This week Rare Replay comes out on Xbox One. Most people think of this package and think, yes! Banjo Kazooie! Sure, why not.
But I’m looking at this and thinking! SPECTRUM GAMES! Jetpac! Knight Lore! Atic Atac!
God I’m old.
Dandy: Or a Brief Glimpse Into the Life of the Candy Alchemist (PC)
What is it? A side-scrolling shooter that looks kinda insane. It’s perma-death, completely different on each playthrough.
Should you care? This looks really slick and polished. I’m keen.
Hidden: On the trail of the Ancients (PC)
What is it? A point n’ click horror/adventure game. Looks cool. Terrible name.
Should you care? I think it looks quite cool in that Resident Evil, so bad it’s terrifying kinda way.
Icebound (PC)
What is it? It’s a visual novel, but a bit more interactive than most. Also a bit more polished.
Should you care? I usually don’t put visual novels in this post, Icebound looks a bit better than the norm.
Rare Replay (Xbox One)
What is it? This is that super Rare collection with loads of games.
Should you care? Yeah, I think I’m keen for this. I want to replay Jetpac!
SAGA (PC)
What is it? Man, why has it taken so long. This is an RTS. And an MMO. It’s an RTSMMO. THIS IS THE FUTURE.
Should you care? People are really excited about this. To be fair it looks really interesting.
Submerged (PC)
What is it? I’ve been looking forward to this for a while now! Developed by ex-2K Canberra guys. Looks beautiful.
Should you care? This might be the one game you have to check out this week. Keen to give it a go myself.
The Logomancer (PC)
What is it? It’s an old-school RPG with dreadful music.
Should you care? It’s apparently pretty interesting in terms of its story and content. I’m cynical.
the static speaks my name (PC)
What is it? Wow. Just the trailer for this is unsettling. This is strange. I need to play this.
Should you care? Just click on the link. I’m really intrigued by this.
Unfinished – An Artist’s Lament (PC)
What is it? It’s a cool looking game about unfinished art. It looks beautiful actually…
Should you care? It’s all hand-drawn and cute. I’m interested to check this out. Consider watching the trailer at the very least.
Wave Mechanics (PC)
What is it? It looks like one of those minimalist puzzle games that I always love.
Should you care? It’s actually pretty hard to tell. It seems interesting, sorta like a new-age Minesweeper.
Buying anything this week? Did we miss anything?

Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Viva Pinata, Blast Corps, Battletoads and Conker are my favourites from that list.
Hopefully the controls hold up well.
I’m curious about the controls myself. Their early 3D games are great but they’re built with C-Button camera controls. I’m not expecting them to go to the same lengths they did with Banjo-Kazooie’s port but at the same time they almost have to unless they want to awkwardly put the C-Buttons on the D-Pad.
Dammit, and I was hoping that I wouldn’t have to get an XBox One, since there have been so few XBox One exclusives I’ve wanted. Now they come up with a legacy package that pretty much makes it an essential purchase by itself.
Submerged is also out on PS4, along with Galak-Z and The Castle Game. I can’t attest to the quality of them but they may appeal to someone.
In other news, I maintain my weekly vigil for Suikoden III. It’s most likely going to be either this week or next week given previous classification times. There’s no entry on the ACB site yet, but that hasn’t always meant a game isn’t coming out.
In other, other news. 5pb games has said they are bringing Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds Overdrive to EU territories but have no word about when yet.
Galak-Z is this week? Holy crap. I’m excited for that one, although don’t know when I’ll find time for it. Damn you, Witcher 3! *shakes fist*
Galak-Z 😀 looks pretty great… looking forward to it
Yeah I’ve noticed that Mark has no real idea when digital games are coming out on the consoles – the other week something like 3 games came out on Xbox one and yet this list was all just Steam related
Most of my knowledge comes from articles scattered across the web that happen to mention release dates so it’s not really surprising that Mark isn’t aware. That’s only the ones that get mentioned too, a lot of stuff just appears with no forewarning.
Knight frickin lore!!!!
You’d old? I thought you were only in your 30s.
So so old 😛
It’s old enough I’ll have you know 😛
I assume with Rare Replay including some backwards compatibility titles this means that we’ll see the August update in the next day or two. Not exactly retro gaming but with any luck there will be a few surprises in the backwards compatibility list.
It’s not a backward-compatibility thing (Xbox backwards compatibility doesn’t mean you can play N64 games!). It’s just a port, same as the Journey update for PS4 or Halo Master Chief Collection.
Yes and no. Rare Replay is actually a bundle deal on the marketplace. Most of the games are part of the Rare Replay game similar to how the Master Chief Collection works, but anything with a previous XBOX 360 retail or arcade release (Banjo-Kazooie, BK: Nuts & Bolts, Viva Pinata, Perfect Dark Zero, etc) uses the XBOX 360 backwards compatibility mode being introduced in the August system update. So when you buy it you get the Rare Replay game for XBOX One plus about half a dozen XBOX 360 games. It’s a little weird but it means they can throw the more modern/advanced games into it without having to worry too much about breaking them.
Excited for Rare Replay and Galak-Z.
Oh, wow, Submerged. I heard about that ages ago when they first started working on it, and I’d assumed they’d shut up shop because I hadn’t heard anything further. Very keen to check that out.
Icebound’s the one with LittleKuriboh in it, isn’t it? Might have to check that one out.
*fingers crossed* i’ll have my copy of rare replay by the end of the week, it shipped late last week so chances are good
Galak-Z is more or less an insta buy for me too
