I think she also somehow gave me a cold. But also, when comments went all googlies, welbot made mention of the circle k, which made me have to go and watch Bill and Ted for old times sake. Still awesome 😀 So all in all, I cant complain, except for the fact she hands out colds like permabans.
-
heheh as soon as I said what I did, I wanted to watch it too! 😉 Been so long since I saw either of them!
-
It was the only time that Keanu was ever cool…

I just got a full-on robot chubby!
Good morning folks!
I’ve been staying up all night watching this amazing epic Minecraft adventure series by the Yogscast. Go to the channel bluexephoes and start from the first Minecraft video in the Minecraft playlist. They made it into a RPG. ;O
-
ooops typo there. should be bluexeophos
here’s the link to season 1:
http://www.youtube.com/show?p=M-_uPjfjVzc&s=1-
BLUEXEPHOS! I cannot spell their name :\
-
It’s because you’ve been up all night.
At least you have an excuse…I’ve been getting things wrong and dropping things all morning and I had a full night’s sleep.-
Forgetting things,
Absent Mindedness,
Loss of fine motor control?Strange, if that’s happening to you, then I think you should know.
You’re pregnant (I have diagnosed almost everything possible as pregnancy, although, to my credit, never have I told a man that).
Trust me.
I’m a doctor.

-
Rather amusing linkies dawdle, but why is everyone so obsessed with coal on the first night, wood can be burnt into coal! I want to find that dwarf skin now.
-
At the point in time when they made this, you couldn’t get coal from wood.
Surviving the first night was easy through, just hide in a corner with a single isolated hole to tell you when the day is.
-
Thy egg, tis over my face. :-O
Well, pffffft, they should update the video then, go back to the start I say, do it over!

I know right most bestest thing on youtube. I’ve seen almost all of the episodes. Their commentary is hillarious
Morning. So, ’twas my birthday on the weekend. Normally I don’t care, but I feel 2 decades is a more significant milestone than 21. Anyway, doesn’t matter. I had some friends over on Saturday, we chilled, watched Firefly, complained about Fox, had a Nerf War, and finally got my present. Normally I don’t care, but this has got to be the greatest pair of presents I’ve ever received:
http://imgur.com/a/rl674#x9B7Y
To put some context in, I love Naughty Dog. I have all their PlayStation games, and Jak and Daxter was an amazing series. I’ve been looking for these for a while, and apparently they bought the Jak II statue 5 months ago ‘cos they found it on eBay. They’re awesome.
In other news, I shaved my ‘beard’ and left a moustache. I looked like a hipster. I was scared. I had to shave that too.
Now, off to uni! Have a good day guys. Don’t go to page 2, because then I have to read lots when I get back. And that’s just mean.
-
Weee! Happy belated birthday! Definitly cool looking figures! WOuld look good on any desk!!
-
Happy birthday dude! Being in your 20s is the best. I’m very close to waving bye bye to my 20s and it’s breaking my heart. Only two month till I turn 30. [SOB]
(Also – pic of hipster moustache plz.)
-
I hit club 30 in less than a month, so I am older than you, you young whippersnapper 🙁 (whatever a whippersnapper is)
Why back in my day our videogame consoles had the pause button on the console itself rather than the controller, you kids today are spoilt!
-
Man, when we were kids, our tv was made with wood. Yeah… Wood. Not even good wood, everything was made with lousy chipboard wood.
Anyways, Happy 20 Bday buddy 😀
-
-
4 months for me 🙁
Happy birthday NotR!!!!!!
-
Dark times ahead my friend.
-
-
Being in your 20s is NOT the best, being in your 30s is. I should know, I’m halfway through mine.
-
Honestly?
That makes me feel a bit better about things!
-
They don’t call it the “dirty thirties” for nothing….
-
Thirties… I’ll hold you Mark, and keep you warm. This is how bad things get in your thirties. I went to platinum some tracks on Trials this weekend. And I totally wore the skin off my thumb… Seriously… :-/ Thats never happened b4, sure, I’ve had aching bent nubbby digits, but the skins never fallen off b4.
*worries* -
That’s been happening to me since I was playing the NES (when I’m really in the zone, not like every 2 days >_>) – you’ve obviously just been doing it wrong the entire time 😛
-
Man, you guys are making me feel real young.
Happy Birthday NotoriousR! -
No idea whats happening, its never happened b4. I was only playing about 15 before it started going red and peeling off.
Don’t tell my manly Leather Cap brethren, but I applied a band-aid in desperation… 🙁
-
-
-
Happy belated bday NotoriousRus Rex! 😀 That’s an awesome figure too mate, that’s a great way to spice up any desk you choose
Welcome to internet old!
I have a few spare canes lying around if you want one!
-
I’ll spank you with my cane young man if you don’t stop making me feel really, really ancient.
-
Oh, but you’ll need to get out of that chair to catch us, so somehow I’m not worried.
Until they add jets to chairs. Then we’re screwed,
-
nice statue, I’ve seen that one before and if I was devious enough in the past I could have nicked one.
Though, Sony did make up some lifesize versions of that and this one time at an event, had a few drinks and had a photo taken with me standing right in front of Daxter, who was the perfect height… 😉
need to dig up those photos!
Happy Belated Birthday!
Nice score with the figure loot, too. I’m wondering why Jak suddenly shrank between games though?
That is awesome, in the non-overused form of the word.
Also, I shall proceed to mock you for the next four months about being old, Notorisaur.
-
I just realised, I suck at maths, it’s just under three months, not two.
Oh god, I’ll be… Old.
-
Four* I suck at proofreading.
-
Happy belated birthday! Welcome to the not-teenager portion of life.
Happy Birthday mate 🙂 That statue is sweet.
Happy Belated Old Day!
Yay, thanks guys. I have a warm and fuzzy feeling. In my left ventricle. Should probably go see a doctor 😛
Also, Mark, no Hipster ‘stache. That’d be the first time you’d (and Kotaku AU) ever see me, and you’d forever think I’d be one. Just like the first photo I saw of you is you eating a giant burger/pizza. Which makes you awesome.
happy belated birthday!!
Yappi Birtdaye!
Belated Happy Womb Freedom Day
Happy Birthday NotoriousR
and here i am feeling old at 22 =/ (might I add only recently 22)
I loaded up Dragon Age Origins over the weekend just to have a quick run through. That “I’ll just make a dalish elf” runthrough turned into an all-weekend bender.
WHY IS IT SO GOOD!?
Bioware should pull a CD Projeckt RED and release “Dragon Age 2: Enhanced Edition” For free a year from now, with finishing moves, non-repeated dungeons and more party members.
I totally forgot that on my first playthrough of DA:O, I left Leliana to die in Lothering, as I never stepped foot into the tavern. Whoopsie!
-
I totally did that too. I kept wondering when I was going to find this Leliana everyone kept telling me about so I did some research…oh…there was a tavern in Lothering?! 😛
-
Me too. Thankfully, I remembered on my most recent playthrough. Then summarily left her out of the party for the majority of the game o.O
-
-
Yeah, Origins was amazing (shakes fist at Mark). I think all up, with all the expansions and DLC, it was well over 100 hours.
Which makes what happened with 2 so mystifying. All they had to do was give Origins a polish and a ripping story with new characters.
Have you played .Awakening? Pretty fun
-
Haven’t got to Awakening yet.
Played constantly through the weekend, and checked my character’s stats.
Percentage of Dragon Age Completed: 22%

Okay, I tried to post a comment here, things went horribly wrong. I tried to send an email to Mark about how things went horribly wrong. That went horribly wrong. Mark, if you get about 50 emails from me, sorry. That wasn’t meant to happen.
Odds are, this comment is going to go horribly wrong too. It’s just one of those days.
So, I’m just going to go get meet up with a friend for coffee and hope that my manic disruption of all things technical dies down once I have some caffeine in my system.
Also, the latest Buttercup post is up at the usual place.
-
Something went horribly wrong? 50 EMAILS!? *thud* ^lamboman007 fainted^
This part of Buttercups story is a bit confusing “Considering the amount of blood they left behind, they probably didn’t get too far either. It doesn’t take long for Buttercup to find out why either. Instead of fighting like gentleman and attacking Buttercup one at a time, they instead decide to team up.” Who is this “they” that team up to fight Buttercup? The people that didn’t get very far? (I know it’s the skeletons now, but it was a bit confusing at first) Other than that, it was great as usual. 😀
-
Oops, that was meant to read a little differently. I think I must have accidentally cut a line or two out when I was editing it. Fixed it now for clarity.
With the emails, well, it probably wasn’t 50 emails. The problem is that Apple Mail does not like to play nicely with my trjn.net email addresses. So when I tried to send an email to Mark from one of them, it had a hissy fit and I don’t know if it went through or not. So I then tried to use my gmail address, which had a hissy fit as well because it was still having a hissy fit over the trjn.net emails.
In the end I sent an email from my webmail client, but some or all of the initial emails might have gone through as well.
-
In other news – All I got a chance to play this weekend was Fight Night Champion (a bit disappointing… although the story mode is interesting) and Ghost Trick.
I’m loving Ghost Trick. It’s barely a game really. Just like an awesome anime episode of Diagnosis Murder, but I’ve really gotten sucked into the story.
-
I was going to reply with Ghost Trick discussion, but it would probably be spoiler filled. =(
But I agree, it is awesome, said with my hands facing downwards. -
agreed, the game itself isn’t that great, but the story is fantastic
and btw, make sure no one spoils the ending, becuase it’s fantastic!
SO who else her started pokemons. Ive beaten the third gym leader about 10 hours so far and im really enjoying it.
-
I literally spent half the weekend (most of the afternoon, evenings on Sat/Sun) trying to catch a good natured Joltik, and breed a good natured Mienfoo (finally got an Adamant one last night at 10PM).
HALF MY WEEKEND -
Many Audinos ‘fainted’ between Halo matches on the weekend. Does that count as genocide?
-
I started but i’ve done little more then that. So far i’ve gotten as far as catching my first 2 pokemon… maybe 1 hour in? Damn minecraft is too addictive.
I ♥ Crysis 2!!!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to have fun while playing any other multiplayer game now 🙁
Why do I like Crysis 2 so much? The Nanosuit…the ability to jump, grab onto ledges and pull yourself up is awesome, I love it so much. I like games with freerunning and stuff like that, all these games with stiff jumping and stuff frustrate me.
I’ve been preparing for the inevitable comp where you win a copy of Crysis 2 FOR PC(if your PC can’t handle it, too bad :P). I’ve got three ideas on what the comp will be(if it’s an “anwser in 1000 words or less” one), so I’m all ready 😀
BTW, for those who played the demo, what dogtags did you get awarded the most? Mine was the one for being invisible the most, and for falling the greatest distance without dying(also, the one for being shot in the back the most, but I like to forget about that one…)
-
Hmmm, hows about, instead of a comp for Crysis 2 for PC, they have a comp that gives a PC for Crysis 2!
Hows about it Mark, you could get a sponsor to build an ultimate gaming PC (maybe even welbot could make one, heck, even I could put one together happily, so long as it comes out of Seamus’s pay).
I mean, gizmodo got a rukus to give away… Surely you can wangle a few grand..???
Oh, and lambo, I agree it is fun, but I’ve not played it in a while, has there been any improvement of servers for us aussies?
-
Make it a PC with 3 3d monitors, 2 gtx580’s ♪and a copy of Crysis 2 for pc♪
Though maybe not, it may end up costing more than the car 😀
Also, I haven’t had any problems with the servers, I downloaded the demo on Friday though. You can add me as a friend on it if you want to. My name is lamboman007(just stating the obvious here :P).-
2 GTX 580’s would not be able to run Crysis 2 comfortably on 3 monitors in 3d. Just need to wait for a few months, and get 2 590’s (each 590 is two 580’s strapped together).
-
-
Mark, something that’s relevant to you 😛
http://veggietales.com/sweetpea/videos/
Watch the video on this page 😀
-
Oh. my. God.
-
Pants!
-
Also – you’re fast becoming the new Jimu with your constantly changing username.
-
Is that a bad thing? 😀
-
WTF was that? Wait… hang on… how the heck did you even end up there??
-
-
-
I’m not sure if other people will be able to watch this, but I have no idea who this person is, so if you have Facebook(*with the wide eyed innocence/naivety of a gen y* Does anyone not?) it should theoretically work.
Maybe.
-
Faceboook!!! I curse you!!! Burn!! Why won’t it just go away!!??? I refuse you FB, you sulty seductive beast of the internetz.
Sooo.. errr… whats the general gist of the video here?
-
It’s a drumming busker, but he is really good at doing tricks.
-
HI GUYSSS
MONDAYS MAKE ME SAD.
Would it be weird if I suggested a Kotaku AU Sydneysider meetup IRL?
Promise I’m not an interwebz stalker. Honest.
-
I’d suggest the same thing for Canberra, except that it would end up being me, and maybe one other guy, sitting around, drinking beer and bitching about how bad this city is.
Actually, that sounds like fun, I should get on this.
-
I was thinking about this. Elly was talking a while back about a gaming venue in sydney where drinkies would occur (similar to the Brisbane place) so i think we do a Sydney IRL session, big screen with a Trials HD competition for good fun… I am sure there are a bunch of venues with the required AV equipment to make it fun… Also a few PC’s running the MC server..
it would be my dream night at least!
I’d always be keen for a Sydney event!
-
Gah! Sydney! Its always in Sydney! *holds hands over ears rocking in natal position*
-
Well, Melbourne is getting a mana bar, so not everything’s in Sydney.
-
-
-
I think it would be awesome… but on a saturday pl0x or else I’m no chance of making it D:
-
I’m up for Sydney 😀
-
Swweeeett. Well I thought I’d get the ball rollin’.
How’s lunch on a Sat sound to Sydney people? I’m not sure about your age ranges (some youngun’s may be about) so it sounds like a safe bet for everyone to make it. I’m down for anytime of the day though! Drinks at a bar would be more my thing anyhow.
I’ll tentatively put forward a date – say, Sat 2nd April?
-
page 1 replies are mostly ignored :/ unless you invite mark & make this somewhat official..
-
I just saw the Mark-Signal.
I would be up for a Kotaku meet. I’m there.
-
is the mark signal a flaming torch of pink & light green with a big M on it?

Just to let everyone know, “List of Minecraft Account Passwords Found In Wild” http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/list-of-minecraft-account-passwords-found-in-the-wild-and-server-security-issues.8387/
This applies to people that have downloaded mods and texture packs for Minecraft.
I hope nobody from here has been affected.
-
F**ing humans! Changed my password regardless, thanks for letting us know
NBA Jam is so so good. That’s pretty much all I have to say at this point.
-
Have you got me on your live friend list? we should totally hook up for some multiplayer action!
-
I maaaaybe do, I’m not sure? My tag is just ‘Sughly’ in case I don’t. This is something we must do!
-
Good news: Bought Sam and Max: Season 3 from the playstation store. ($40!)
Bad news: I’ve vowed not to download the next episode until I complete them in order. Meaning I can’t get episode 2 until I finish episode 1… and I’m stuck! 🙁
So… im-Perfect Dark.
How do we do this?
Does one of us start the game and invite a party?
Do we all play a game and invite each other?
Do we form a party, and then launch PD?
Does it make any difference if we co-op, counter-op or something else?
-
Haha, what was going on? That was weird. We ended up getting it to work… unfortunately without you Mac 🙁
What happened to you?
-
Batguy and I had it working early in the piece, but then I tried to add Jimu and it went to pot.
I recieved invites from Jimu, yourself and Batguy but couldn’t connect to games…
I played a few levels on single player, and then went back to Dragon Age.
-
-
I should probably get around to finishing my Xbox copy of PD. I get too easily side-tracked hunting down easter eggs again, though. Cheese! Act your age, Joanna!
-
I don’t get it! I can play with anyone but you. I think we need to get someone that isn’t me or you to host and then it could worrk…?
Was wieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerd!
Just want to mention how awfully saddened I am with the devastation Japan has faced this weekend. I can’t even begin to imagine the sheer terror they have gone through.
This following video shows the incredible forces of nature at work, for a shock, take a look at 4:11 onwards to see how enormous the tsunami was.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAE7GLE_cOc&feature=player_embedded
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the nuclear plants can be kept under some sort of control, it is a wicked thing to try to contend with after the horror they’ve been through. 🙁
-
Yeah it really is pretty unbelievable. Some of that footage just doesn’t seem real.
-
It is just crazy. I have never seen anything like it. just can’t comprehend the scale of it huh?
Just try and imagine this happening in AUS. A few hundred km’s from a major city, thousands dead.. you just can’t picture it.
How do you pick yourself up from that and move forward?
-
Exactly, I mean, they can clean up the mess and start again, but that mess includes whopping great iron tanker ships stranded km’s inland! This will takes years to clean up. 🙁
-
-
-
Honestly, it’s like a movie – some of that stuff you just don’t expect to see in ‘real life’…
…and maybe I can appease some of your concerns about the reactors, Qumulys (over the hump in my medical radiation physics degree, so I know a little bit about stuff) – a lot of the TV reports are hysterical and amount to little more than fear-mongering (BBC, for example, are a complete disgrace with the way they were carrying on with shit even after talking to “experts”)
They were totally justified in evacuating people but there would need to be some very, very serious mismanagement for one of the reactors to go into proper meltdown. The amount of radiation around the reactors now is dangerous so far as it is higher than normal but it’s still a relatively low dose – as of Saturday night it was about the same exposure over the course of a day as you’d get flying around the world nonstop.
It’s a bad situation made worse any way you look at it, but I find it unbelievable that people need to try and make things sound even worse than they are by talking about Chernobyl and [stuff].
I have never played L4D but picked up a UK version of L4D2 on the weekend (#nomoneyforaustralia)
I was and am still sick (Not fully, but the other type of sick), but played it for about 5 minutes. It seriously made me want to get better and get into it. I have not played a console game for weeks now and was missing it. It seems like awesome fun and can’t wait to get into it more!.
In my only real experience with the game, I saw a bunch of zombies in a room, so i thought i’d outsmart them like you do in every other game by closing the door… wrong, they broke the damn thing down and rushed me! crazy.
Looking forward to it.
-
L4D on a console, you poor, poor thing.
I weep for you.
;_;-
Dont be sad for me… $27 game on a console that is powerful enough to play all games released for the platform rather than ongoing hardware upgrades… Im happy.
-
Fair ’nuff, but it’s just a shame you have to buy the DLC for it. Solid game and all, but even after a few rotations, the 4 maps go from familiar to repetitive. The DLC just helps prolong it, is all.
-
Yeah, but with all those free ms points i got last week it doesn’t bother me..
Just kidding!!!
I just can’t do PC gaming at all (excluding minecraft which is more of a social experiment in creativity). I just don’t like it, even though now days i do all console gaming (excluding motion) using my PC monitor and speakers.. so my old arguments about plasmas and recliners are out the window.
I have never had the PC for it so never bothered.
-
I do all my PC gaming from my couch in front of my TV so that argument was allready out the window.
What kind of backwards world is this?!?!?!
-
-
-
Ok, who’s up for a race to page 2?
/me steps out into the lead
/me hangs head, starts panting
-
/me passed out one metre after the starting line
-
Your doing it wrong, we’ll never make it reply to each other… C’mon man, snap to it!
-
Report. Lunch. All went reasonably well. Made a chicken noodle soup, it was hot. Had no soy sauce, compensated with fish sauce. Tasted funny.
(1 step closer to page 2! mwhahahah)
Technical issue. Not sure if this is happening to others, but previous comments I’ve made awaiting approval seem to not be working properly, ie. they vanish. Who broke Kotaku??? (I think it started when Elly was on duty….. :-O )
-
you are just looking for a reason to take this to the next page huh?
-
Look carefully Q-bo, which ones are disappearing?
(I’ll give you a hint, it’s the ones where your name is different).
The site works by showing you which ones are awaiting approval based on a combination of your username and presumably your email address, so when you change the name, it no longer tells you about those awaiting for approval.
-
Hmmm, its possible, but I’m sure it was happening over the weekend as well when I wasn’t changing names. Also, left my email as the same… Oh wells… PAGE 2 😀
-
-
Yeah, I’ve been getting that today too. Not sure what’s going on but I’m willing to blame someone who has no control over it.
-
Are you changing your name? That will do it. It seems that the site recalls your last posting name and only shows pending posts that match. So if you change your name, it forgets about the other ones.
Similarly, if you post with the same name across different devices, you should always be able to see all your pending posts!
I can’t be 100% sure, but I’m pretty sure that’s how it works. It also seems to indicate that if we all just posted with the same name all the time (e.g. “pants”) we should be able to cut Mark and Elly out of the loop entirely 😛
Totally not going for the Page 2 kudos (but man if i get it Qbo will be pissed!
Now playing
‘Gangsta Gangsta’ – NWA – Straight outta Compton… AWESOME
*lamboman007 watches Qumulys from a distance…
Google Docs.
WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME?!
Awesome. Incredibly useful. Stunningly good looking.
That is all.
-
Not completely, I thought it was good too. Until I started going above 10 pages or so, then it starts to really lag in re-opening and I think in activity too. Might not happen to everybody but that’s what I got from friends of mine that are writing stories using google docs
*lamboman007 looks for other competitors, sees Sughly passed out one metre after the starting line
*lamboman007 realises that Page 2 is right beside him…
…and steps over into it 😛
-
GAH! My thunders, yuo stolded dems!
-
Here’s a tip Q-bo, there are 25 comments on every page(not counting replies) That’s how I did it, except someone else got their comment stuck in the way, so my first post on this page should have been the last one on page 1…
/me gets up and makes a mad dash. Collapses again.
-
Dammit!
Well, that was hard work.. So.. Now were here on page 2, what next?
It’s not as satisfying unless you do it by accident.
None of you shall ever surpass the King if you continue with these immature actions. At best you shall be a pale imitation of SpamTod.
-
lol. SpamTod was in his prime the first time we cracked 1000 comments. I’m sure that week was a form of some kind of post-Christmas collective madness.
-
SpamTod will return when we near 2000 comments.
Hop to it boys! xD
-
The idea of 2000 comments both scares and confuses me.
If we get anywhere near that, I think I might find a corner to go hide in.
-
ROFL @ ‘Qumulys is vicks edible?’ on the page formerly known as One.
I’ve been away playing Nier. Something weird just happened to make me question everything I’ve seen/done in the game thus far. I love it when games do that.
-
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP! NieR LOVE!!!
So, I was reading the community review and saw Mark+people talking about story in games and that you don’t necessarily need to have some innovative gameplay – it’s perfectly okay for a game to be about the story and characters.
That got me thinking… okay, games are supposed to be interactive but is gameplay the Be All and End All? Do people watch movies for the camera angles or read books for the type of paper and font used? Admittedly, movies and books are different… but just how much emphasis should be on gameplay and how much should be on the underlying story and characters?
Black Swan and Predator are both great movies, but one is fun and one isn’t (strictly speaking, at least) – let’s say Predator is a CoD or Halo and Black Swan is an Amnesia or Limbo… what really makes the better game and what’s more valued?
(this is just something that I started thinking about when I should’ve been paying attention to a lecture – if I don’t make any sense you may disregard it all 😛 )
-
I’m expecting a thesis on this next week. 2000 page minumum.
-
When it comes to reasons why a game is good, innovation is way down the list for me.
Execution is the most important thing, be it gameplay or story. Something we’ve seen a million times before but done extraordinarily well (say, COD4) is much better than something shiny and new that just doesn’t work.
Most of the time, story in games is pretty lacklustre, but it’s always nice to run into a game that has a tale worth paying attention to.
Also, trying to compare games of different genres in terms of which is better generally doesn’t go well. I wouldn’t say Black Swan is better than Predator, but depending on my mood I might be more inclined to enjoy one over the other.
Games are the same. Sometimes you want Halo, other times Demon’s Souls. That’s one of the reasons score based reviews are useless. I’m more more inclined to listen to a review that says what features the game has and what titles it is similar to than someone that says the music gets a 7, the controls an 8 and the gameplay a 6.5.
-
You know I’m really REALLY glad to hear other people with this point of view. Just last week I was reading a bit from Ron Gilbert about how games should never have cutscenes which got me thinking. Then Roger Ebert had a lecturer defend his comments with this long piece about why games aren’t art – this wasn’t what I was concerned about as much as he was writing about games being about the player shaping the story, and that being paramount to a good game.
I just can’t help but feel there’s such a huge, huge potential for games to be even better storytelling devices. It wasn’t a mistake that Heavy Rain was so popular, and in my honest opinion it wasn’t really that well written and had the potential story and character wise to be even better.
I won’t babble on too much more except to say that I used to play certain games JUST to make my through to the next cutscene. I enjoyed the gameplay enough to keep going, but really at the end of the day it was second to the story. I don’t see, myself, how games ever have to take one element over the other. They can and should always be examples of games going either way.
-
Playing a game through to make it to the cut scene, Gears of War has been that game for me, by rights I should’ve givin it up after the first Berserker, but I want to finish it (I’m finally at the final boss after 1 year and two months of sporadic play) even though parts of it are boring and other parts are punishing, there’s enough charm with the characters and clever ideas for levels (like that one where you have to keep the street lit) that I at least want to see it through to the end.
As for innovation, I agree with Trjn, a well executed game is a joy to play over an innovative mess
-
Brutal. Legend.
Love the world, love the characters, love the soundtrack.
It’s a pity about the gameplay.
I will finish it, at some point, but it’s been lost in the pile of shame, as shiny new releases appear. Still, I want to finish it, just for the story.
-
Trust me on this one, play Gears with a friend. Sit down and just power through in co-op. I never really enjoyed games like Gears until I sat down and played through the co-op campaign with a friend. If you can go through the entire game in one sitting, even better.
Also, games are not art. They aren’t. Anyone trying to claim that they are is just trying to validate the medium using a very misguided argument.
Video games are an entertainment medium, just like films or books. Some films are art, others are just entertainment. People don’t say that Citizen Kane is not a masterpiece just because Armageddon exists. The same can be said of video games.
Ocarina of Time is not art, it’s just a damned good game.
This might be a slight pet peeve of mine, but at least I didn’t rant for a few thousand words about it >.>
-
Haha, if you mean the lecturer who defended Roger then yeah, that was some rant. But a well written one nonetheless! I agree though, they aren’t art, at least not anything released up until now.
-
Art is what I think art is.
You can’t choose for me, that’s the beauty of art. -
Your opinion is wrong and my opinion is irrefutably right! Because I’m of the opinion that opinions work that way now.
Seriously though, I hate the whole concept of “art”. When I look at a pretty picture, I don’t care if it’s art, I care if it’s pretty. When I listen to music, I’m looking for it to move me in certain ways, not if it’s art. When I play games, I’m looking for entertainment, be it through narrative or gameplay or just being shown an interesting concept.
Being art says nothing about the actual quality of what is being discussed. Being art just means that yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.
-
Totally!
-
-
-
Depends on the genre really. Couldn’t care less about the story in a Puzzle Game or Car game(Puzzle Quest included). But give me a badly made RPG with an engrossing story and I’ll sit and play it for hours.
I was only playing RESI 5 for the story, but I can see it sold as well as it did becuase of the gameplay, which to me was …meh.
-
RE4 was like, so totally better. Then again, RE1 and RE2 were better still. I have fond memories of RE3 too, but don’t remember the game very clearly :/
-
I own 2 3 and Dino Crisis 1 and 2. Great games!
-
Guys (and girls),
Word of warning. Don’t do aerobic swimming on a Monday morning. It leaves you empty for the rest of the day :\
At least I got a solid 1.2km’s done in under an hour…
…That’s pretty good after doing no sport for 2 years!
-
OK
A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine recommended I check out the Coffee Laboratory. Today I went with a friend and the coffee was so damned good that I had to go back for a second cup, something I try to avoid doing these days.
Any Briswegians able to get to Kelvin Grove should definitely check it out. They also have a damned comfy couch, but mainly just good coffee.
-
I hate you people and your real cities.
-
Brisbane counts as a real city?
Then again, they’re trying to promote it as “Australia’s New World City” which doesn’t really make sense. I know each of those words separately but stick them together and I start to go a little cross-eyed.
-
Given I used to live in Brisbane, yeah, it’s a real city.
Admittedly, it’s ridiculous, because it never ends (it just absorbed Logan (which itself extends down to the gold coast), and all the other places, so they’re now Brisbane), but it has a real city center.
Canberra, does not. We have 2 streets, with some slightly tall buildings.
-
I was so mesmerised by the strangely designed bus stops when I was there…
-
They hail from the 70s or something, they are odd (the little viewing window IIRC faces away from the Bus’ approach!)
I lived in Canberra many years ago (my brothers still do) and it has come along in leaps and bounds since I left (perhaps because I left!) it’s a lot busier – especially in the CBD which used to be a ghost town on the weekends – and a lot more expensive to live there
-
Yeah, Canberra is now the second most expensive capital city to live in, and it’s really exarcebated by the face that there’s bugger all in the way of Apartments, and the ones that do exit are bad.
I blame the public servants, there are way too many of them with far too much disposable income.
-
-
Do you mean the little circle monstrosity’s? Fun fact, rain seems strangely attracted to them, so somehow, the seats get wet, even when other places (like the road) are dry.
OK, so that was an isolated incident, and was probably actually caused by someone watering their lawn badly.
-
-
I was in Canberra about… 2 weekends ago – and it wasn’t too bad in all honesty. Sure, you’re overrun with public servants and cyclists who think they’re cars and that there’s not a good chance of being killed if they ride all over the road…
…but it wasn’t bad – I enjoyed it overall.
Just as a visit, though. 😛
-
Canberra’s great to visit, and it’s a really nice excessively large town, but it’s not a city.
And when you live here, you realise that there is NOTHING to do.
Damn! that sounds dangerous! I love coffee, and live in bris, but if it’s that good, I might never leave! :0
*adds to to-do list when I visit Queensland*
I’m a big fan of coffee. Not an addict though. Buying one or two cups of coffee every day in the long term is an accumulatively large expense.
I go to Kelvin Grove for uni. I must look further into this…
-
It’s a little tucked away but is still easy enough to find if you know the trick.
The trick is to go to Bishop St.
Has anyone checked out the new Duke Nukem Forever website? pretty awesome…
-
“… I’ve got balls of steel”
-
Having seen your photo from last week, this comment unnerves me greatly.
-
Is anyone else having trouble with the Toyota ad? I’m using Opera and I can’t go more than 5 seconds without it popping up and obscuring a quarter of the view of my screen. As I type this, it is currently occupying the entire length of the comment box, and makes reading the website really fucking annoying. Not trying to rag on having ads on the site, I know it’s necessary, but this is getting wholly intrusive and making it impossible to read stuff. Any suggestions?
-
I’m not sure how related it is, but I’ve been having a lot of trouble with Kotaku today: I’m stuck on mobile broadband during the week and don’t get particularly good reception, so I load about 80% of the page and the Toyota ad. forces my internet to asplode and then timeout.
So I spend the next 20 minutes trying to refresh… normally I don’t mind the ads, but this has been pretty frustrating – Toyota are out of control, they’re trying to takeover the site! D:
-
I’m using Chrome and I’ve had no problems with the toyota ad, apart from it being ugly.
A lot of sites don’t seem to like Opera, maybe if you tried Firefox or Chrome?-
+1 for Chrome. I used to use Firefox, but one of the updates caused a huge memory leak in the add-on manager. Chrome is nice.
-
Housekeeping!
Mark- I sent you an email to your tips address (’cause I hear it’s like the Kotaku Bat-Signal)
Jimu- Rang up Aus Post today and made a lost parcel claim. They reckon it’ll take 10-14 days for them to get back to me (if AC2 has did turn up, well… too bad for Post :3 )
-
Speaking of lost parcels.. has anyone besides sughly got their Dead Rising 2 prizes yet? Kinda worried mine might have got lost, unless Mark or whoever didn’t send them on the same day as Sughly’s.
-
I sent the jacket early – the problem is the posters. Would you guys be happy if I sent something else in place of posters?
-
NO!
I kid.
Did I even win anything in that comp (the answer is yes, but ignore it), it’s been so long, I hardly remember.
-
hehe i guess that would depend on the cool factor of the replacement item 😉
-
Thanks once again for that. So so awesome! I’m having a hard time hanging it up for display though, it’s too heavy!
-
-
-
The last check was wednesday. And no show. Local mail is screwed (Within Aus).
I know I didn’t beat batguy but I just joined the tiny wings 200k club. 200,890. 28x multiplier.
Damn that is hard. I think it was batguy that said the maps change on a regular basis. It helps. I was stuck on 160k for 2 weeks then tonight cracked 175 then 190 then 200 within 20 mins. Awesome.
Anyone else for the 200k club.
-
I’m at the stage you were at – just cracking 150-160. Will break through man!
What’s Batguy’s record?
-
201,955 – but that now pales in comparison to the 216K below!
-
Man, I need to step up!
-
-
Not sure when the levels change but that is the breakthrough i needed. if it wasn’t for the level that i was playing last night i could not do it.
Going to put it down for a while now. Just needed that 200k!
It is times like this where i see that gaming is both so pointless and so rewarding!
-
I hate Tiny Wings. I’m not quite at my Doodle Jump level of obsession, but I’m fast approaching.
It’s gotten to the stage that if I don’t get all the way through the first world, fever mode all the way, I restart the game.
-
It changes every day. From the store description: “Procedural generated graphics will make ‘tiny wings’ look different every day you play”
So if you find a layout that works for you, I guess you get to keep it till midnight!
One thing I’m not sure about is whether it’s the same for everybody every day. Is your current first world orange and yellow with coins in the second valley (can’t be bothered trying to set up a screenshot from work)?
-
-
-
I struggling to get the 26x multiplier thanks to the “get to island 4 without a perfect slide” requirement. There’s been a few times where I got a perfect slide by accident halfway through island three, and other times where I’m getting a great run and then my network drops out which causes the game to crash.
RAGE!
-
That one is tough. The one after it is also a humdinger – get to world 4/5 (can’t remember which) without one single good jump. Hardcore. Need to get my 175,000 score. That’s the last one I need.
-
I think that’s the one I’m stuck on. Although I also have to get 34 seconds of frenzy as well, I keep trying to get to island 4 without the perfect slide (whatever you call the little arrow thing) and failing miserably.
-
I have those ones – just the 175,000 to go.
The perfect slide was an absolute bastard.
-
The most annoying thing about that one was that I had already done it on the previous multiplier and it didn’t count! Took ages to do it again 🙁
-
Ditto for me with the get to the 8th world one.
-
-
-
Grr. I can’t get past 120. Doesn’t help that my son’s always climbing onto my lap asking to watch the yoooohooooooo birdie. 😛
After recording a score of 218k last weekend, I put the game down for a few days and haven’t managed a score over 175k since. Either the levels have been harder recently, or I have fallen out of practice real quick.
On a related note, what’s-his-face who makes Tiny Wings has said he’s not gonna make a version for Android
🙁
Well I have been exploring the awesomeness which is the dc comics app on my iPad I firstly had two thoughts. Number one is how sublime the artists are at conveying emotion eg batman is the dark knight and most criminals fear him. The way the artist convey a man who is so scary and so heroic, so distant yet so caring is truly amazing. Secondly the deep topics that these fictional characters portray, for example one comic is about a average person wanting to kill batman just because he didn’t want to be motivated by fear to be a do gooder. As you can guess batman is my favorite but I’m also starting to enjoy green lantern. So my question can games show these types of emotion that comics do so well, if so which games have you become emotionally invested in ?
-
Yes, games can show depth of emotion. A good team of animators can make the difference between faceless space marine hero #57 and Commander Shepard.
Oddly enough, a good example of a game doing this well is Batman Arkham Asylum. When Batman faces a large group of enemies, they’re pretty bold but once he starts to pick them up they become much more cowardly and fearful.
It’s very rare for me to become invested in a video game character. More often than not, it isn’t something the developers are aiming for and when they do try to achieve it, you can end up with messes like Gears of War 2. Don’t get me started on how ham fisted that game’s emotional content was. Still, on rare occasions where they actually take time to develop a character properly, you get things like Red Dead Redemption.
Hell, they somehow manage to get you to care about the horses in that game. The horses!
-
Games I have been EMOTIONALLY invested in? Hmmm…
Well for sure FF7/8.
9 and 10 din’t really grab me as much, had a lot of fun but…Happiness is an emotion so Resident Evil one, that game is piss funny and fun to play.
The first 3 Silent Hills scared the dickens out of me. I NEEDED to beat them cos the world was so unnerving.
Super Metroid.
I was younger and that whole cutscene at the end with the Metroid baby really did it for me.NieR
I am a father and trying to save my child really worked for me.There’d be more but…
-
Yeah I was going to say Silent Hill 2 for sure. That game had me giving all kinds of emotional investment, was really intense.
Also Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Both games really had me. The endings to both really had me.
-
Just watched Tron Legacy. OMG, that Olivia Wilde, in those skin tight black leggings.
corrrrrrrrrrrrrrr blimy!
-
Still haven’t seen that movie, but I’ve seen enough in the way of pictures to agree with you entirely!
-
I might upset some fans, but the movie was pretty much meh. It was ok I guess, better than most reboot garbage, but still dragged on a bit.
-
-
the plot is pretty meh, but the visuals are absolutely stunning & i love the soundtrack!
Just borrowed Suikoden Tierkres from a mate…AWESOME!
)STILL NO EFFING POKEMANZ!!!(
Right then. If anyones got some spare time, I could use a hand going through the classification legislation
http://classification.gov.au/www/cob/classification.nsf/Page/Classification_in_AustraliaLegislation
I’ve been a bit of a anti-censorship guy for a while now & in the past I seem to recall seeing an odd phrasing relating to RC material.
Paraphrasing what I remember : “any publication refused classification in Australia is not permitted to be sold, or advertised for sale, in Australia”
I’m asking because if this is the case, imports of RC items not intended to be sold on once theyre in country are not explicitly mentioned.
Imports for personal use (and not going to be supplied to minors) are not mentioned…
interesting….
-
I was going to write up a massive [thing] on classification for Let Off Some Steam last weekend, but I was getting too behind in my uni week (and only 2 weeks in – does not bode well!)
Anyways, I had a couple of resources related to what you’re looking for –
Guidelines for the Classification of Publications 2005 (pages 14 & 15)
Publications which fall within the criteria for ‘RC’ classification cannot be legally imported or sold in Australia.
Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995 – More comprehensive, but tells you less… if that’s possible. However, page 90 covers offences and what you can/can’t do with prohibited material (i.e. RC games).
Enjoy!
-
Thanks for the directions.
Tho I’m interested to see that Section 10 (laying out penalties for bringing RC stuff into a ‘Prescribed Area’) defines ‘Prescribed Area’ as the same as in the Northern Territory National Emergency Response Act 2007.I get the impression that this section of the Classification Act is only applicable to certain areas of the NT…
I’ll keep searching… 🙂
-
For anyone who’s interested, the wording on the review board’s MK press release states :
“Computer games classified RC cannot be sold, hired, advertised or demonstrated in Australia.”
Nothing there about importing for private use.
-
I asked in the Mortal Kombat post, but you guys may know…
If the Attourneys General, when they meet in June, recommend introducing an R18 rating… does that then need to go before parlament for them to enact into legislation. Or will their recomendation be all that is required to change the review, and can they start classifying games as R18 from then on.
Also, with each state having different ratings will it need to be passed by their respective governments?
-
Its… awkward.
Each AG of each state would have to aggree to review the ratings system before anything could happen.
When they have unanimus agreement on changing the system, their people go away & draft a new bill (more likely an ammendment to the current legislation) to be voted on. If the AG’s dont like the draft, they dont approve it & we go back to re-drafting. Rince & repeat until all AG’s agree on the amendments to the legislation & it then becomes law.
after which point any game slapped with an RC could be re-submitted, and re-classified using the new guidelines.
-
So, after we spend years fighting for it… it goes to states for the ACL to lobby individual members, and hold it up even longer?
Better still, a state like South Australia will bury it under their ‘common decency laws’.FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
-
-
-
Anyone else coming to Jess Coopers?
It’s a small open-house gathering in Chatty’s. Only about 1% of the population of Australia will be there.
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8223926/teens-facebook-party-attracts-180000
-
Catch you there, Tad ;D
Seriously, that’s awesome, sad and hilarious all at the same time – just don’t tell me a 16y/o doesn’t know how to use Facebook.
I don’t mention this often, although I really should because it’s kinda awesome, I work nine day fortnights. For those who aren’t familiar with the concept, it means that I have a three day weekend every other week. Like I said, kinda awesome.
So over the weekend, on top of playing some Demon’s Souls, writing two Buttercup entries and a short story, discovering the most delicious coffee in Brisbane and getting thoroughly demolished in MVC3, I also managed to watch four of the five seasons of Justice League/Justice League Unlimited.
Anyone who gives a damn about comics really needs to get their hands on that show. Although this isn’t actually new information, I’ve watched the entire run of this show multiple times already.
Speaking of good cartoons, Avatar the Last Airbender. Ignore the fact that the live action movie was an abomination unto film making, the show itself is one of the best animated shows out there.
-
I read a ton of manga – but thinking about maybe reading some comics. Thinking about checking out The Walking Dead, because the show is so awesome.
-
That comic bores the pants off me. Gave up in volume 2.
Here is how it goes:
Zombies
fighting
escape
drama
zombies
fighting
escape
drama. If the characters do it for you and you love zombies then maybe it will be your thing.
I only seem to appreciate zombies in movies and games.GIVE ME ALAN MOORE ANYDAY!
-
Woh, that’s a lie. If you wanna read a good zombie comic get
THE GOON
No-one doesn’t like THE GOON, it’s AMAZING.
I’m very serious here, check it out. Even old jaded comics fans that HATE everything love THE GOON.-
Blur Studio (the folks behind the most super epic video game trailers, such as the Old Republic trailers), are making a film based on The Goon. Their animation ability is devastatingly awesome. If you haven’t seen those Old Republic trailers, go watch them now. Best seen in HD.

-
Haha, I can’t agree with you more. I started that quite a while ago because I heard about the Governer character and wanted to read him. Once I got up to him I read another 2 or 3 issues and stopped. Tres boring.
-
Also I’ve heard the show after the first ep is completely different from the comics, so that might be a deterence to fans of the show. Mebe?
-
-
-
-
“Anyone who gives a damn about comics really needs to get their hands on that show”
Sorry, this does not make any sense. I’m down with the toons and all. But if you want the real stuff, GO AND READ SOME JUSTICE LEAGUE.
The toons are great, but they will always be shit in comparison to a good comic.
-
The DCAU is a great way to dip your toe into the water. Justice League is a very well-executed series that showcases a pretty good range of the heroes in the DC universe, from the big 3 to lesser lights like Vigilante and Booster Gold.
Season 4 in particular has a damn well executed story-arc, with the Question stealing the show.
I’m not saying that it’s a replacement for the comics, but it is a damn good supplement.
-
Yeah, from what I see and hear it’s amazing. Not dissing the show. Just your comment made my brain somersault!
-
Agreed that the DCAU is cool. Nearly finished Superman so i can start JL soon. I like finding out what they have taken from comics and then tracking the comics down.
-
The majority of JL/JLU is new material (although obviously a lot of it builds on earlier DCAU and DC works) although the one standout exception is season 3 episode 2: For The Man Who Has Everything.
It probably counts as one of the best direct adaptations of a comic.
-
ALAAAAAAAAAN MOOOOORE!!!
-
-
-
Yes avatar last airbender is a great show. Loved all 4 series kinda sad how m knight shamalama ding dong didn’t do it justice.
I used to work on a weird roster, doing 12 hour shifts on a 3 week plan. It went like this..
week 1 (worst week)
Mon Tue 6AM-6PM
wednesday off
thurs fri 6PM-6AM sat/sun off
week 2 (best week)
mon tues wed 6pm-6am
thurs,fri,sat,sun, mon, tues off
week 3
wed, thur, fri 6am-6pm
Sat/Sun off
So, every three weeks we got a 6 day weekend :D, well, the first day though you sleep… But it was awesome! This meant we only worked a max of 4 days a week (once every 3 week cycle) and the other 2 weeks were only 3 days of work.
Mind you constantly going from day shift to night shift means we all felt like zombies.
I love Avatar TLA, so excited for the sequel series thingy.
In terms of Justice League Animated, the Justice league show, as well as reruns and new versions of the 90s Batman one were part of my childhood, I really need to get them all, ah well, another purchase for when I’m re-employed.
You should all check out The Flaming C
He will blow your mind.
Maybe.
Finally finished the book I’ve been reading for the past 6 months on the weekend. Took me a lot longer then I thought it would to finish because I was distracted with exams at the end of last year and video games during the holidays. The book in question was Reapers Gale the 7th book in the Malazan Book of the Fallen. It was just over 1200 pages long. I’ve now started reading the 8th book in the series that looks too be about the same length but I’ll hopefully be done with it a lot faster then the one I just read.
What’s everyone else reading at the moment?
-
Just finished reading the hunger games series. Loved it until the last chapter of the last book. Stupid crappy ending caused me to not give a shit about any of the characters
-
I’m trying to finish the Shira Calpurnia series atm, and I must say it’s a page-turner once you get used to the author’s style.
Afterwards, I’m thinking of picking up some more Neil Gaiman. Possibly Stardust or Ansari Boys.
-
Loved American Gods, read Anansi Boys but didn’t really do it for me. For some reason I don’t laugh when I read comedy.
Except for Rob Grant, that gut cracks me up! -
I’m a fan of Anansi Boys. It’s set in the same universe as American Gods but it is a much smaller story. American Gods is about Shadow dealing with a war between the new gods and the old gods, Anansi Boys is about Fat Charlie dealing with his brother.

Akira
Avengers
New Avengers
(hopefully) Batwoman
Whatever I find at the libraryThese are all comics, I’m halfay through and I never know when I’ll get back to them:
Next, Micheal Crichton
Evolution(?), Stephen BaxterManaged to read Crichton’s Prate book in-between both of these and started a Ben Elton book that I don’t ever know when I’ll get back too.
I can zip through a comic very quickly and understand what’s going on. Haven’t had the time to invest in a book since the boy was born!
-
I’m amazed they even released the Chrichton pirate book as a full retail thing. It was clearly an unfinished work, that they’d just slapped bits on to make more money posthumously. Oh well, I still enjoyed it, was just a little bizarre.
-
I loved it. Was Crichton lite, but was such a fun and easy read.
Wait and see waht happens with the next one…
-
-
Akira was such a good read. Been meaning to revisit it for a while now.
-
I’m at Vol3, how many are there?
Will hav to book the rest at the library.
-
-
-
I haven’t been reading lately. When I read, I tend to just power through the book, none of this “doing other things” that most people manage. If I haven’t finished a book 3 days after picking it up, it’s a lost cause. As such, while being busy with my excessive amounts of free time, I haven’t read much lately.
-
A collection of H.P. Lovecraft short stories. It took me waaaay too long to start reading this man – he is absolutely amazing! Although these short stories often have the same patterns: undescribable horror thing (make sure you say that it is so horrificly undescribable as many times as possible), and a crazy man who has gone crazy from seeing said undescribable evil. Still cool though.
-
I love Lovecraft, I agree that they’re rather formulaic, but I still enjoy them.
Have you read The Color Out Of Space!!!!!!! yet? It’s one of my favourites, even if the indescribable alien terror is umm, a glowy thing, that makes stuff die.
-
No I haven’t, but anything that combines ‘Lovecraft’ and ‘Space’ should be awesome indeed!
-
-
-
Can’t read. Must catch more Pokemon.
I’ve just started rereading the Corellian trilogy (last time I read them was ~10 years ago).
-
I’ve just starting reading Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera series. I was a little wary at first of it being the classic fantasy ‘Boy meets girl. Boy feels insignificant. Boy loses girl. Boy discovers he is all-powerful. Boy saves world and girl. Everyone loves Boy.’ but it surprised me, it’s quite good.
And goddamn, when is the next Song of Ice and Fire book coming?!
Soooo, dunking bread in soup is awesomely tasty. So, why has nobody invented a soup sandwich yet?
-
Not quite a soup sandwich, but in when I was in Canada we had these things which were a bread roll with soup inside it. Was so very delicious.
-
but when*
Damn my system of proofreading after I’ve hit submit!
-
I’ve had similar stuff in china. It’s a dumpling with soup and meat inside. They give you a stray to push through the top, and you drink the soup, and then you eat the rest of the dumpling! Sooooooo delicious!
-
errr stray = straw 😐
-
Not sure if I’d count a dumpling, but a roll is pretty close! So, I’m impressed!
Yoghurt sandwich then?
-
Well it’s more like a bun than a traditional dumpling. Quite thick and bread like outside.
-
-
-
Oh hey, I’ve been to a restaurant with those soup dumpling things. Except these are only a few centimetres in diameter, so I think you just pop them into your mouth whole. And then you bite down and the soup pours out LIKE LAVA and you weep as your tongue suffers burns, since it’d be rude and messy to spit the whole thing out in front of everyone.
-
+1 for hilarity
-
-
Can someone explain what the deal is with this grey bar at the top of the page?
Do we have profiles now? Cool
-
Grey bar??
-
I don’t have one… it might be a Facebook thing.
-
Maybe if we had grey bars we could play PD together!
-
But would the Mrs approve of you hanging out in “grey” bars requesting “PD’s”? 😉
-
Mayhap
She let me play Mass Effect, sounds similar.

The most recent upgrade to WordPress added this cool little user toolbar-thing up the top of the page.
Technically, the people who login using facebook have accounts but I doubt you’re able to do anything different because this isn’t the proper site upgrade – fingers crossed that’s coming soon, though!
Hey Mark, I got an email from you last month, asking for my email address, I replied, but I haven’t heard anything back since. What was that all about??
-
I think it was a community kudos thing… still need to send yours out.
-
Oh that reminds me, is that download code for Stacking available? Should I shoot you an email Serrelicious?
-
Stacking please… I am looking forward to that one.
-
-
I haven’t got a reply from you when I replied to your email several weeks back, community kudos for me too… but x2
-
lol
I got the exact same email (asking for my email address instead of physical address)… he must be run off his feet!
You need an assistant Mark – you should hire Tracey Lien, so that if you’re feeling especially busy (read: lazy) she can write your articles for you.

Oh dear… when things go bad…
Story involves snake poisoning and breasts…

can someone tell me where to find page 3?
-
After 2 but before 4. If you reach 5, you’ve gone too far!
-
Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

-
I know I left it here somewhere…
-
Over here.
@ Old Gregg – looking for this?
I hope this is at the top…
-
Nice wurk, and you spat in a few faces while doing it. I’m impressed!
-
facial spitting is what #WINNING is all about . . . & vice versa.
-
-
it’s . . . it’s more beautiful than i could’ve imagined. so many people already enjoying this magical paradise. i think i’m dreaming. this is such a delight; i will name page 3 after the world’s best pornstar: Jenna Haze. Don’t mention it – it’s the least i can do.

here.

DAMMIT!!

HAHA! your thunderz was stolded too!

don’t sweat the small stuff (and it’s all small stuff?) Buzz Aldrin was the second man on the moon. He didn’t lose . . . He was #WINNING from behind? I mean . . . the tail section? . . . that doesn’t seem right either. The point is you can still be #WINNING at the rear end? This isn’t going at all well for me . . . [continue inserting charlie sheen inspired schtick ad nauseam until LAPD turn up with search warrant].

-
Page 3 is right beside me…
-
No wait…I’m on it…
… Ah, here it is.
-
Crap!
I bet that even though my DA2 was sent almost a week later that it will somehow arrive the same day as Pokemon White.
DAMN YOU CRUEL GOD OF GAMING FATE!!!
-
Ozgameshop, by any chance?
Currently waiting for my DA2 too. Sent on Thursday.
Oh well, at least I have Pokemon to keep me entertained. *insert smug expression that you just want to punch here*-
Same.
And I did want to punch you and then you said smug and I remembered Snivy and my heart went all aflutter!-
lol. I dunno, the pig looks pretty cool. I’m out of this debate, I can’t afford pokemans right now 🙁
-
Gotta say, Smugleaf ain’t so great.
I don’t think it’s so much the Pokemon (and certainly that Dream World ability might make it awesomer) and its stats, but rather the Grass typing. Even with good speed and defense, unless you throw up Light Screen and Reflect, the sub-average attack power even with STABed moves isn’t great to work with.
Of course, maybe it’s more of an endgame ‘mon.
*shrugs*-
Hurr, rather, since the attack power is average, you’d probably what Light Screen/Reflect to massively boost your defenses so as to prolong the time you’re out there to whittle down the opponent’s health, because Serperior is no natural staller or wall.
-
I’m picking Smugly cos he looks cool in all his evolutions.
I will beat the game no matter how crap he fights.
It’s Pokemanz! -
When I have this game in 3 months time…
I’m choosing the flaming Guinea Pig. Don’t try and tell me it’s an actual pig, have you even seen one that small? I doubt it, don’t argue with my logic.

Mark
Did you end up reading Parker comic?
If so, what did you think?

Oh, no answer…I am sad
Uber-huge minecraft man!!!!!!!!!!
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb449/lamboman007/Minecraft%20Kotaku%20AU/2011-03-15_101900.png
-
Holy, awesome socks! I’ve not been on for a couple of days (but my daughter has), but I’m logging in right now to check him out! Incredulations!
Well if any of you remember I was doing a minecraft project for a sweetheart I know, I’m about half-way done now, got the site big enough for half of what I planned to make. I learned another important lesson too, don’t take minecraft screenshots from the top of a tower’s balcony looking down, causes the game to crash AND you fall through the floor to the ground when reloading the game since it doesn’t respawn the blocks you’re standing on, before you spawn. But yeah I am getting there, though it’s not going to be as spectacular as the other kotaku members’ projects, far from it. I’m not as creative as them. My jaw drops every time I see what they made on the server.
-
I hope I’m not counted in that creative group, because, my stuff isn’t at all creative, they’re just replica’s.
Still, I hope you’ll be willing to upload some shots so we can see what you’ve done.
-
lol trust me it’s going to be an anticlimax compared to what I’ve seen from the Kotaku group’s screenshots. And I still need to find lava in my SP world GAH!
But yes, I will be posting a few screenshots after I’m done with it, and I will be sending her the world file so she can play through it and find it herself, with my guidance of course :). I think that’s more effective than just a screenshot.
-
I suspect this story will be on Kotaku soon. But apparently an employee of Bioware has been caught upping the score of DA2 on Metacritic.
Wasn’t it just last week that the developers of Two Worlds 2 were accused of trying to manipulate publications and reviews? I’ve read they even went so far as offering bribes and sending out the legal hounds to try to secure favourable stories on the game.
Mark, has a company ever tried to shoehorn you into putting a certain spin to a review/story? Do Companies ask for any specifics beyond the usual time embargoes? Have you ever heard back from a company after a review or story?
-
Publishers will get pissy, but you just have to stand your ground.
What bugs me is the fact that there are people, that work for publishers, that are judged by the review scores for games in their territory – as if how they do their job can change review scores. I find that really insidious.
-
Any word on the above??
-
Seems legit – but I’m going to have a word with EA first.
-
-
Conversely, do publishers/devs any get in contact with reviewers to have them expand on any problems they’ve and/or seek advice on ways to improve [stuff]?
-
I’m sure some do post-release, but I remember MGS4 had a massive closed press event, where they gave reviewers ages to play through a large hunk of the game, and then took their advice to try and implement what they could in the final version. That was straight up pandering to review scores, and I don’t know if anything was actually changed, but it’s quite a good idea really.
-
-
-
I’d love to hear confirmation of this… (Kotaku is probably already on it.)
If it’s a Bioware-staffer (and not a marketing/PR lizard or intern) then I’d be pretty disappointed.
A low Metacritic might hurt sales, yes, but people don’t post those low scores for no reason. There’s a lot of criticism out there and whitewashing it won’t help.
-
You know I’ve never ever looked at Metacritic, I read reviews but I just tend to read them on a handful of trusted websites.
The way some publishers talk about it you’d think Metacritic was the be all and end all of their business!
-
The other day I decided to start work on a piece for my website about going back and playing games I enjoyed years ago. The premise was simple, will playing the game ruin the rose-tinted illusion or allow me to experience something spectacular again?
For my first attempt at this, I went with Trauma Center: Under the Knife. I still haven’t finished playing it, it’s an absolutely exhausting game to play, but it has been incredibly rewarding.
So, people of Kotaku, go find a game you haven’t played in years and play it dammit.
-
Trauma Center is still a relatively new game though. I thought for a minute you were going to suggest something from the 90’s or even 80’s! I for one love revisiting the adventure games of old, I never tire of them. They are magical 😀
-
Games have short shelf lives. A month after most games come out, barely anyone is talking about them. It takes a rare example for something to last more than a year in people’s minds.
Trauma Center came out something like 5 years ago. In that time, there has been a sequel, a remake, a sequel to the remake and then another sequel taking the series in a different direction.
How many other mediums have that sort of progression for a series in such a short time?
I actually think it is more relevant to look at something reasonably recent than something you remember from your childhood. People seem to be obsessed with nostalgia but there’s a lot of fun to be had that we are missing out on simply because we thought we were done with it only a few years ago.
Or maybe it’s just me.
-
No siree, that’s a nice way of putting it! I’m trying to think on what game might be like this for me… maybe Wind Waker which I visited recently? Still much love for that game (except the fetch quest, as Mark eloquently puts it). Maybe also… been meaning to replay Banjo Kazooie since I picked it up cheap. Always wondered if it would still be as good as I remember (though it’s pretty old now).
Maybe Runaway adventure wise? I was one of the few that liked it. Maybe I won’t now…? *shrugs*
-
Banjo Kazooie is an interesting case. It holds up pretty well if you play it again now, and I definitely recommend that you do play it again, but there are some flaws that I think we just put up with back in the N64 days.
That’s another fun part of this, finding parts of games that you used to accept as just how it worked but were actually a bit of a hindrance.
In most cases, I think it’s safe to bet that it’s the camera.
-
HA HA, I got BK on LIVE, it is most definetly the camera!
-
-
-
Unfortunately for me, recent games are part of my childhood, so I can’t really disconnect myself from that.
Still, time to play some Oni!
No wait, it’s too easy now that I’ve learned to abuse it. Damn.
-
I was playing through Perfect Dark… does that count?
My housemate asked how old it was, and I said Nintendo64… he was disappointed it wasn’t as good as he remembered.
-
Really??
It’s about the same for me. Single player is better since I pretty much ignored that back in the day.
-
-
-
I’m gonna go and play the 1999(or is it 1998?) Need For Speed High Stakes 😀
That was the first racing game I ever played, I loved racing as the McLaren F1 😀
I also like that you can download extra cars for it, you can even get the Flying Time Machine Train from BTTF 3 😀
I’m an old game addict.
There is a few SNES games I always replay.
Super Metroid
SMW
DKC2:DKQ
Chrono trigger
Also I always replay Resident Evil 2 about every two years. I can smash through it quickly so it’s fun.
I tried to replay FF8 a few weeks back, got well into the second disk and then was distracted.
Other games I love to replay:
Mario 64
Perfect Dark
Diddy Kong Racing
Castlevania: SotN
FF7
Out Run 2006
And by your standard of old games:
Mario Kart DS
Metroid Prime Pinball.
In other words, I am down with the replay.
I need to go back and replay all those PS2 classics!
JAMES MAC!!
I left a comment on first page. Don’t think you saw it.
RE: PD
We need to have someone else host a game (Sughly, Batguy) then see if we can join. Maybe that will work???
-
Pffft, I’m not hosting a game for you losers.
-
C’moooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon
-
-
Check your NAT settings – if they are ‘strict’, you’ll find it almost impossible to host games, and frequently have trouble joining others. You can check the settings in the Xbox system settings under network settings, then test connection.
Ideally, your NAT section should read ‘open’. ‘Moderate’ is tolerable, however.
To make your NAT read ‘open’ rather than ‘strict’, you’ll need to do some port forwarding for the console. These links will help.

I saw it… we can certainly give it a try.
I might even google PD Matchmaking…Frankly, I’m prepared to give up and go back to Halo… at least I’ve seen that working.

I don’t think I ever tried hosting the other night. I can give a 4 player game another try tonight?

Full-on hate for DA2!
I respect this critic, we don’t often like the same stuff but he writes well and usually explains why he thinks the way he thinks using his brain.
-
I haven’t read any DA2 reviews but from what I’ve heard it’s been getting low scores. I can’t comprehend why. I’ve only played about 6 hours so far and it seems better then DAO. Combat is more fun, it looks better, characters are likable, story isn’t as good so far but is passable and Hawke having a voice is great. I can only guess the hate is because it gets really bad further into the game.
-
This is from someone 15 hrs in, he is disgusted.
Thinks they chose the worst parts of Origins and made 2.
I’m thinking it’s a taste thing. Some people will love some will hate.
I think Bioware’s mistake was making a game that was the modern Baldur’s Gate and then making it’s sequel much more action oriented.-
I’d say they definitely shifted it towards an action mindset.
What could be possibly the worst marketing line of all time (“Think like a General, fight like a Spartan!!”, inexplicably introducing Spartans into a fantasy universe) probably makes this clear. Bear with me for a sec… (mini-rant)
Bioware’s recent games seem to be plagued by something odd, their marketing and PR arm seems to want to pull the game in one direction (Sparta! Blood! Action! GUNS/SWORDS!) while the development team sticks to what it generally does well, creating a relatively deep world with very high quality writing.
As a result, I’ve noticed an odd combination in recent games where (at times) pretty shallow gameplay is backed by really great writing & fantastic characters. Mass Effect 2 had good combat, but the writing really did stand out. It seems that the writing is just about the only thing really attractive about DA2, unless we count the changes to the combat system (and I wasn’t thrilled with the demo).

do you know someone else who thinks up things using only the power of their brain cavities? His name is called Arnold Schwarzenegger. Plus he knows lost of things about everythings! But he knows more about Total Recall than everything else of all time!
But don’t watch this tube if someone is watching you – like someone in a suit or other fun police types – & doesn’t want you seeing super 3 boob lady? Why not?? She’s fun!
: (
Message to all suits – 3 BOOB LADY IS LOUD & PROUD!WARNING: THIS TUBES IS NOT SAFE FOR WROK!!!
Arnold describes the complexities of Total Recall & then some:

magic cloud: poof-!!! [harry potter?] is that you?

3-boob lady and the following comment
“You make me wish I had 3 hands!” was the best thing ever in primary school. All the boys were talking about it.

Get ready for the next game: Flagon Age.
You know that huge game, with a genuinely epic scope? Gone.
All those conversation options? Gone. But now we have a new hyper fidelity engine (definitely not Unreal Engine), and we challenge you to Smack with Knack.
Use your sword to rack up challenge murders, and combine them with things like alcohol to get more points! Experience the amazing 4 hour campaign mode, then step into the super challenge, giving you maybe 3 more hours of playtime!
Flagon Age.
From the makers of Mass Effect 2, and no other games we care to mention.
(Note, I have never played Bulletstorm, but I would probably really enjoy it, I have neither played Dragon Age 2, and am still somewhere in Origins, with the plan to eventually go back and play it, maybe)
The reviewer does have a point. 16 months is already a short development time given the type of game. But when you factor into account all the DA:O DLC and Awakening, who knows how long the actual development time was. It would be hard to argure that EA didn’t rush DA2 out the door. I honestly think this game needed another 6 months in development. You see the same places in the same city, do the same quests and fight the same poeple. It just screams that Bioware really had to scramble to get this game done by a certain deadline. Bioware isn’t the company that would be too concerned with going over budget. So the only thing i can think of was that EA wanted this game on the market ASAP.
-
I always though the short development time wouldn’t matter cos we’d just get the same game with a cool new story.
If they didn’t have time to make new levels why didn’t they mirror some of the old maps and reskin them?
I wouldn’t have noticed.I’m hoping the story makes up for all the mistakes. I can handle sub-par games if the story is fun.
I am dreading the pointless convos though. That’s my prob with Mass Effect. At least in Origins a replay is worth your time cos it changes a few things.
-
From what I’ve read the story generally makes up for the simplistic combat, inventory and some of the conversations.
It has enough intrigue and maturity to work as a decent political thriller. Not exactly “epic hero saves the world”, but enough nonetheless.
-
Hey Jimu I think i went a bit crazy with the whole buy comics on ebay thing. Just bought three batman comics: Long Halloween because its the direct sequel to year one, Killing joke because its the origin tale of the joker and dark victory because its straight after long halloween. I think you turned me into a comic book nerd. Also i think im going to read up the stories of the flash before i dive headfirst into that again to confusing.
-
You just bought some of the best comics EVER. So good work.
Now yu have to readPreacher
The Goon
Watchmen
V for Vendetta
Swampp Thing (ALan Moore)
Ultimate Spider-Man
The dark Knight Returns
The Dark Night Strikes Again.
Daredevil (Bendis, Brubaker, Mack and Miller)
Captain America (Brubaker)
House of M
Planetary
The Authority
The Ultimates
New AvengersAnd after all that:
Promethea
KabukiTheres other stuff too…
-
Everyone here needs to read:
Empowered.
-
I started reading Empowered!
…about 2 years ago and then I got sidetracked… :/
But you’ve reminded me, that’s the important thing!
-
-
With The Ultimates, only read Ultimates 1 and Ultimates 2. Ultimates 3 has nothing to do with anything and is just not that good. Actually, it’s pretty terrible.
Also, that list lacks Superman. Therefore I recommend: For The Man Who Has Everything (I reread it after watching the Justice League episode, still awesome), Red Son and … actually, I don’t think I’ve read many other good Superman stories.
-
Superman : For Tomorrow is really good and the Superma/Batmans are pretty cool too.
-
I agree with all of the above.
Also SUPREME, the greatest Superman story without Superman!
-
-
-
-
Being a bit Bat obsessed myself at the moment, you also need to checkout
The Man Who Laughed ( also a somewhat “sequel” to Year One )
Catwoman : When In Rome ( sidestory to Dark Victory )
Batman : Haunted Knight ( Loeb and Sale reteamed, set between Long Halloween and Dark Victory)
And “Hush” if you don’thave any yet!!
-
Looks good, when’s it come out??
-
About 11 years after Star Wars comes out 😛
-
-
Take control of the last stormtrooper as he goes on his death-defying quest, trying to fulfil the mission given to him by a passing cloaked and mysterious old man, to find the droid he is really looking for…
Oh wait.. *looks at the boxart* wrong kind of stormtrooper 😛

Anyone ever read this?
-
-
That pretty much sums it up.
Derp.
-
-
That’s a bit of a depressing blog, to be honest.
I know companies change over time, but BW relies hugely on its past glory to gain the trust of its fanbase, and when even their long-time employees are dissatisfied it’s not exactly encouraging.
I did it, I finally did it! I got to island 4 without doing a perfect slide!
Unfortunately, I’ve now learned a few habits and the last few games I’ve barely been able to crack 80k and getting frenzy is a lot more difficult that it used to be. Dammit, it’s like the game trains you to suck more so that it is harder.
That’s just mean.
OK, word of warning, if you have any taste whatsoever, don’t watch this, but apparently it became really popular over the weekend on twitter (trending or some such), and uhhh. Well.
I think my ears are bleeding, and I’m honestly not sure why I’m passing this on.
-
When I take over the world, I’m making use of autotune illegal.
Unfortunately, I can’t think of a suitable punishment so anyone caught will just have to be put to death.
-
I have no problems with Auto-tune, if it is used in moderation, it will never be able to replicate, or come close in terms of quality to real vocals, but it doesn’t piss me off that much. Until it’s over-used, or they go for the T Pain effect, then I wish to murder everyone around me.
Anyway, my real problem with that, uhh, thing, is the lyrics, and the accompanying video. The video appears to have been directed by a twelve year old, and I’m pretty sure as a six year old I had written better lyrics for a song than that.
Oh well, some people are just talentless hacks.
-
By the time most people get around to reading this, the latest Adventures of Buttercup will be live on my site.
As always, feedback is appreciated.
Also, on a gameplay related front would people prefer me to continue moving through the Shrine of Storms, go back to Boletarian Palace or maybe start on a new level like the Tower of Latria?
I’ve been doing two hour long playing sessions, which translates into roughly 2500-3000 words (or two posts) and I’m planning on doing another one as soon as possible so that I can have a few extra entries written ahead of schedule. So knowing what people want to see before I do it does help a little.
Another thing is that I’ve been focusing on a spellcaster build for Buttercup because it’s a lot easier for me. I’m willing to work in some melee if people are interested in seeing it, although to be honest I’m not too sure that will offer much more variety. Instead of Soul Arrow and Flame Toss, it’ll be stab or slash :p
-
I like how it currently flows, mostly spells with the occasional foray into weapons, when Buttercup forgets to use spells. Not to mention, if you keep up with spellcasting, you’ll presumably learn more spells, which should keep things interesting.
-
Well, the way Demon’s Souls works is that you learn spells/miracles from the tutors. Initially there are just the two apprentice tutors who don’t know too many useful spells. Really, I’ve got the only stuff worth a damn from them already. Then you have to go rescue the other tutors to be able to access more powerful spells.
For example, the magic tutor is trapped in the Towers of Latria, so I would need to rescue him before gaining access to better magic.
-
-
As far as writing a story goes, Tower of Latria would be a good place to go. I’d love to see how Buttercup deals with some of the creepy goings-on in there.
Reading your Buttercups has made me want to play Demon’s Souls again. My save was on the dead PS3 and I never actually finished it though so I’m wondering if I have the fortitude to begin again.
-
You just want Buttercup to go round a corner, run into something terrifying and go “eek!” :p
-
It looks like the consensus is up.
To the tower of toilets!
(see, it’s funny, because whatever it’s actual name is is kind of vaguely similar to the word latrine, which I have then used the synony- ahh, nevermind.
-
I’m pretty sick of the Shrine of Storms right now (it probably showed more and more with each reference to the skeletons), so I think I can live with a trip to Latria.

ALL YOU MINECRAFT PLAYERS NEED TO WATCH THIS –
THE EYE OF THE CREEPER (MINECRAFT MUSIC VIDEO):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfuofiUfh8U
Such an amazing remake of a classic song.
And the lyrics… are awesome.
-
The words are good, and I know I can’t really criticise people for uploading bad singing to the internet, but oh god, my ears.
-
I can most likely sing better than that guy, according to others I know, but I choose not to cuz I always get so embarrassed singing
That Bioware/Metacritic/DA2 fiasco is interesting, if only to see how diligent the person was who found the link:
Here are the details: http://i.imgur.com/BEZOe.png
Obviously not confirmed, but something to think about.

CLASSIC!
Th “crackdown” on MK makes me feel like a 6 year old who’s parents said they cannot play it, while the cool kids get to go home and smash it.
Also, Dick Smith no longer has Pokemon Black/White for $47, Game has it for $58 which is the best I have seen today.
-
We’re between a rock and a hard place with MK and the whole thing scenario is just so petty and stupid (why would you not want an R18+ rating bracket?!)
As for Pokemon: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I was thinking about getting Black while it was cheap, but I wouldn’t’ve been able to play until I picked up a 3DS… oh well, the price is bound to drop again over the next month…
[Apologies if this is a double post, please delete if it is admins!]
It’s still $47 at Big W until Wednesday 23rd of March. Check out the catalogue on their site. That’s where I got mine!

Wait a minute……
It’s, $47, at big W? I don’t know why your shopping for your it’s at big w, you can actually make them yourself. I’ll lend you a few to get you by, just copy/paste when needed.

Its Wednesday. Obviously, someone completely cocked up the spelling of that one.
“Lets call it Wendsday, after Wendy my left handed donkey” said the guy who invented it.
So his humpbacked, overly trodden servant writes its down, as his master is all too important to learn spelling ‘werds’ and such.
“Are you sure thats how its spelt?” said his twirled mustached master.
But by then it was too late, so when the servant noticed the error he chortled “Why yes sir, can we please whip my face today, my cheeks keep sticking to the lavatory seat due to all the red raw pussiness and all…”
Thats my theory anyway…
-
Nice theory, but the reason I’ve heard for the names is pretty awesome.
Sunday = Sun’s day
Monday = Moon’s day
Tuesday = Tyr’s day
Wednesday = Woden/Odin’s day
Thursday = Thor’s day
Friday = Freya’s day
Saturday = Saturn’s dayI particularly like this because whenever some random Bible thumper complains that we need to put the Christ back in Christmas, I can reply that I’m fine with that, as long as they put the Thor back in Thursday.
-
Isn’t Jesus really just Santa for grown ups?
But, I vote yes on Thor’s day thing, but also wish to double up the supply of Saturdays, So, definitely Monday is out the door.
-
I seriously didn’t know that was how they were named.
Kudos to you for teaching me something new (and awesome). I have new respect for Wednesday now! xD
-
Calling it “hump day” now just seems disrespectful, doesn’t it?
-
I’d be quite flattered actually! 😀
-
Well, we can move “hump day” to Friday, because it’s Freya’s day! 😀
God I love Norse Mythology! xD
-
Well played, good sir. Well played indeed.

I only just got up, my sleeping pattern is really not conducive to taking part in TAY properly.
I’m on a spam quest today, so I’m going back over old ground. Particularly for Mark, cause I think he may enjoy it. This video artwork is the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. All made by one guy, the quality is astoundingly superb. Do yourself a favour and watch it in HD on your lunchbreak, its a serene masterpiece, honestly.
It’s really odd that I read the Demon’s Souls wiki about the section of the game that I’m meant to play instead of using it to see what I’ve missed in the section I just played. Then again, I’ve already watched a Let’s Play to get a good idea of how things work in the game, so spoilers aren’t much of an issue.
The problem is that doing the Buttercup stuff requires playing the game differently than I normally would. Probably the biggest difference between playing normally and playing with the intent to write is that I’m constantly taking note of what is going on and trying to work out how I can use that.
Still, I’m enjoying it, so it isn’t a bad difference.
-
Demon’s Souls became one of my favourite games before I’d even played it.
I watched my husband play it and I’d check the wiki for him to help him and somewhere along the way I fell in love with it. It was just such an amazingly atmospheric world that I felt like I was there with him even though I was only watching. It’s the first game I’ve found that knowing a lot about it didn’t actually hinder my enjoyment.

I think part of the appeal to Demon’s Souls is the philosophy the dev team has towards difficulty. Here’s a quote from the main man behind Demon’s Souls about Dark Souls:
The way I put it to my team is that we are trying to make the most difficult game that it is possible to make, which at the same time can be conquered by those who persevere. It has to be firm, but fair. There’s a contradiction there, I realise. As such, we have five key criteria on which the difficulty level is judged. We want any player to be able to clear any obstacle simply by learning from mistakes and paying close attention. Then the reasons for failure must always be clear and understandable. Every problem must have multiple solutions, so that players can tackle it in any way they want. The game’s controls can never be a factor from which difficulty is derived. And finally, we want to make sure that there’s the possibility for miracles to happen; those magical moments that spread stories outside of the confines of the gameworld.
In my mind, that is the absolutely perfect approach to designing a game. So that’s what really appeals to me, they’ve executed the idea of “hard but fair” as well as anyone else has ever managed.
The atmosphere of the game is definitely a plus too. They’ve really managed to capture the image of a desolate Western style RPG.

My goodness! This explains a bit, why Jobs says all apples products are magical, while Homer says pork chops, bacon and ham come from a magical animal. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
Ok, so last week I bitched about not being able to register with AustralianGamer.
They still don’t want me, so I’m going to be crashing on Kotaku’s couch for a while.
-
We’ll take you in!
Qumulys needs someone new to play with, anyway. 😛 -
Yea, just stay here! We’re quite friendly 😀
*hides the brain-eating zombies and fire-breathing dragons away*-
Oh. I see how it is. Just use me when it suits you…
…fine! Maybe next time you want me to help you with a “pest”, I will be busy…
*humph*

So what do Barin’s taste like btw?
-
Kinda Like Chicken.

/me adopts cute kitten pose and pokes and prods E-Boy like a dead mouse
-
Indeed, my likeness to a dead mouse is uncanny
-
Can someone explain OzGameShop to me? Why are they so cheap?
-
Because they’re the ones who were banging 7-gram rocks with Charlie Sheen. #Winning.
-
Because they’re actually UKGameShop and don’t have a real storefront to pay for.
-
Because they are awesome?
-
They’re British based, so we get their pricing which is slightly better than our thanks to exchange rates. Combine that with a lack of VAT (international sales don’t pay it, just like someone purchasing something here from overseas doesn’t pay GST) and the nearly free postage from the Royal Mail and you get something that is remarkably good value.
There are also less overheads involved in a purely online based store, just need to pay a handful of people to keep on top of things and a few other minor things like storage.
Finally, they probably don’t make too much from each individual sale. Instead they probably aim to make most of their profit from sheer volume of sales, much like Steam. Considering it is part of a larger store that focuses on selling to the UK, so they probably don’t care about making crazy profits from this just make a little extra on the side.
Of course all of this is completely guess work, but I’d be willing to bet that I got at least some of this right.
-
Also, I imagine that there is more distribution competition in Europe compared to Australia. So whilst retailers are forced to all buy from the same source and thus are forced to buy the games at inflated prices, in Europe it might be possible that retailers may be able to buy games much cheaper.
-
-
MAGICKS
Also possibly the same reason Zavvi is cheap? (I don’t know why this is, mind you) Ozgameshop is actually a sub-store of 365Games. A year or two ago, everyone seemed to be importing from either Zavvi or 365, and I guess 365 noticed a tonne of orders coming from Australia, so they set up Ozgameshop just for us, also saving us a few bucks for currency conversion.
Of course, part of it seems to be the strong Australian Dollar, but the rest of it, who knows? Even the major retailer Game(.co.uk) manages to slash a decent 10 pounds off of new releases, so maybe in the UK, it’s just flat out cheaper.
Part of Mark’s article on why games are more expensive here has also mentioned goofy stuff like publishers sending AU copies over to the UK distributor first, so maybe by sending directly from the UK via Royal Mail/Auspost, there are fewer companies being dealt with that would normally add extra costs associated with sending stuff to Australia. It’d be interesting to see how Ozgameshop adjust pricing when our dollar starts falling. Maybe the ~$60 console games we see now might be bumped up $80-90, in which case, you might as well head down to JB or Big W or pricematch somewhere. Or maybe they might absorb some of the impact since they seem to get a lot of business regardless.
-
Thanks for the info guys. Ordered Shogun 2 and Halo Reach CE from them, for around $90. Considering the standard edition Halo Reach is around $90 and Shogun 2 around the same, I think I saved myself a fair amount!
-
Its funny cause its true! See, I’m not crazy!
Ok, your all distracting me now, I have a guitar to restring here, lemme concentrate..
Oh noes I’ve been watching too many Minecraft videos lately that my nightmares have turned blocky and pixelated D:
Hope I’m not starting a trend here, but I’ve got a brand spanking new iPod Touch 8GB sitting on my desk that I’m looking to sell for $200, being $90 off RRP. It came for free (well, after rebate) with my new laptop!
I figured that somebody here might be interested given the ever-increasing gaming profile iOS devices have. So drop me an email at batguy.kotaku@gmail.com if you are. We can arrange pickup or postage as appropriate (I’m in Sydney).
No sweat if nobody wants it – I’ll put it on ebay at the end of the week anyway where the average price seems to be about $220.
-
Couple of months too late for me, although I didn’t pay much more than that and got the added bonus of being able to buy it from a vending machine. That was fun. Almost like a ‘skilltester’ game, but you didn’t need any skills and they didn’t send someone in every day to loosen the claw. 😛
-
Did you get the new Macbook Pro?
-
Sure did! It’s still in transit though 🙁
I’m getting a bit experimental with this one by replacing the DVD drive with a 128GB SSD. That way I’ll get the advantage of super-fast OS and application performance on one hard drive, but still have plenty of space on the other 750GB drive for photos and media. Should be sweeeet.
-
As someone with a shiny new MacBook Air, I can tell you that you made the right choice there.
Disk drives are pretty useless and SSDs are made of beautiful mix of win and awesome.
-
-
-
You should give it to the first person who can beat you at any game. Oh but wait, then you’d never get rid of it! *bud-dum-tish*! Ahhhh, I crack myself up…
-
Oh really? Batguy, choose a racing event in NFS HP, then let’s compare times 😀 (yes, that’s my brilliant strategy for getting around Autolog’s un-cross-platform-ness)
-
I’m not going to put the iPod on the line (sorry) but I wouldn’t mind getting back into NFS. I can’t remember which tracks are good so I’ll let you suggest one and we can compete! Add Batguy if you are on XBL.
-
“I’m not going to put the iPod on the line” Because you’re scared, you now I’m gonna beat you 😛
Can’t add you on XBL, due to my lack-of-Xbox-360-ness
I haven’t been into NFS HP recently either, I’ll go and pick a random track shortly.
-
-
-
But you see, he’s already been beaten!
What’s that, you can’t “win” Minecraft. I beg to differ. *calls in Tad for some Sheen quotes*
-
#Winning.
-
-
They should rename this section ‘procrastinate amongst yourselves’.
-
*bad-dum-tish*!
-
Wow, tough crowd…
-
Sorry, I was laughing so hard I couldn’t type!
-
I knew it! I can always count on you, brudda
-
-
-
-
i wouldn’t want it to be PAY though..
or should be PrAY instead? -
PAY + Australian flag on the front page… yeah, we get reminded of how much we pay through the nose for our games already chap 😛
Was funny though lol
-
Haha, that was such a pity compliment. But thank you 😀
-
Rofl sorry buddy, just saying it like it is, I did laugh a lot there cuz it’s true xD
-
-
After my less than successful attempts at competitive Pokemon back in the days of Platinum, I’ve pretty much worn myself out on Pokemon.
So originally, I just didn’t care about Black and White editions. The games have grown stale, there’s nothing they can really add to the series now that would get me to go back to grinding away.
And yet, today I set myself out on a mission to find a copy of Pokemon White for under $50. Big W was selling it for $47 but they were all out. JB Hi-fi had their price listed as $59, so that wouldn’t do either. Instead I just asked one of the staff at JB if they’d price match Big W. They wouldn’t but they’d sell it to me for $49.
Good enough.
Now I have a copy of Pokemon White and I’m not entirely sure I want to play it :p It doesn’t help that my gaming load right now is a bit larger than normal.
-
I AM JELLLLLLYYYY!!!
-
This thread just reads to me ‘yeah I got this game Jimu really wants… don’t really care to play it. Isn’t that annoying Jimu? Huh? Isn’t it?’
-
My cunning plan, it has been uncovered!
-
Haha, yeah I’m onto you. Spending $50 just to make people jealous, you should be ashamed of yourself!
-
-
It really reminds me of Eddie Murphy’s bit on his Delirious show, when he’s got his ice cream and just doesn’t eat it and singing in front of the kid while holding it “You got no iiiiice cream, you got no iiice cream, cuz your family’s on the welfare!” xD
-
Hey, that’s what I’ve doing. Had it sitting on my coffee table since the weekend and haven’t even removed the game from the case. Jealous? You’re jealous.
And is it just me, or are Jimu’s protests reminiscent of Fawful from the Mario and Luigi DS games: “I HAVE FURY!!”. Every time I read them that’s what I think of!
-
-
-
Haha, exquisitely timed, to be one minute before Jimu’s lack of Pokemons 😛
However, I think the fact that the Unova region has ONLY new Pokemon (up until post game, that is) and the new 3D environments will spruce up the experience, and although the formula will be familiar, it’ll still feel “new”, rather than “polished, but more of the same”.
-
Im just happy I wont stay in one town revisiting the same dungeons having to keep tapping attack all the time.
-
So…over DA2 already?
-
Just getting in the right mind set so when I play DA2, I won’t get FF13ed
-
-
-
-
The story is much more involved in Black and White – you meet many of the main characters (including gym leaders) many times throughout the course of the story, and the bad guys (Team Plasma) are everywhere. Combined with the 150+ new pokemon, the lack of ‘old’ pokemon until endgame, animations for all of the pokemon, the new camera perspective, etc, Black and White feel really fresh and awesome.
-
Best deal I saw on the eBayz was $42. I can wait.
Sorry QQ I is sick.
I will not be participting at my usual speed of rant.
I did just watch that Goon vid someone posted and
it
is
AMAZING!
Also still no Pokemanz…
-
Did you check out the Old Republic trailers?
-
Just watched em all! Effin AMAZING! Best 3D ive seen since ROBOT at the start of Onimusha 3!
-
-
There’s something weird about the animations used, they don’t quite seem to fit in the 3d space properly, and everything seems kind of weightless.
Sorry, I have to ruin all 3d work, ever since I re-watched the Warcraft 3 ones and realised how dated they were.
-
Yeah, no , yeah.
These are PS2 era movies, That was as shmick as it got back then.
I more mean I haven’t been so impressed since then.
-

I just tried purchasing and downloading a game from Games for Windows Marketplace and it’s a bad experience. Need help here :\ I got purchased downloaded and installed the game Where’s Waldo, then when I try to play it the game window freeze, and a popup says there’s a runtime error and it forces the game to close. Any solutions? I’ve tried uninstalling then reinstalling but it doesn’t work.
-
tried running in compatibility mode for a lesser operating system?
-
As welbot said, try compatibility mode. Also try right-click then run as administrator – this seems to fix an unholy number of problems in Windows 7.
Other than that, I can only say ‘don’t ever use Games for Windows Live ever again’. It is an absolutely horrendous client.
-
If you’ve ever gotten W40K: Dawn of War 2, you will understand the true horror, you need to be connected to Steam AND Games for Windows Live just to play campaign as well as everything else… I mean WHY!? It’s just pointless, I have no idea why MS decided to try and take on Steam like that, too little too late I would’ve said
-
Yeah, DoW2 was a nightmare to connect. Especially when Games for Windows Live went down for a day or two.
I heard that the new expansion only uses Steam.
-
Ahhh! This is excellent news if that is accurate 🙂
-
-
-
-
There’s a Where’s Waldo game?
-
Considering the way Microsoft does things I would sooner make my own games out of rusty scrap metal than use Games For Windows Live. It would probably be less painful.
-
shall try those methods when i get home, hope it’ll fix the issue otherwise i need to try get a refund from microsoft.. I want to find Waldo on my PC!!
-
I have both compatibility mode turned on and run as administrator but the game still fails to load and the runtime error message still pops up. 🙁 I wonder if it’s anything to do with the graphics card.
-
I still can’t believe, via Twitter via Mark, that Elly says Strokes is for old people. As I sit here listening to them, recalling how breathtakingly amazing they were at Splendour, I say to you…
Only people with good taste in music like the Strokes! (*bad-dum-tish*!)
-
Cmoooooon, I want a reaction! It’s no fun without a reaaaaaactiooooon 🙁
-
I’m not sure about that, I’m having plenty of fun with your reaction to the lack of reaction.
-
She’s gone home for the day! I’ll be sure to tell her in the morning! She’s worried everyone’s angry at her. Bless!
-
We’re not mad, we’re just very disappointed in her.
-
Haha, that was my first thought too! Calling Strokes old people music… tres disappointing.
-
Disappointing… even though it’s true?!
(yeah, I went there)
Julian’s alright, but The Strokes don’t do much for me 😡
-
Blasphemy! Julian’s solo effort was laaaaaaaaaaame. Seeing The Strokes live is truly a thing to behold. I didn’t expect it to be at all, but seeing them at Splendour is easily one of the best concerts I’ve seen.
-
-
-
Wasn’t it always worse when your parents said that.
-
One time, when y parents said that, I laughed.
I seem to have very little connection with my parents, I guess that’s what I get for being a disappointment.
-
I can never be angry at her 🙁
When Elly goes silent you know the damage is done.
Ughh, silly internet, why do you hate me so?
I just had my power cut off, lasted a bit over an hour, but I knew it was happening, so it was just kind of annoying, it comes back on, I go to log into facebook, and my network appears to be compromised, as the login page starts giving out a fake certificate. Lame.
Equally bad, I was having problems with M&M, so I cleared my browser cache, and I use the facebook connect to play it, so now I’m locked out of my city, when I probably have enough to start building the final stage of my oven.
Sometimes, I hate technology.
-
Is the date on your PC right?
Just set mine back a few years, and have duplicated the results of your error…I think, Google chrome says that the security certificate is not yet valid.
So if you just set the time and date on your PC back to 2011, it should start working for you again-
My date is accurate, it’s getting a certificate from a different website. Apparently the site hosts a lot of things, and there are noted examples of this occurring on Facebook, particularly from external sites using the connect system.
Next step is to confirm that it’s network based, where I just need to check it on another computer, good thing I have two in my room…
-
-
Let me know if you need something done in M&M….
-
If you can just send all the wood and ore from other cities to Blagdom, and if any of them have hit the max for a rare, just sell off ten of it.
Thanks.
-
-
Hmm fixed Facebook, either through religious purging, or the forcing of HTTPS, but M&M still won’t load. Tried it on a different computer, and it doesn’t work there. So I’m still having network problems. I blame IPv4(this is what’s known as irrational, just to clarify).
do u guys get that creepy feeling when you are watching older films, knowing that everyone involved has likely to have passed away already? It gives me an unreal sense of detachment..
-
I feel that way about the animals.
Beethoven is DEAD! [sob]
-
animals? Beethoven? what..?!
-
Oh for God’s sake, you’re too young to remember this movie, aren’t you…
[sob]
http://www.bolgernow.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/beethoven-the-dog-movie.jpg
-
I’m not too young! I loved the series!
-
YES!
(But Beethoven is dead now)
[sob]
-
Yeah.,… 🙁 and all those piranha’s in Piranha. Also, Jaws.
But that friggen kangaroo in Kangaroo Jack, hope he’s been made into a squishy testicular purse.
-
-
-
I feel old now.
Git offa my lawn!
-
No, but dammit, now I will.
I’ll be watching MacGyver (2PM on 11!)from now on and I’ll be like “Hey look, Dana Elcar? Oh he’s dead. Hey look, Don S Davis. Also dead. Richard Dean Anderson? Not dead, but old and kind of fat. Dammit, this is depressing.”
You have ruined MacGyver for me. ='(
-
I hope you’re watching JAG too.
When I was still on holidays, those were the best two hours of my day.
It’s almost jarring. I like watching a lot of older Carry Grant and RatPack films. It’s especially wierd if the film is in colour. I’m not sure why, but that, for some reason, makes me feel everyone is still alive. I have to remind myself that some aren’t… :\
I feel that way about “I Dream of Jeannie”.
I watch it and think “Barbara Eden is so hot!” but then realise “Damn she’s 76!”
“…”
“… I’d still tap that.”
-
/me spits out the mouse…
-
Not a fan of I Dream of Jeannie?
-
I’d have hit that then… I’d pass now though.
Although, with these new hip replacements; you can just pop them right out.
-
-
I dunno, if I’m watching an older film it’s generally because it’s been recommended 100 times over and is pretty much gonna be awesome, so I’m usually into the story and characters enough to not think about who are the real people acting the characters. Saw The apartment for the first time the other day and didn’t think of it til the end… but even then I was just sad that I didn’t realise how great Jack Lemmon was sooner. Then followed by a great happines that there’s plenty of his back catalogue to catch up on, and a chance to appreciate his great career. It’s nice in that it’s there to remember them by really, it’s their legacy.
watching more of that Yogcast mincraft series. Anyone else find the auto adjust for the resolution on youtube when you go in and out of full screen really annoying?
I just let it load the full video, then exited full screen only to have it abandon the 720p video already loaded, to load the 360p, now I’m making it load 720 again. (not that there is really much point to 720p in a minecraft vid…)
-
Mine switches to 480P when I got to fullscreen, but doesn’t change if I make it smaller, so I don’t know what you’re doing (or what I’m doing).
-
It changes down if you watch somethine thats one a play list and automaticaly plays the next video (i.e. Yogcaust) if you had it in full screen when you started the current video, and then exit full screen.
-
I hadn’t noticed that, but I’m pretty unobservant.
On a slightly related note, has anyone else had youtube videos displaying off centre, or just not had the video appear lately? Or is it just me?
-
-
same for me, I believe you can go to settings if you’re logged in, you can choose your preferences for what resolution you prefer videos to be loaded in & what happens in fullscreen.
-
Just watched Predators…why didn’t this movie get more love? It’s the best Predator flic since predator!
-
I actually really enjoyed the movie. Didn’t understand the hate. The predator dogs were completely stupid, but everything else was solid.
-
How were they Predator dogs? They were just alien dogs weren’t they??
-
I acutaly liked it to. It wasn’t exactly oscar material but it was exaclty what you’d expect to see from an action/horror. Or what I expect to see anyway.
-
-
None of the characters seemed important to me at all, and the main guy… seriously that voice sounds like such a forced attempt at being badass but apparently he always sounds like that?
In the first predator I felt more for the guys that died, since they were more a squad that knew each other, but in this movie they were all just a bunch of random nobodies and their deaths seemed meaningless.
Yes also agree, the predator dogs were just a shit addition. Nothing beats the first predator, nothing does.
-
You took it way too seriously. You weren’t meant to care. Everyone was an arsehole.
-
-
Yay!!! Jimu got to watch a movie 🙂
-
YAY!
-
-
Crazy Morpheus is crazy.
-
No comment. Except… that the movie was a pile of giant poop that I nearly walked out of in the first half hour it was so grating.
‘Hey, who are you!?’ ‘I’m like… a badass’ ‘Yeah, me too.’ (few hours go by of this) ‘I’m like, so badass, that I’m going to try and stop you… for no good reason at all. I’m like, a serial killer or something’. (cue really bad imitation of Arnie, of which the director is so arrogant as to think he can make his predator ‘more badass’ than the original).
Ok, I guess I did have some comments after all.
-
wHY IS IT ok FOR aRNIE?
-
Did anyone see the Machinima videos on the History of ID games?
shall I go to town hall by myself for the wikileaks public forum? it starts at 6:30pm
-
Who’s going to be there? I’d vote yes 🙂
Alright Batguy, I’ve chosen a track, Oakmont Valley: Ultimately Open
My time: 1:41.68
-
OK I’ll give it a try and report back tomorrow.
-
Wait…you’ll be playing it all night!?
nnnnnnnnnnnnNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
-
I just got 1:42.60 – I screwed up the second super-drift and went in the dirt a bit 🙁 then bumped a wall o.O
Impressive time there, lambo. Can Batguy beat it? Stay tune for tomorrow’s TAY!
-
Good Lord… the pressure…
-
No pressure, I can’t beat 1:48. I got the exact time needed for gold, and that’s all I need.
Now I just need to convince more people to play Starcraft 2, then I’ll be able to temporarily prove my superiority.
Maybe.
-
Starcraft 2 is on my list of need-to-buy games.
I doubt you have an superiority to prove, RTSs are one of my specialities 😛
-
-
-
OMG, just spent over an hour on Nier trying to catch the stupid shaman fish. Eventually looked up a walkthrough and discovered that when the guy who tells you how to catch is says stand on the beach, he’s not talking about the beach he’s next to but an completely unrelated and unhitned at beach that I’d never been to nor had any apparent cause to go to before.
-
I did the same thing, I’m pretty sure the X on your map appears to tell you where to go, I just ignored it.
-
Lol, it probably did. I never even thought to look. Guy standing by the beack says fish from the beach. I fish from the beach.
I’ll have to pay more attention to the map next time i get stuck.
-
HA HA
I did that too. Everyone misses the X, and it’s so obvious! You spend the whole game following the X.
-
-
Yep. The ‘x’ did indeed mark the spot.
On a related note of Nier, I’ve just been everywhere I could go, looking for something someone asked me for only to find out when I finally caved and looked at a walkthrough that I actually can’t get it yet. Why give me the quest now then? What a waste of time. Grr.
-
I read somewhere that all quests are pointless. None give you anything you couldn’t easily find somewhere else. Part of the meta game commentary perhaps…
-
I hated when it gave you the “kill the boar” quest. I was level 3 or 4, and I decided, pahh, I can take it. Eventually I did, but it was pretty stupid, was like a 5-10 minute fight, where all I did was abuse how the boar charged. Then I found out that you should be like, level 10 or something to do it properly…
-
I did the same thin on that one yesterday. Just circled around him really close and rolled every time he charged.
just on my way back from the fishing trip and found a shade with much the same problem. I spent 10 min kiting him down the red and then he 1 hit me and it was all for nothing.
-
I hated that Shade. Just before the end of the first act (purely by chance) I went past it, and I enjoyed destroying it, and EVERYTHING IT LOVED!
-
-
And when you finally kill the boar it’s back again next time you venture into the Northern plains. And the villager who wanted it gone doesn’t even seem to care. 😛
-
I’m telling you it’s meta game commentary
-
-
Don’t you just love that
Man just heard about Nate Dogg. He was truly amazing. I can’t help but feel that as a hip hop fan a disproportionate amount of the artists I grew up listening to have passed away. I can’t listen to my iPod for more than 10 minutes without listening to a dead rapper.
Kinda sad really.
Anyway RIP. I had not been up to date but apparently he had multiple strokes since 2007 so could not walk or talk recently. He will be missed.
Did anyone else see the gameplay trailer for Batman Arkham City. Going to be so good.
Hello, ladies (lady?) and gentlemen.
I seem to have started a little gaming tournament. It is in Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, so if you don’t own it, you need to get your sorry little self off the couch(or wheelie-chair) and buy it NOW!
This tournament is cross-platform, it doesn’t matter whether you have the game on PC, Xbox 360 or PS3 (Wii versions are banned from this tournament though :P).
The event we’ll be racing on is Oakmont Valley: Ultimately Open
Just leave a reply with your time, so we can see who is the ultimate racer!
Prize: Unfortunately, we have no prize(except for our never-ending respect), but if you win, you at least deserve to have Batguy’s iPod 😛
Well, get racing!
-
CURSE YOU FACEBOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s me lamboman007 if you didn’t already know… -
My best time: 1:39.60
-
You’re not going to believe it – my best time so far is 1:39.68!
I can definitely do better because I glanced a car on the final stretch of that run.
Nice and close though! Bonus points for picking a track that I had to waste most of my evening trying to unlock before I could race on it 😛
-
Man that is close! I can do better too though(just laying on more pressure for you 😛
Sorry about the track choice…
-
-
Hot damn! That’s a whole 3 seconds faster than my current best!
I might be able to have another shot this afternoon…
-
-
sorry, I have Shift but that is it! Never played that one but i would have joined in.
-
Please don’t apologise, this is some of the best news I’ve heard all day 😛
More chances of success for me! 😀
You can just sit in the corner and play your Trials HD game till your thumbs fall off 😛
-
Oh man, you guys talk so much. It’s hard to follow while I’m at uni(I just got back). I think I’ll just sleep and have a 4 day weekend.
Oh look, Page 5!
-
Gahhh!! NotR, he scorez the thunderz on Page 5!!! Then sleeps!!!
-
U Jelly?
-
He’s totes Jelly.
-
-
Anyway, I thought you were supposed to be my tamagotchi?
-
Damn, I forgot! Me and my ageing brian…
-

2 videos for you aural pleasure, to make up for what I posted earlier.
Firstly: Super Mario theme tune A Capella: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTB-P5Bt3_Q&feature=feedlik
Secondly: A Capella John Williams Mashup, using lyrics relating to Star Wars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk5_OSsawz4&feature=feedlik
-
*dies of awesomeness*
That John Williams A Capella is possibly the best thing I’ve ever seen.
-
*dies of awesomeness*
That John Williams A Capella is possibly the best thing I’ve ever seen.
I have no words.
-
You have no words? Probably because you spent them all on writing two nearly identical comments 😛

Don’t know what happened there 🙁
It was all… and I was like.. and it did… *flails*
-
-
Long, Time ago. Far, far away.
Long, Time ago. Far, far away.
Kiss a wookie, kick a droid,
Fly the falcon, through an asteroid!*cough*
Sorry, that’s my favourite part.
-
Lollies! I love me some good a capella, but this took the cake and eated it.
-
-
Hey Mark,
Just wanted to say a big thanks for your answers in the ‘ask me stuff’ post. I always get back and read your answers but often don’t thank you for the time and thought put in.
I was a bit mischievous last night, instead of getting ahead on my Buttercup homework like I’d planned, I went and played Pokemon White for a while.
Friday’s post is a non-Buttercup post anyhow, and it’s pretty much finished, so I wasn’t feeling too pressured to get stuff done.
Also, my PS3 controller was on the end of the coffee table furthest from me and my DS was right next to me.
Anyhow, why does the fire starter evolve into a fire/fighting type again? The whole “firefighter” pun was a lot more amusing the first two times and it was simply better when you had something as awesome as Blaziken.
So I went with Snivy.
-
Yeah, seriously, Blaziken is a pretty cool guy who doesn’t afraid of anything, but I guess he was so cool they felt like they needed to clone him again. :\
Personally, favourite started would be Piplup. Empoleon’s typing was just great. They really need to play around with the starter’s typing more. Fire/Fighting and Water/Steel worked out pretty great, so just go a little crazy, GameFreak. I remember when B/W was just announced, and there was talk that even a Dark, Psychic, Fighting starter trio would be a welcome change from the standard Grass, Fire, Water.-
In diamond, I picked the grass starter simply so I could call it A’Tuin.
Seriously though, they are getting really lazy with the starters. Would it be so hard to work in a little variety?
-
-
I couldn’t decide, basically picked Sinvy at random.
Where’s everyone?
I’m bored in class…
-
I’m in class too!
*high-five*
-
Same here, except I’m doing it through Open University!
i-hi-five! http://www.topcultured.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/internet-high-five.jpg
-
-
I’m at work desperately trying to think of things other than work to do right now.
-
At work, trying to figure out this awesome-to-use but hard-to-master piece of software… really annoying especially when guides mislead you to “Go here” that doesn’t even exist! lol
Didn’t have time to play anything at all since yesterday was my weekly ten-pin bowling night 😛
-
I was sleeping until 1 minute ago. I really suck at this.
-
Lucky! I wish I was sleeping right now – I’ve got some stupid cold/flu/chest infection dealie at the moment. I’d be at home if I wasn’t taking a maths tutorial at uni – it wouldn’t be right for me to skip the first one (besides, I wouldn’t get payed :P).
-
-
Technically, I should be in class now. Could not be bothered, at all. It’s only 2 lectures, I’ll live.
-
That’s what I was like, except it was more “I only have 3 lectures and a tutorial today, I can skip it.”
-
Thats it. I’m going to the Union of Land Flatteners, you and your grandiose buildings! My hands are blistered, my eye’s filled with cobbles, I have copious amounts of gravel in my crack, and what do you do??? SLEEP IN!!!!
-
Damn right, and because I’m fothermucking Michelangelo, I’m going to get drunk tonight, and then spiral into a pit of depression. Bitchez.
-
-
-
-
I’m Irish, and currently making ritual offerings to the patron saint of binge drinking.
-
I’m vaguely Irish (my first name is Irish in origin… and some ancestors were Irish), but I plan to wait ’til tonight to start worshipping the god of Binge Drinking (I’m 19, he’s a god to me).
My main hope is that I can get my friend Paddy to come out tonight, because then he’s almost certain to pick up, which would be hilarious.
I mean what?
-
Stumbled across a site created by a university in New Zealand – http://www.japanquakemap.com/
Puts some things in perspective and… wow :/
-
Yeah, that was an amazing few minutes. The extent of the main MW 9.0 quake was incredible, and disturbing.
So I took your advice dawdle and wrote a new post.
SYDNEY KOTAKU READERS MEETUP –
WHEN – Saturday, 2nd April
WHAT – Lunch
WHERE – City (its a central location I suppose). Anybody got any suggestions of places to eat?
WHO – Everybody’s invited!
There. It’s no longer a myth! IT’S FINALLY HAPPENING!!
-
Pub lunch?
-
There you are! The Strokes are awesome, if liking them is wrong then I don’t want to be right.
That is all.
-
I told Mark that he’s an old man for liking them. So you must be be an old man too 😉
-
If liking them makes me old, then I don’t want to be young!
-
-
-
-
Aww, two weeks too early for me. I’ll be in Sydney on the 16th.
-
I don’t think I could make the trip down to Sydney during my lunch break, so you kids have fun.
-
Bavarian Bier Cafe.
That is all.
-
YAY!!! *throws confetti*
I’m okay with any venue. -
Strange and I chatted about a Brisbane meeting just yesterday actually. So since there’s already a thread about it, how about we make a Bris meet too? So far, we know there’s 3 of us on the southside, but how many northerners would there be interested in coming along to a meet? This would no doubt influence the choice of meeting place.
I would propose perhaps the same day as the Sydney guys for consistency and less confusion.
Any takers?-
Oooo… mebe? Yes? I don’t know! I’m such a hermit, I’d be shy 🙁
-
We’re all gonna be a bit shy at first I think. It’s a problems with us geeky indoor types 😉 At least if there’s a group, there shouldn’t be too many awkward silince moments 😉
-
I’m a hermit too, so you wouldn’t be alone in your shyness. Maybe we could have a meet-up where no-one’s allowed to talk. 😛
-
Haha, where’s that? The library?
-
I’m at the CBD lib almost everyday at lunchish!
-
nerd.
-
-
-
How about the library? 😛
-
Here’s a crazy idea for you Sydneyists, you all pack a hip flask (optional) and meet up at a game store, then do a game store crawl together. I did a similar thing with a bunch of forum friends of tropical fish shops. The familiar surroundings kept the conversation flowing easily. 😀
-
Am I one of the three known Southsiders? Because if I’m not you may have to revise your numbers.
Also, a meetup could be fun.
-
No I was not aware of your being on the southside aswell, so that’s 4!
Too bad you didn’t do that while I was up at Thornlands last year in November while I was out on holiday, I would’ve tried to get there. Ah well, I’m stuck in Melbourne now for a long time 😛
I am cool with the date for the moment. Hope to make it.
I suggest that we make it somewhere that at least has a large TV and will let us bring concoles/games!!! we have to be playing games AND drinking for this??? Anyone know a place where this can happen.. or do we just use our super awesome powers to make someone let us???
-
Umm, I don’t know if you guys can remember it, but I mentioned it a couple of months ago that someone DID plug in a console to one of the large LCD screens at our uni library and played. It was pretty late though. I don’t think it’ll work for us though :p I do agree our meetup needs to have some element of gaming in it, so let’s figure something out. : )
-
How about a visit to good ol’ city hunter afterwards… heh heh heh.
-
Elly don’t pick of sughly for liking the strokes they aren’t old people music, ask qumulys I bet he wouldn’t like them.
Bazinga
-
I’m as old as Q-bo and I like the strokes. I dig them cos they really have a vibe reminiscent of Thin Lizzy, and damn.. they kick ass!! 😉 Guess that makes me seem really old 😐
-
Dude love the stokes and julian casblancas particularly has a very awesome and individual vocal style.
-
Elly Elly Elly….
I’ll forgive her though, but, sheesh…!Also, I’m not old! Why does everyone keep saying that??? Although, I was born when Star Wars first hit the big screens!
-
That makes you about a gazillion in internet years.
-
-
-
Yeah! Wait… what?
-
While we’re on the subject, love this track in particular from Angles – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPRaG7xouwE
This on’s pretty awesome too – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPRyrL3mMms
-
…I am also a Machu Picchu fan. Interesting new thing they have going on with this one – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJdE_Ii86BI

With all the talk about RC adn R18+ issues, I am wondering, how many of you have played an RC game. I am interested in how you got it and what made you get it etc etc.
For me, I have got a few.
Blitz the league 360
I had been a fan of the original games on PS1 so when i heard about this i imported this immedaitely
Narc xbox
Received a dodgy copy and only played it because is was RC. Was fun but would not have paid for it.
L4D2 360
Only got this when i could secure an unedited version. I dont even know what was removed but I want a crazy zombie game to be just that… as the creators intended
50 Cent: Bulletproof xbox
This game was rubbish, I only played the tutorial and even then i was bored.. but i played it just to say i had. *Sticks middle finger up to RC status.
Marc Ecko’s Contents under pressure xbox
As a fan of hip hop music and culture, i really wanted to play this game. I got a dodgy copy of it because i could not get it anywhere else. unfortunatately the copy i got itself had issues so could not get past a certain point. I did at least like the concept of this game and would have considered a purchase if it was any good.
Reservoir Dogs xbox
Again, only played this because is was RC. It was ok for its time but not being a fan of the movie, no big impact for me.
Wondering what your experiences were with RC games.
Check out the full list here:

I have Left 4 Dead 2 for pc.
My dad picked it up while he was in the US, got given to me as a birthday present. In terms of what was cut for the Aussie version, it’s pretty much everything. The dismemberment is gone, bodies fade a few seconds after dying, and when pipe bombs go off, the zombies just disappear. Strangely, the boomers in the opening sequence, when they’re heading down the elevator, were also removed. -
50 Cent: Bulletproof wasn’t banned, got the special edition from EB on release. Not that bad a game actually.
I’ve got Getting Up : Special Edition for PS2, and well worth playing, specially from a hip hop fans perspective.
Both on PS2, you can borrow if you like…..-
“Banned because of high impact violence and cruelty. A censored version was later released”
OK, I must have got the uncut version then i assume…
Also gave my PS2 to the young brother in law but thanks anyway…
-
Seriously Mark… with all the tweets you tweet, how have you not become this man? http://english.pravda.ru/images/photo/9/3/0/24930.jpeg
-
OMG! Hahahahahahaha!
It’s true. All I talk about is food.
-
On a related note, I think I’m noticing a link between poor Kotaku activity and high Twitter activity (articles too hard to write?)
So, get back to work!
-
HAPPY ST. PATS DAY, EVERYONE!!
In the spirit of the day, i’d like to nominate my dad, Shamus, for community Kudos this week. He may not participate in our chats, but he loves his 360 and just got featured on Triple M’s St. Pats page today with Mieke Buchan for this AWESOME Effort!!!

*wipes tear from eye* So so proud… A true Cleary!
Every year him and his work mates head out for a BIG Irish Breakie, and this year he so happened to attract the attention of Triple M… i can’t seem to work out why… lol…
-
Woooooot Dad for KUDOS!!!
I vote send him socks, or undies, or a tie. -
Nice work by the old man.
Anyone else now going through Loops photos…..-

Wait… that doesn’t sound right… i had pens inside me… wait… that’s not right either..

Dammit… that’s not it EITHER!

Some cool T-Shirt stuff. How did you convince the Mrs to pose with the games consoles…. 😉
-
Are you kidding me? I would have to PAY bee to get her to do that… But our money is pooled and she is too smart to fall for the old “i’ll give you $500” trick when the money all comes from the same place…
*sigh*
Plus she has this HORRIBLY ANNOYING thing called self respect… i mean what the HELL is that ANYWAY?!?!
-
-
Moar lolcats plz. Kthnxbye.
-
Dark Angels! Yay!

^_^
-
-
Ok, this guy is damn good. FatShady will love him, I promise… If not, I’ll smack him live on a webcam.
-
Rap spam… sorry, this guy is awesome unreal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBzR0-j0O0o&feature=related
And this one, he (somehow) managed to score the real julian assange…
-
They are pretty cool. The Assange one is funny. I’m trying to work out what beats he used.
I know “Fight Music” was the third one…-
I’d watch the news every night if this guy did it.
-
-
The Julian Assange part had me in tears.
Thanks Doctor. He steps in like
Marsellus Wallace & just
dominates.and Julian Assange is more
Public Enemy than
Chuck D & Flavor Flav
combined-!Remember to follow the red fox.
Love, Plainview.

-
No Youtubes at work… tonite!
-
Your job, its broken! Time to find a new one!
-
Yeah, join Q-bo as a completely unpaid minion of the ambitious minecrafter!
-
-
Our web gateway sucks at work so I just use my phone for the youtubez. Can’t you just do that?
Or maybe you’re being … … responsible at work?
-
I usually do mate but super busy. I get no where near as much time on this site. Not like the good old days. I remember when this was all orange groves… I used to wear an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time….
See, I have to rush multiple jokes that become less awesome.. well, back to work.
-
I’m guessing you couldn’t get white onions, because of the war?
-
-
-
If only we had more turtle fences.
-
I demand more turtle fences now!
Also, I saw a turtle on the road last week!
With there slack attitude to moving around, its a wonder more turtles aren’t covered in ads for tampons or graffiti.
Me and Ben White want to make some ‘Chai’ related t-shirts with awesome slogans.
Here are some of our ideas.
“If at first you don’t succeed – chai, chai again.”
“Let sleeping dogs Chai”
“Chai-athlete”
“Chai Hard With a Vengeance”
“Live and let Chai”
Try and tell me these aren’t gold ideas.
-
What’s “Chai”??
-
i feel like “chai”ming in with a few
suggestions of my own. -
You don’t know the power of the dark chai!
-
Marty McChai! Time Traveller extraordinaire!
-
Ready to Chai? (Biggie album)
Get Rich or Chai Trying
Live Free or Chai Hard (Chai Hard 4.0)
Lets Chai Away-
Chai Club.
Chai Club Rules

“Say good-Chai to your two best friends, and I don’t mean your pals in the Winnebago”
-
These puns, they’re just so chai-ldish.
-
I endorse this idea..
In fact… i would like to produce some of these ideas…
-
Mr Loops – I finally received your DS. Will send ASAP.
-
Although to be honest – I’m thinking about sending it to your Dad.
-
I don’t blame you.
I’d much preffer you send him a DSi than something like a PSP, anyway… i mean he’d just fill it with porn and Irish Folk Music…
…Then i’d be jealous because bee won’t let me have Porn OR Irish folk music on mine…
-
-
Oh.. that’s right.. change the subject.. i understand.. you don’t your chaisome ideas handled my a amature like me… i get it.. *sniff* *sulk*
LOL.
Awesome mate, that’s FANTASTIC news – thanks so much 😀
Will my zombie and syringe be with it? 😀
-
-
-
Aaaaahhhh! A monster! Chai away little duckling! Chai away!(What the..? Where did that come from?)
I think I’ll go play some Half Chai-fe 2…or maybe Chai-sis 2 MP Demo…or maybe watch Chai-rates of the Caribbean…Annoying Lamboman: Hey Q-bo, hey hey Q-bo, Q-bo hey, hey Q-bo
Qumulys: What?
Annoying Lamboman: Chai-fe!
😛
As chai as a kite?
Chai five?
I answer to a chai-er order?
Maybe not as easy off the tongue.
-
Misplaced reply 🙁
-
At least you chai-ed 🙂
-
that is such a Chai-Man Mao thing to say!
-
Well, I’ve effectively cleared my desk, definitely for the afternoon and I don’t expect much to come in tomorrow either. This means I get to kick back and play some Tiny Wings.
Yay.
Hey JM2, my network has completely died, and I can’t access M&M at all, so would you be able to take over for me until I can get it fixed? For now, I’d like owrk on the level 5 oven started ASAP, and uhh, that’s about all.
-
No worries mate. Jumped on yesterday and checked/did a few things for you. Allowed for the fact you might not get on, but will go on again tonight :)I think oven will be good to go tonight….
It arrived…
-
DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNN
-
Yay!!
Sent you an email today….
Hope you feeling better, sure that Pokemon will help. -
See you in a week…
-
Where you going Jimu? If I’m too late – catch ye versace.
-
He’s going to travel across the land, searching far and wide…
-
Best reply ever? 😀
-
This is full of win.
-
Teaching Pokemon the power that’s inside?
-
-
-
Ozgameshop, I am getting disappoint. DA2 hasn’t arrived yet :'(
Someone else ordered through them (Jimu? James Mac?) – has it arrived?
-
Mine’s not here yet either. I’m beginning to think it won’t be here until the middle of next week…
-
Mine was dispatched on the 9th, and it’s only been 8 or 9 working days since then… so you may be right 🙁
-
-
My order was sent 2 weeks ago and it has not arrived yet 🙁
I really hope it comes today. -
I waited 14 days for the pokemanz! Expect the same with DA2…
-
I ordered Homefront… so I haven’t recieved it yet.
I got bored, in between playing Minecraft and NFS:HP, so I made this! http://lcsociety.enjin.com/
It’s got a forum for our message board, so we don’t have to go traipsing across the wilderness, just to find out the latest on FatShady’s server. Also, I’ll be running a NFS:HP tournament on there next week, so I don’t clog up TAY, I’ll post the top three players for each day here though.
Does that sound like a good idea?
It’s Friday, so that means new content is up on my website.
This time, I’ve written something about Trauma Center. Something that could probably be considered a review.
On a barely related note, Screw Attack put up a top ten list of worst doctors in video games. Number one was “you” because of Trauma Center. I object to that, I S ranked all but 3 missions in that game, I’m not a bad doctor I’m a master surgeon!
-
I dunno, I’ve let my fair share of patients die on that operating table.
-
I’ll admit, I have sliced a few patients up simply because there was no retry option.
But only because I was trying to be a Master Surgeon, they were expendable losses!
-
Alright Qumulys, the Leather Cap Society Council(of which I am currently the only member) has decided that because of your unmanliness in admitting you needed to wear band-aids while playing a game, you must pass a few challenges before you can regain your “Manly” status.
Challenge 1: Look at this image for 1 minute without blinking http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1673597/1269068825969.jpg
Challenge 2: Play Mincraft Single-player on hard difficulty for three minecraft nights, with no shelters, just a leather cap and a wooden sword, and without dying.
Once you pass these challenges, you may reclaim your “Manly” title.
-
Joined now a member. Awesome site lambo. Kudo’s to you.
-
Thanks 😀
-
-
lol! he’s an average asian! great pic!!!
-
*note: I did not make that picture 😛
-
-
1. New windows background
2. About to try that challenge!
*removes bandaid, which I might add was only a temporary measure to get me through Trials, but indeed has brought much shame on the LCS*-
Day 1. Iceland. Fudge.
Trekked North in search of some willing wood and steeds.
Eventually the sight of plantlife unfurled before me, feeling naked I hastily cubed some flora. My nimble wrists then crafted a mighty fine workbench and Chester my wooden sword was born.
Chester and I then set of, with naught but rump in my mind.
Then, I saw movement, a beasty! I saunter over with Chester at my side but am disappointed to find the beasty was in fact a piggy in a tree. Not sure what he was trying to do, I figured a pig building a tree house was out of order and thus I made him a fenced pig pen. Her name is Baconda, and if worse comes to worse, her sacrifice to this woodsman would be in need of a last grasp at life.-
Day 1 – Afternoon
My nerves are beginning to become a little frazzled as I find the seeking of beef a great challenge. The sun is racing towards to horizon, and the faint snort of Baconda is the only reassuring sound. Then, I find them, a heard of 5 bovine. I grin at Chester and he greats the Spice Girls with gleeful hack-slashery. When Mel C(ow) finally falls, a bevy of leather is mine and I begin the race of man against sun back to my crafting table.
With moments to space, I fashion the dandiest Leather Cap you’ve ever seen, and to a fanfare of trumpets it becomes one with my noggin and at last, I am a man, for now at least.
I turn and see that old foe Lunar raise dragging his evils with him.
I grip my Chester tightly.-
Night 1.
*to video cam
I’m cold, I’m hungry and I’m scared. I love you Mum, I love you Dad.
The warmth of an earth shelter would be so nice right now. It seemed that Armageddon has arrived as a flock of creepers surround me. To my right 4 zombies, Chester and I take them on, as I poke my Chester into one of those fiends the hiss of death has my turning sharply, but its too late. The explosion warps my vision, the smell of sulpher stings my cavities as I make a run for it.
When I think I’m safe, I look down to see I have lost 4 hearts. I fondly remember how squishy Baconda is, but that thought leaves me when the rattles of bones and thunnnngggkk sound comes out of the dark.
An arrow wedges into my shoulder and something bites me. It’s now, I start crying just a tad, no wait, I mean, I had some meat-pie in my eye… -
Night 1 cont.
My very manly stack of vertical dirt thrusts upwards like a seed bursting through the soil. I look down and see Chester has lost his nerves somewhat, and is in a trembling fit. I cuddle him with both hands, but still he shakes. Things are looking bleak, I’m down to one lousy heart. Why oh why did Baconda have to be so adorably cute??
My red eye’s bead at the moon, willing it back down to ground. But, its then that I must have fallen asleep…*dream sequence….
The squelch of a spider cuts through the moaning zombies. I madly swing Chester, cutting the air to ribbons to ward him away, but this ghoul has ascended to tree top level, and is now but a mere leap away. I check my leather cap, its still there, give me courage I ask of it. The spider leaps at me, I parry like a office worker pressing a lift button. But its no good, my screen flickers red… My leather cap, is gone.
*reapplies a fresh band-air.
-
band AID!
gah!
cant even spell!
-
-
-
Listening to “old man music” ™. I like it.
-
Yes, If you like the strokes, You will like julian casablancas solo work its really good. Check it out
-
I already have. It is also good. And like all of the Strokes’ album, it is also very short!
-
-
I’m gonna defend Elly here and say it is definitely the kind of music my dad would listen to.
My dad is awesome but still fairly old.-
And what, pray tell, do young people listen to?
-
Lots of stuff, much of it pretty average.
It just has that kind of sound reminiscent of pop music in the 80s or earlier and the 80s is now old in terms of culture.-
Buuuut The Strokes came out around late nighties/early noughties, and the electronic and synth thing is a new sound for them, and something that’s been influencing heaps of artists recently since bands like MGMT made it popular a few years back.

-
This too apparently (13 million hits?! What the hell…) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0&feature=youtu.be
-
We we we we so excited!
Tomorrow is Saturday and Sunday comes afterwards!
-
LOL! A friend drew my attention to this abomination yesterday, but as a result I woke up today with it stuck in my head. Maybe because subconsciously I I I so excited it’s Friday?
-
-
What the..? That’s so bad, it’s not even funny…
I found someone new to hate on though 😛
Anyway, I can’t wait till that time in the future when teens-young adults say that Justin Bieber’s music is for old people 😛 -
That voice… it just grates, so bad. It seems to be in this register designed specifically for human suffering and torture, possibly one that delivers a sound that undeveloped teen ears cannot hear.
-
-
Loving it! Angles is tres cool, really impressed. ‘Games’ in particular is such an awesome song.
One of the ads(usually whatever’s supposed to be at the bottom of the page) has been breaking Kotaku for me since yesterday.
It doesn’t matter which browser I use, it just won’t load and I have to refresh the page and cross my fingers for a different set of ads. 🙁
-
Mozilla Firefox w/ adblock plus add-on FTW! 🙂
-
But Adblock on Kotaku means no monies for them, meaning no more Kotaku 🙁
-
Well I only use it when ads like the one Strange mentioned impact my browsing capacity
-
-
-
It’s the stupid telstra one.. i emailed Mark about it and he’s forwarded it on to the web team 🙂
-
Telstra? This doesn’t surprise me. When I used to use them if you clicked on ‘Log In’ you’d be taken to a page that said “You need to be logged in to view this page, please log in.” 😛
-
Would you look at that! Page 6, right beside me!
-
Evidently I’m blind 😛
Hello Page 6!
-
HAHA Strange caught you undone! I’m giving all yor thunderz to her nowz! mwhahahah!
My welcoming gift to page 6.

This is highly cute and all, BUT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER ON TUESDAY!!!!!!!
-
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! THE CUTENESS! THE CUTENESS!! CAN’T UNSEE!! CAN’T UNSEE!!!!!
-
Wait, what was on Tuesday?
-
Nine Pictures Of Puppies Yawning
Because it’s Tuesday and you’d be miserable without this:its kinda the heading.. 😛
-
-
-
Please add a hearty “WAAZZZZUUUUUPPP!!!” with every one of those pictures
I should really shop checking the page views on my site. When it does go up, it goes up very slowly.
-
Well.. you know what they say..
“Shop Smart, shop S-Mart”
-
That is true, people do say those words.
I should probably stop shop checking AND stop checking, just to make sure :p
-
Hey Batguy! Have you given-up/admitted-defeat on my NFS:HP challenge yet? 😛
-
Hells no! Just that life and a new laptop have got in the way. Let’s set midnight Sunday as a fair cutoff time?
-
Yep, midnight Sunday sounds good. 😀

Finally! A cure for Angry Birds Addiction!
http://mashable.com/2011/03/17/mike-tyson-angry-birds/
-
lol I was expecting something a bit more harmful to the user, still funny though xD
Is anybody playing Fight Night Champion? Thoughts?
I think a lack of a manual and a decent tutorial/training mode really hurt this game. It’s quite easy to Spam your way nearly all the way through Champion mode and then all of a sudden it gets hard and technical. Not a complaint per say, it’s when the game gets interesting, but i feel it should have been more of a progression/ learning curve. I’ve managed to get the hang of it and am finding the rest of the game quite enjoyable, but i was a big fan of the launch title.
-
I’ve not played enough to really comment – but I miss the controls from FNR4.
-
I’m torn on the controls, but it should be an option at least.
-
Man.. Slow week.. anyone got computer problems? 😉
-
Sadly (for you) I seem to have fixed my M&M connection problems, so JM2 if you’re reading this, I should be good henceforth. It might not have been my network, as I’m now trying it on a third computer, and it seems to run.
-
I know. I was logged in as you and then got a message saying that you were opening another browser and it kicked me. Got the oven started and sold some resos.
-
Whoops, sorry.
Thanks for what you’ve done, I appreciate it.
-
-
-
I have a problem with mine, it’s too old! Can you fix that? Pro bono?
-
what sort of dramas you having sughly?
-
Haha, no drama really, just stuck on a 775 board with ddr2 ram :'(
-
Sounds like me too, 775 socket and I got 667 type RAM 😛 once my very very sturdy P5K-E Asus finally kicks the bucket I’ll be upgrading to a new board, new RAM and very powerful CPU 😛
-
Haha, mine’s an Asus too, also quite sturdy. P5Q Turbo or something or rather…
-
‘Cuz Asus are just the best, hands down. HANDS DOWN! 🙂
-
I’ve had 2 Asus boards in my PC, both died within 1-2 years of ownership…so I got a Gigabyte board 😀
Gigabyte FTW!

-
I’ve been trying to hack the Gibson but the bandwidth on my mainframe is too low. Should I try using a 128mb encryption or should I just plug my iPod into it and hack it using the flash memory?
-
I recommend using a bi-valve flux de-encrypter, via an inverse parameter scan. Using a binary reverse solid-state integrated compressive algorithm, you should be able to achieve the results you desire.
-
I just use a can opener.
old school
-
Ubuntu refuses to recognise my wireless driver. I’ve given up.
Last night I was hanging out at a friend’s house and we ended up watching Ultimate Avengers. It’s an animated movie “based” on The Ultimates.
Aside from the characters being pretty similar to their Ultimate Universe counterparts, there really isn’t that much in common. The animation was cheap and pretty inconsistent, the story was nowhere near as good as the source material and overall it was just a waste.
Why can’t Marvel do animated series as well as DC? The DCAU is awesome, most of the random animated movies like Batman/Superman: Public Enemies are pretty decent and yet when Marvel does it they end up with cheap crap. This makes me sadface.
-
I started watching some episodes of Young Justice, and it’s surprisingly solid. It’s clearly directed at the teen market, and they’ve definitely girlified it a bit from the old Justice League Animated series, but that one was a bit of a thematic sausage fest, so no real problems.
And I agree, Marvel should take lessons, if DC can make a decent series off this, then surely Marvel should be able to manage something decent for one of their heroes.
-
I only found out that Young Justice had started last night. So I ..err… obtained all of the episodes that have aired to day and am going to watch them over the weekend.
The only thing that I can think of that DC gets wrong with their animated series are the opening titles. Justice League and Justice League Unlimited had awesome music ruined by horrible statue-like CG animation. Batman Beyond was also a little odd and Teen Titans had that horrible J Pop song.
Obvious STAS and BTAS are exceptions to that.
-
Yes, I only found out about young justice a few days ago, so I spent a night watching every episode. It was on youtube, so it was perfectly legal. That’s how it works.
-
-
-
Agreed with the quality of DC over Marvel animation. Paul Dini is taking over for the new Ultimate Spiderman, so fingers crossed.
-
Taking over?
He’s ONE of the many quality writers working on the show!
-
So, ever since we moved the bedroom PS3(which plugged straight into the TV) into the loungeroom(which plugs in through an amp/receiver thingy box) the audio has been screwy. It’s fine for discs but if you want to watch something off the PS3’s HDD or an external hard-drive the audio cuts out every couple of seconds.
I remember this happening with the old PS3 when we first bought the amp but I can’t remember how I fixed it. I just remember that I did fix it and it was something to with PCM because ‘PCM’ appears on the amp and flashes when the sound cuts out.
I’ve tried everything I can think of and changed every audio setting on the PS3 but nothing is working. I tried messing with settings on the amp too, but I don’t think the problem lies there because the old PS3 was fine with those settings.
Has anyone had a similar problem and fixed it, or do any of you have an idea about what’s going on and how to fix it?
-
Is this related (I’m just bored and also guessing):
http://www.eurogamer.net/forum_thread_posts.php?thread_id=81990
-
I’ve seen that touched upon in my research, but as the blu-ray movies and games are fine I’m guessing it’s not really related. It is set to bitstream at the moment, anyway.
I guess I should be thankful it’s not the other way around, with the hard drive sound perfect but the disc sound dodgy. At least I can play games.
-
it’s Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday
Thank you (so much) to the person (you know who you are) who posted a link to this song. i will be singing it over the weekend and well into next week it would now seem to be.
Unfortunately, these are the only words of the song i happen to know and quite possibly the only words to the song. As Marlon Brando said: The horror . . . the horror. Martin Sheen knows the score.
I am sailing on the weekend where my singing will quite possibly get me killed in international waters (where murder is legal, encouraged even). Lucky then i have always wished for a sea burial. Please note: i don’t blame you, old chap; Plainview walks the path of forgiveness & light.
a kind person has provided me with some solace in the form of:
Rebecca Black vs Boyz n the Hood: http://i.imgur.com/Ovel0.jpg
This is to be an important question, regardless of context, i now suspect for the ever gregarious, bubbly/effervescent Miss Black.
And just as a curiosity, didn’t Ice Cube already do the “Friday” song?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA_NdaedMGk
it’s Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday
Apocalypse me,
Plainview.

-
I am sorry, I only passed it on in the hope that seeing others experiencing the pain would lessen what I myself have felt. All I have now though, is blackness. I thank you for your forgiveness, and, to be honest, I shall admit that I would not be so kind. The man who first directed me to that song has been stricken from my family tree, forgotten, left by the wayside. I regret that action too, but what has been done may not be undone. I wish you the best of luck in your sailing Plainview, and please, for the sake of my conscience, if you are in any danger due to the song, fight for all you are worth, as I would have no honourable options left in life, were you to die through my actions.
-
You linked it too?
-
Hai!
When did you post it? I’m kind of hoping that you posted it first, because then I can shift blame to someone else, but then, if you did, I was just a pale imitation, no better than these spammers, trying to get the meaningless honour of starting a new page.
-
I dunno, I only posted it this morning. Because it seemed appropriate. Being Friday and all. Friday friday… gotta.. get up? On Friday.
I heard it yesterday, and have been hearing it ever since.
-
Yeah, I posted it Tuesday or Wednesday, I think, but it has been exceedingly, umm, frequent, I refuse to say popular.
I’m running on the theory that it’s like “The Producers” something so bad that it makes money (although that wasn’t their aim in that film, it was the outcome).
-
IT WAS . . . KEYSER SOZE-!!!!

-
-
MY DEATH MEANS NOTHING! SAVE YOURSELF!! RUN!!!
-
I won’t leave you behind Plainview.
There comes a point in every man’s life when he must decide whether or not he is a real man, and that point is now. I will stand here with you, shoulder to most likely upper arm, because I’m pretty short, my tiny hands clenched, and together we will survive. We will do more than that, in fact, we will live.
“Chaque joueur doit accepter les cartes que la vie lui distribue. Mais une fois qu’il les a en main, lui seul peut décider comment jouer ses cartes pour gagner la partie.”
-
lolol! I too have it stuck quite firmly in my head thanks to the friend that pointed it out to me… I think I mentioned that already. So it’s a cycle that I’m afraid I’m responsible for continuing. Since I’m suffering too, I regret nothing!
That pic is pure gold though. There’s also this Bob Dylan version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FISHEO3gsM
-
Wow, this version makes the song awesome.
-
Bob Dylan makes anything sound awesome 😛
-
That actually sounds really good. But it must be a fake though, right? i feel like i just got Punkd!!!
My Trauma Center piece was posted as a Reader Retrospective, my desk is basically clear and soon enough I’ll be free to go home and continue doing nothing.
I like Fridays, no matter much some songs attempt to ruin it with their awfulness.
-
It was a great piece – you’re a top writer dude. I’m totally going to dig out Trauma Center now. If I EVER FINISH GHOST TRICK AND DEAD SPACE 2 AND ALL THE OTHER GAMES PILING UP!
-
Thanks. It’s amazing how much I improved once I learned to edit my work, even if it does almost double the amount of time it takes to get things down.
Also, play Trauma Center now. Now! It only takes 5-6 hours to go from start to finish. Also, if you get up to the X missions, you’ll probably throw your DS across the room in frustration. Which means that you won’t have to worry about finishing any other DS games for a while, because your DS will be scattered across the room in many pieces.

I was recently introduced to the concept of a Dojo challenger: a fighter who travels to Dojos and challenges the sensei or top fighters to a match.
Pokemon makes so much more sense now!
I never saw the similarities before but if you replace pokemon with martial arts and set it in a romanticised feudal Japan it totally works.
Maybe if the english version left it as Dojo instead of Gym I would have got it sooner.
As far as I could tell the game was a series of legalised muggings.
-
LOl at legal muggings, That does clear up alot of things in the pokemon universe, it always felt like hah i beat you now i take your money bitchz. The other thing that always seemed weird was the fact they where 10 and their mums where fine with them exploring and running into dangerous situations. Bugger that my mum hated me going bike riding at that age and i live in a small town.
Hey Sughly
That suckerpunch movie looks like some grade A shizz!
Will you take me to see it???
-
Haha, is that a date? Are you asking me out?
I don’t know though, what’s his name… Zach Snyder, his trailers always look impressive but the films are always poop. 300, then The Watchmen… the best thing to come out of The Watchmen film was that it finally got me to read the graphic novel. Which probably made the movie even more disappointing.
-
Mind you, his Dawn of the Dead was good…
-
In my opinion, the ending to the watchmen movie was way better. Some people disagree with me, but I think “Doctor Manhattan Explosions” beats “Psychic Alien Invasion Explosion Mindfuck.”
-
I dont know, maybe if the movie was made better? Maybe if the acting was better and the dialogue didnt suck so much?
That being said, this is hilarious – http://www.robandelliot.cycomics.com/archive.php?id=362
-
I’ve always found the best bit about the ending to Watchmen (movie and graphic novel) was
*******SPOILER ALERT*******
(You’ve been warned!)How Manhattan killed Rorschach.
*******END SPOILERS********
Always found that bit to be very poignant.
-
I agree with you! I found the explanation for the explosion in the movie was more satisfying, though I did like the mysterious build-up in the graphic novel.
-
Oh, definitely, the build up was far better in the book. My main problem though, was that it was a graphic novel, with a relatively firm grasp on reality (relatively), and then what they did just seemed silly. Ozymandias has the line saying how he’s not a comic villain, but then his plan could have been dreamed up by Gargamel.
As a side point, opinion on the side story thing, the meta-comic within the comic? I didn’t really enjoy it, I found it just kind of broke my connection with the story, and I’m glad that they kept it out of the main film itself, how do others feel about it?
-
-
Blaghman. Please pack up your things and head over to a mental institution. There is no possible way the movie’s ending was better than the graphic novel. I am disappointed in you.

Saw lots of hype for Suckerpunch when i was in US. Does look mad cool, but the fact Vanessa Hudgens is in it makes me a bit wary….
-
*Grabs his shadow by the collar*
*SLAP*
Get it together man!
*SLAP*
It’s an action film with a cast of hot women!
*SLAP*
Hot!
*SLAP*

*Lets go*There’s no way it can be bad!

-
at the cinema where i work , there are big posters for sucker punch…
lets just say i’m glad i stand behind a stand so no-one can see the lower half of my body…
Eating this amazing triple smoked ham got me thinking – why don’t they make quadruple smoked ham? Are they worried that it would be TOO awesome? I for one would like to try it…
-
I guess there has to be a line, eventually you would have hammed smoke which would probably sell really well but would be terrible in a sandwich.
-
mm triple smoked ham is the best! Tis the only stuff I buy anymore!
MARK SERRELS
This is where I went!
-
To youtube? That place is indeed hard to get out of.
-
And a dark place if you end up in corners like this – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0

Stop linking that damned video! I’d rather have a lobotomy.

POKEY-MENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-
Poking men. Gotta poke em aaaaalll!!

OK guys, we have 2 or so hours left to break 1000 posts again!
FIRE AWAY! 😀
-
So ummmm…..
You come here often?
-
I’ve got another hour before I can leave work with nothing to do but answer phones. So I guess I could help you in your quest to spam this place up, as they say. But I’m playing Pokemon White right now.
Just beat the second gym leader.
I went to make me some cheese muffins for lunch, only to find I had no eggs.
Then I remembered reading somewhere you can replace eggs with egg-based mayo in an emergency so I figured I’d try it.
It works!
If anyone else ever tries this though, don’t eat the mixture before you cook it…yuck.
-
I once started making chocolate chip cookies, made the dough and was about to add the choc chips when I found out I had no more choc chips. I was sad. I had to put some healthy stuff in, like nuts and fruit pieces. It was terrible.
-
*grips chest in pain*
Hngh… my arteries… they’re… getting unclogged!
All those years…. *breathes heavily* of delicious foods… being flushed… out of my veins…!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
-
So jealous of the cheese muffins! Bringing back memories of my mums cheese scones she’d serve at tupperware parties and stuff! Damn good! DO WANT!
Well, there we have it ladies and gentlemens. Another week done and dusted. I just had some chocolate cake.
-
Well that definitely makes it official in my books.
-
Haven’t had chocolate cake for AGES.
So jelly.

Not feeling well?
Me too!
Only I’m more of a
“COUGH, HACK, SPLUTTER…hooorrrrrrrwk!!!”
so i’m a big fan of anamanaguchi, so i’m like “i’m gonna learn how to chiptune!”
so far i have been messing aroun with LSDJ (look it up kids) and it’s god damn hard…
but i’m super passionate about it so i’m gonna learn!
anyway, just thought i’d ask, any of you guys musical types? what instruments do you play?
i play a bit of keyboard and synth, guitar, and i’m quite a good singer if i say so myself 😀
-
I know Q-bo is an absolute freak when it comes to music. That’s a compliment, just to clarify.
Personally, I can sing surprisingly well, when I’m not failing hard (like in the single recorded instance of me singing… *cough*), I can play piano quite well, given how small my hands are (my reach is only about a ninth), but my main hurdle there is reading sheet music, which I suck at, and I used to play violin, though that was long long ago.
-
I play Piano/Keyboard, and drums, I can also sing…I think…
I just finished the Bulletstorm campaign mode!!
I picked easy but still died multiple times throughout. It’s a pretty good game (reminds me of those plain ol’ shooting games at the arcade).
SpamTod!!! The Kotaku AU Facebook Page needs you!! They are trying to get to 2000 likes! You MUST do your duty an help them out! 😛
Page 7, Here I Come!!!!
Now BOW to your new Page 7 dictator! My first order, you must get to 1000 posts!
-
All hail King SPAMBOMAN007!
-
On a saturday! That’s like another 160 comments, i’m sure Elly has much more important things to do….. 😉
-
Yes sir!
Ad for Sucker Punch in the top right. Definitely looking forward to that one.
Just wondering if anyone what the MAG community is like these days?
-
I’m wondering the same thing.
Came across this gem the other day. Think of any character from any media ever (real life or not) and this thing will guess it.
It’s scarily accurate 😛
-
This site whilst scarily accurate, is also scarily filled with viruses….. Made my anti-virus go craaaaaazy.
The devilishly handsome Serrelsesque Scottish accent was what attracted me to this video, but it’s actually a really interesting overview of all the versions of Internet Explorer (shudder):
