good as it was over the break mind you, because there was a day there when Left 4 Dead 2 was literally free. It actually kind of broke the Steam front page. But I hear tell that when free isn’t available, cheap is the next best thing. And these are certainly cheap.
Get ready to spend some money. As before, this post is part aggregation of what I think are the best deals, and part excuse to have the headline pop up one everyone’s news feeds, be that RSS, Twitter, etc, and induce a moment of “Oh, crap! I only have 10 minutes left to spend $3 on that game I’ve been wanting for a while!”
It’s a public service, really.
First up, Dark Souls for $9.98 USD. You’ve heard the stories. It says something when a game’s hype is nearly 100% generated by the stories of those who play it. Don’t be dissuaded by the “it’s too hard” crowd. It’s hard at first, in the way that new things can be, but difficulty is far from the game’s only talking point.
Hotline Miami is $1.99 USD at the moment, and it’s another challenging game. This one a few Game of the Year awards, too, and manages to pack a lot of meaning into its simple, retro graphics.
DmC Devil May Cry is both superb and superbly underrated, and is going for $12.49 USD right now. It’s Ninja Theory’s take on the franchise, but it’s far from Baby’s First Combat System.
And moving on to the sales that will only last a few more hours, you can pick up the fantastic Bastion for $2.24 USD, and the two-player versus tower defence game Tower Wars for $1.99 USD.
Anything you think we should definitely not miss? Let us know below!

Hate to say it, but so far the sales have been rather lacklustre. A lot of early access games, no big publisher packages and only a handful of big titles on sale. This is the least I’ve spent on steam at this time of year in about 5 years.
I think the plethora of early access games advertised as daily/flash/community choice deals is probably my biggest complaint. I’m sorry, but I’m not paying for the privilege of testing a developer’s game, and especially don’t like being given the impression “hey, it’s a great bargain!” by advertising it as a special sale.
I like the idea of greenlight being able to support finished indie products – I don’t like the idea of Steam becoming some massive beta testing platform, even for indie devs.
Obligatory Dark Souls!! post.
Also make sure you grab dsfix if you buy it to improve the port! And don’t attack the guy by the first bonfire outside of the starting area. Learned that one the hard way…
Pfffft do you even praise the sun?
Everyone needs to check out Van Helsing, It is a great Diablo esque game with a steam punk twist to it. Really enjoyed it.
Completely ignoring Gone home but mentioning DMC.. Shame on you.
DmC isn’t superbly underrated, it’s rated exactly as it should be – it’s got a decent combat system, but it’s laughably easy, horrendously juvenile, and shit’s on both the style and legacy of a once great franchise.
