Minecraft's Made Almost As Much As Angry Birds

It hasn't been downloaded nearly as much, but the $US80 million in revenues that Minecraft has delivered to Mojang compares well to the $US100 million its Scandinavian neighbours Rovio have pulled in from Angry Birds. And that figure looks to get larger once the game arrives on Xbox Live Arcade in May.

The revenue figure comes since Minecraft launched in October 2010, going by filings Mojang made in Sweden. Its earnings over that span amounted to $US13.5 million.

That's according to a profile written up in the Financial Times, which also revealed Mojang has made roughly $US1 million from licensing Minecraft to other products, like T-shirts and toys. Mojang's chief executive told the Financial Times they've turned down more offers than they've accepted.

"We've been approached by a number of high-profile Hollywood producers and asked to do TV shows," Mr Manneh says. "We may do that. It's hard when you don't have any experience and someone comes to throw these ideas around. We have so much to focus on with just the game development and growing the business. But if the right idea comes along and the right people that we'd want to work with, we'd say why not?"

    So lets compare though...

MC is what, 10 bucks per pop, AB is 1 dollar per pop. Theyre not even taking into account the pre-orderers like myself who bought 4 copies of the game for everyone in their household to support an indie project (it was well worth it, its still played almost 2 years later almost every day by at least SOMEONE here)

Angry birds is ok, its a good time waster but it'll never be the game with the potential that MC is.

You could equally say that "Minecraft is ok, its a good time waster, but it'll never be the game with the potential AB has'. You can't compare the two games themselves, only the amount of money they have generated - which is the point of this article

Not really, MC inspires a whole modding community, inspires intellectual thought and genius contraptions in some case. Angry Birds, hell I own them all, but you can't compare the levels of innovation coming from the community. One has all sorts, the other has nil.

Try about $22 a pop back when I bought it (in Beta) not sure how much it is now! The XBLA version works out to about $26.70 AUD

Damn????? Still, much better value for money ;)

it was 10 bucks back when it was in alpha. plus u get all updates for free. anyone who bought it in beta stage or later is a weak idiot cashing in on a popular trend.

I was playing Minecraft back when it was cool.

        *fringe flick*

Do not understand how a T.V show would have worked... Interested to see though...

Have you heard of a website called YouTube? Half the stuff on there is minecraft related, quite a bit is narrative based. Shadow Of Israphel and such.

Merchandising. The Angry birds live in their nest village, use their catapult to travel the land or some crap, occasionally the evil pigs annoy them and try to steal their young or something..

Wait thats too indepth for cartoons these days.

TEH EVIL PIGZ KIK DA BIRDZ IN DA NUTZ!

      There, fixed.
