Avalanche’s Lost Contracts Claim 77 Jobs

3:20AM Mike Fahey | Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios is having to trim their staff by 77 people in the face of two lost publishing contracts over the past year, worth an estimated $US34 million. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Avalanche CEO Christofer Sundberg explains how the layoffs came about. “We lost the first deal in February but we could survive that one because we had a shortage of staff in other projects and we decided to put together a team to work on an original IP that we had in development. But the team that were working on a project that was terminated last week – there were about 67 people on that team.” More »

Avalanche Engine 2.0 Debuts At TGS

8:30AM Mike Fahey | Swedish developer Avalanche Studios powered their free-roaming action title Just Cause with their own Avalanche Engine, and now they’re taking it to the next level with aptly named Avalanche Engine 2.0. The newly completed engine features support for truly huge environments without seams, as well as advanced character rendering systems for animation, facial rendering, and emotional modelling to simulate human behavior. Well it certainly renders some killer rocks. Perhaps they’ll show something a little meatier at the Tokyo Game Show this weekend, where Avalanche 2.0 will make its worldwide debut. More »
