Eve Online Celebrates Anniversary With A Timeline, Seems Like A Wasted Opportunity

10 years on, Eve Online is still going strong, despite its “survival of the fittest” attitude. While it might not appeal to players used to the kinder waters of games such as World of Warcraft, it certainly caters to enough people to make the venture profitable.

As Jim Rossignol of RPS writes, developer CCP Games is celebrating Eve‘s success and 10th anniversary with a series of promotional treats, one of which is a timeline of the title’s in-game events. Currently, it’s presented as a take-over of the official website.

Unfortunately, the timeline only covers the established fiction of the Eve Online universe, which for any other MMO, would be more than adequate. But the allure (and mystery) of CCP’s game, at least for outsiders — and probably a great deal of insiders — is the rich history created by the players themselves. The scandals, the triumphs and everything in-between.

While distilling all these player-driven events into a comprehensible timeline would not be an easy task, I think the end result would have been a far more powerful piece of marketing… as well as a much-appreciated nod to the player base.
