To Upgrade Its Social And Video Features

In preparation for the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update, Microsoft has announced that they'll be updating the website over the coming days to implement some of the dashboard's new features before it launches on consoles later this summer.

Users will be able to search the Zune store online and buy and rent movies from their browser, and the social features (one of the ways that is vastly superior to Sony's PlayStation Network website) are becoming much more robust.

The best new feature is the game "beacons" that will soon be available to all Xbox 360 users. When a player wants to find friends to play with online, it's not a matter of dropping a digital beacon that everyone can see suggesting a time and a place to play. You'll be able to go to separate pages for any of your games, and see which of your friends have set becons for those.

As new features go, I think Beacons sound really cool -- it's always been difficult to pick times and dates to meet up with friends online, and I anticipate using that feature quite a bit. We'll see how they work once the update is live.

The beacon idea is good. I thought of something like that, usually with lobbies though (lol PC features). Mainly to help with games that do not have a local only search function.

It's also good for older games that some people forget about, usually because they couldn't find any players. Would be good to find other people who want to play Aliens Versus Predator or something like that.

So can we go to a list of beacons and check which ones we want to play, or do we need to go through each game?

lol, I think I read a suggestion on the Playstation Blog Share page for a feature like this.
That was quite a while ago - not much off that list has been implemented. By Sony at least.

I just want to be able to turn off all of M$'s marketing crap. I will be a happy man only then.

So let me get this straight, Beacons are sort of like Steam Events, right?

Question: am I the only one who simply can't use the Xbox website? With Firefox, I can browse until I try to log in, when it basically errors out. With IE, it doesn't load AT ALL. It's been doing this for months now...

Beacons are the big innovation that I'm looking forward to, I've always wanted to find friends to invite to matches (esp when player numbers were low) but you have to go through and compare acheivements just to see if they've got the same game and it might just be something they've rented, it'd be great to just be able to see what games people are up for online.
