Today, Nintendo officially announced that Super Smash Bros. is coming to Switch. Equally exciting: the original Luigi’s Mansion is getting a 3DS remake!
It was a port-heavy Direct this time around, with some cool news tucked in around the edges. Here’s everything Nintendo showed.
Super Smash Bros. is coming to Switch.
Not the most surprising announcement, given how perfect the Switch seems like it’d be for portable Smash tournaments, but it’s still cool to have it confirmed. The teaser in the Direct showed the squid kids from Splatoon stumbling upon the rest of the Smash cast, so it will be interesting to see how they stack up. Super Smash Bros. will hit Switch in 2018. Maybe this will finally be my moment to get into Smash.
Dillon’s Dead-Heat Breakers Is Coming to 3DS
Dead-Heat Breakers will be another game in the Dillon series, and this one lets you bring in your own character to play alongside Dillon. If you (like me!) really liked Dillon’s Rolling Western, you’re probably stoked about this. There’ll be a demo on the eShop on May 10th, and the full game is out on May 24th.
The original Luigi’s Mansion is getting remade for 3DS.
I love the 3DS sequel, and have actually never played the GameCube original. It will be out in 2018. Maybe it will be time to dust off the 3DS for this…
LMAO Dark Souls Amiibo.
According to Nintendo, this Amiibo will let you “perform the popular ‘praise the sun’ gesture with reckless abandon.” I only own one Amiibo but… this might be my second. Dark Souls Remastered hits Switch on May 25.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is coming to Switch.
I heard nothing but good things about this game, but didn’t play it when it was on Wii U. It will get some new levels based on Super Mario Odyssey, and looks extremely cute. The port will be out on July 13, and is also coming to 3DS.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole is also coming to Switch.
I only played a bit of this on PC, and it was immediately apparent that it’d be much better to play on the go. It’s coming pretty soon, on April 24.
Splatoon 2 is getting a bunch of new stuff.
Nintendo showed off a teaser for the new “Octo Expansion” for Splatoon 2, which will be the first paid DLC for the game. It’s a single-player mode that casts you as an octoling named Agent 8 who has to make her way through 80 test facilities connected by a subway. Once you finish, you’ll get to play in multiplayer as an octoling.
Nintendo also announced that because it also contains the number 8, 2018 is “The Year of the Octoling.” The Octo Expansion will cost $US20 ($26) and will be out this summer. Splatoon 2 is also getting a 3.0 update in late April, which will introduce a bunch of new outfits, some new stages, and a new “X” rank.
A few other things:
- WarioWare Gold, featuring 300 microgames, hits 3DS on August 3.
- Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story is being remade for 3DS along with Bowser Jr.’s Story, both for 2019.
- The 3DS is getting a remake of the original Luigi’s Mansion.
- Okami HD is coming to Switch this summer.
- Jason’s most anticipated Switch game Octopath Traveller is out on July 13.
- Undertale is coming to Switch with a release date of “eventually.”
- No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again got some new gameplay footage.
- A port of Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy comes to Switch on July 10.
- The goofy sushi battle game Sushi Striker: Way of the Sushido is now also coming to Switch.
- Little Nightmares will be out on Switch on May 18.
- Hyrule Warriors comes to Switch on May 18.
And that’s all she wrote. I’m a little bummed there was no Metroid Prime Trilogy Switch port announcement, but I can’t wait to check out that Splatoon DLC.

The Switch is utterly unstoppable at this point. This thing is going to hit PS2 numbers, no question.
Someone needs to get on it and zoom and enhance that Smash trailer and figure out who all the silhouettes are. I could only see Bowser and Samus.
I’m late with video game news this week. Did Geralt get confirmed for something yet?
So Crash coming to the Switch is huge!!!
And Maria tennis looks awesome!!!
Nowhere has Nintendo said the Smash Bros game is a new game, it could still just be a port of the old WiiU one with some added characters. Everyone’s reporting it as a ‘new’ game but Nintendo’s own messaging is ambiguous at this point.
Does it honestly matter? It’s SSB on Switch. I never got the WiiU version, so I’m more than happy to get a remastered version.
Is there a difference if it is a new SSB or remake? Gameplay has 0 changes, with Splatoon confirmed added it will most likely you get inkling and splatoon stage.
actually says new game in the branding.
One thing I’ve learnt with Nintendo Directs is to never expect anything. These things are great at giving out more information on stuff you already know about and surprise announcements you never see coming.
That being said, if they were going to announce a WiiU port, I wish it would have been Tokyo Mirage Sessions F#. That would be a great way to fill in time before SMT V.
Mario Tennis had me on the fence in the last trailer, but the new details about how the game plays has me at a Day 1 digital purchase. Looks so much fun and I love the risk / reward of the energy gauge. Gonna be a great game to just have a few matches of on the couch, plus Waluigi looks stunning.
Coming to the switch:
Remake
Remake
Old game
Remake
HD remake
Old game
Old game
Game from 2 years ago
etc…
True, you aren’t likely to see your RDR2s or your BOIIIIs on there, but hopefully Sony’s looking on with interest and seeing that the handheld market is still alive and kicking. The prospect of a PS5 hybrid is tantalising.
Don’t you dare play with my emotions like that … don’t you dare!
Agree totally!
When will they drop a motion control Mario Party game?!?!
They already did – Mario Party 8 on the Wii.
Splatoon DLC wooooo cant wait.
Loving the opportunity to play old games I didn’t get a chance to finish – Okami HD and the Luigi’s Mansion remake in the Dark Moon engine are going to fit so well with the portable model. And Smash, ohhhh smash; new or port, doesn’t matter to me.
Oh my god I was so hyped to watch the Nintendo Direct and that so many games are coming to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS later this year and the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy coming to the Nintendo Switch on July 10th thank you so much for answering my comments ACTIVISION. I can’t wait to go back and relive my memories of playing Crash Bandicoot as a child when Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy arrives on the Nintendo Switch on July 10th. I hope you do the same for the Spyro the Dragon Trilogy ACTIVISION. Never played Undertale but I am wanting to try out Undertale when it comes out for Nintendo Switch later this year. Mario Tennis Aces coming out on June 22 count me in CAMELOT. I’m ready for any Mario Tennis action and I can’t believe the game is also going to include the Chain Chomp. Nintendo and CAMELOT you guys are really making me very happy. UBISOFT’S South Park: The Fractured But Whole coming to Nintendo Switch. Nah the game is too offensive even though South Park is an R18+ rated game. I am excited though for Super Smash Bros coming out later this year along with the Wii U version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker making a comeback on Nintendo Switch and that it’s going to include New Donk City when it comes to Nintendo Switch on July 13. Luigi’s Mansion the 2002 Gamecube version coming to Nintendo 3DS later this year. Yes please. Don’t know much about BANDAI NAMCO’S Little Nightmares Complete Edition but since it’s coming to Nintendo Switch on May 18 I hope it’s not too spooky for me Koei Tecmo Europe’s Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition finally coming out on May 18 very proud for you Koei Tecmo Europe.
WARIOWARE GOLD coming to Nintendo 3DS very exciting time for me to become a WARIOWARE fan.
Nintendo I’m so proud that you are finally getting third party support from SQUARE ENIX ACTIVISION and CAPCOM.
I’ve really enjoyed the March 8 edition of Nintendo Direct you keep up the good work Nintendo we’re expecting to reach 20 million Nintendo Switch units by the end of this year.
You guys are awesome.
Nooo, Luigi’s Mansion, why the 3DS and not the Switch!?
Ok, now that I’m thinking about it, other than the cool factor of playing it portable on the switch, the dark souls remastered editions just kind of depress me? Because A it’s a bit of a cash grab and B it just means an actual remake with added content has like zero possibility of releasing in the next 5 years, if ever.
Praise the sun indeed my undead ones
