Trends come and go in gaming. Right now, the big kid on the block is the battle royale game, but it wasn’t that long ago when everyone was looking to capture the MOBA lightning.

Standing for “multiplayer online battle arena,” the vague term became a catch-all for anything involving heroes, levels, and lanes. From the early days of WarCraft III mods to now, there have been many MOBAs. Some are still around, some are dust in the wind. All of them hold a special place in my heart.
Let’s remember some MOBAs.

AirMech’s also becoming an ARPG/ARTS (that’s action + RPG/RTS) instead.
lol. I remember back in the days when HoN was a thing and people thought it was going to be bigger than LoL. Clearly that never happened.
Most of these games were quick rush jobs to cash in on the MOBA craze at the time. Much like what we are seeing right now with KOTK type games. Radical heights is one of the quick cash in games.
Hon was pretty big due to it being seen as the true Dota successor. I’m not sure if it was ever confirmed but ice frog the developer of Dota 1 when it was in its prime (and developer of Dota 2) worked on it. They ported a lot from Dota whereas lol redesigned a lot. When Dota 2 came along that really was the nail on the coffin. A lot of current Dota 2 pros are ex hon pros.
I’ve never played any MOBA.
It’s the ‘M’ that turns me off, and the ‘O’ annoys me.
I also act grumpy and old, so that probably has something to do with it as well.
Ah, Infinite Crisis. So close to getting playable Dex-Starr!

Smite was my favorite, is Smite still a thing?
Definitely still a thing, although not as popular as I imagine it used to be. Just celebrated it’s fourth birthday, and had a tactical card game go into early access late last year (with a clash royale knockoff in development somewhere too, haven’t heard about it in a while). The devs, however, have been putting more focus on Paladins I think. Seems every other week some dev lead is moving from Smite to Paladins.
