Minimum And Recommended Specs For Mass Effect 3 Released

Mass Effect 3. The belle of the ball. The big kahoona burger. The granddaddy of them all. The big papa bear. The main event... alright I'll stop now. Mass Effect 3's release date is rapidly approaching and Bioware has seen fit to release both the minimum requirements and the recommended requirements for the PC version of the game.

My minimum requirements are 'Xbox 360', because I'll be playing it on console like an idiot, but the PC master race will need this kind of horse power at least...

Minimum Spec:

OS - Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1, Win 7 *Supported chipsets: NVIDIA 7900 or better; ATI X1800 or better. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 9300, 8500, 8400, and 8300 are below minimum system requirements, as are AMD/ATI Radeon HD3200, HD3300, and HD4350. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required.

CPU - 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (equivalent AMD CPU)

RAM - 1GB for XP / 2GB RAM for Vista/Win 7

Disc Drive - 1x speed

Hard Drive - 15 GB of free space

Video - 256 MB* (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support)

Sound - DirectX 9.0c compatible

DirectX - DirectX 9.0c August 2009 (included)

But if they want to live up to the master race name, they'll be needing this...

Recommended Spec:

OS - Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1, Win 7

CPU - 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (equivalent AMD CPU)

RAM - 2GB for XP / 4GB RAM for Vista/Win 7

Disc Drive - 1x speed

Hard Drive - 15 GB of free space

Video - AMD/ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB or greater, NVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512 MB or greater

Sound - DirectX 9.0c compatible

Yeah, I think it's about time for me to update my desktop.

I can be part of the master race with A Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM and a 9800GT? Is it just me or are those recommended specs really quite low? I mean that hardware on the recommended list is approaching 5 years old now. *smells dodgy console port incoming*

They've done admirably with ME1 and 2 so far with the PC version. No reason to think it won't be alright again... right?

No, Bioware's just REALLY good with system specs. Blizzard does this too.

Same with Valve, I prefer games with low specs, because it means I can max everything out and play the game smoothly. No need to have super graphics for a good game.

Provided there are a few bells and whistles (post processing and nice lighting) im ok with lower then average recommended.

You know, normally I love taxing my rig. However, I am really happy with what they've done with Mass Effect. They have all been quite good looking whist never breaking a sweat.

I'm happy that more people can enjoy these games than just us elite, awesome gaming machine owning demigods.

Yep, thats the recommended spec's of an Unreal Engine 3 game alright. I don't think I even own a PC with specs lower than those recommended ones.

"My minimum requirements are ‘Xbox 360′"

    YOU STOLE MY JOKE!
i was going to say that until i read the article properly
    LOL

Yeah thats exactly what I was thinking. Console port definitely. But with their decision of Origion only as well, they're making my decision very very easy.

Looks like I'll get at least another year out of my 2007 PC, which makes me happy. I spent way too much on that thing back in the day.

"4 cores? Woo! Sign me up!"

That's not that bad. I could run this on my 3 year old PC. Maybe not well, but it'd run. I seem to have enough ram for msot things, maybe it's worth putting a couple of hundred bucks into a better graphics card.

Mark, you're not an idiot for playing it on the 360. It's where I'll be playing it even though my desktop exceeds those requirements. It's due to the DLC for ME2 and all my saves that I've created.

The entire series has always been a port to the PC, it's just a matter of how well done the port is, eg. compare ME1 to ME2 on PC. I'll be happy this time around if they did proper key bindings this time around just like ME1 for things like "Quest Log", "Inventory", "Squad". Either way I'm probably still going to love the damn thing.

Really?! Surely they're having us on. That recommended spec rig is something I owned 5+ years ago.

Even my 4 year old laptop would kill this. I smell something awry...

Well, it's being chiefly designed for hardware that is 7 years old now.

Ah, true. Nothing says console-port other than dated recommended specs.

Remember that what a developer considers minimum and recommended is different from a player's. Minimum means the game will technically run. Recommended means it will run at 30 frames per second and up. To me, recommended is the game running at 60 frames.

And generally their opinion is at 720p or lower like the consoles

Um 4850 and 9800 GT..... Both as old as the hills, my pc will smash this up the shizzer!

Dammit - my disc drive doesn't meet specs - damn you hardware wars!

Looks like your pretty stock standard specs you see for anything these days.

I'm very disappointed to see Kotaku hasn't joined the SOPA protest today.

There's TONNES of Kotaku stories - about game culture where people do creative things with copyrighted characters - that could simply disappear in the future because GAME COMPANY X makes that site disappear.

A freeware tribute game, using Sonic sprites? DOMAIN SEIZED.
An Etsy maker, knitting Mario hats? GONE. PAYPAL ACCOUNT SEIZED.
    That sorta thing.

If you think it doesn't matter "as it's only in America", then try using the internet WITHOUT visiting any US-hosted sites for a day.

Anyway, John Walker writes about this more eloquently than I...

Sorry, i'm already protesting John Walker today after his stupid Valve article yesterday. I can only handle one protest a day, try again tomorrow.

Yes, disagreement about an earlier post by a particular author definitely justifies ignoring an important issue that is likely to destroy many online elements of game culture.

From what I've seen over the last 24 hours, SOPA is falling apart.

Kotaku US posted a story today (unsure why its not on AUS)
      http://kotaku.com/5877153/why-were-not-protesting-sopa-today

      Personally have a cry.

Considering that most of the petition's Etc don't allow non US address's because we are by and large irrelevant.

coupled with the fact that Kotaku AU probably doesn't have that high of a readership that it's going to make itself as well known outside Aus/NZ

      -----

KotakUS didn't skip out on it. And as for Tolito's Article my view is BS, they earn money based on views being one of the sites that is still available will net them some nice cash

Because what, exactly, are we here in Australia supposed to do about it? It's a decision made by Americans in America, we have no say in it whatsoever.

So why would they have a requirement that your disc drive can successfully spin? Madness!

Yeah, I think you can blow hard enough to spin the disk at 1x speed.

If you can't.... give it to your mother.

      MUAHAHAH

Hrmm.. these specs are lower than Skyrims?

Yes very very low specs. Looks about on par with ME2.

I'm almost disappointed that my current computer can play it. Kind of expecting much higher recommended requirements, and the fact that it's apparently happy with a 2.4Ghz dual core and only a 9800 backing that up for maximum graphics...worries me a little.

I feel for anyone who would run this on Min specs :/

IM still debating is i would console this game of PC this game...

Does anyone know if this was built for a PC or console then ported to which?

Pretty much every game is now built primarily for the console, then ported to PC. It is possible to do a good job of such porting (SR3, ME1&2), but it will be built for consoles. This is why the required PC specs are so low. Buy it on the platform where you have your previous ME game files. If you do not have ME save games, then it's probably time to play ME1 & ME2 :)

Stop with the acting suprised people haha, its Unreal Engine 3, it runs well, Mass Effect 1 and 2 were also pretty light on the system specifications, pretty much anybody will be able to play this game on pc

I'm surprised they even bothered releasing these specs. Anyone with a computer from the last few years should be able to run it comfortably given that this is a console game first and PC game second.

Your mind also has a tolerance requirement requiring you to tolerate bland, generic spandexed spacemen & characters with eyes that look like Thunderbird murder puppets!

1x Disc drive aye? Why kind of disc would that be? CD-ROM? Ooooh, Maybe I can get out my 2x CD-ROM drive. That would be fun to install a 10 GB game from.......

Marketing ppl mibs soecs revealed shame on you for hyping PC when you jniw the last game wouldnt run full detail well on those specs even with all the console level design and direction factored in. Please get back to us with the real gamers recommended specs when your done feeding the trolls

    Minimum specs: Xbox
    Recommended specs: Xbox
    That is all.
